BACKGROUND: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) in Crowe type IV developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is technically demanding due to high dislocation, abnormal femoral morphology, and soft-tissue contractures. Subtrochanteric shortening osteotomy (SSO) is often required to restore the anatomic hip center and prevent excessive lengthening, yet the ideal osteotomy design and fixation remain controversial. The step-cut SSO offers greater rotational stability and bone contact but is technically complex and biomechanically under-evaluated. This report describes a clinical case supplemented by computa

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease, a condition comprising a variety of inherited peripheral neuropathies, is marked by progressive degeneration of motor and sensory nerves. The current review examines the link between CMT and developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), characterized by abnormal hip joint development. Although the frequency of DDH among CMT patients has been under-investigated, the musculoskeletal complications of CMT (including weakness and abnormal gait) may predispose individuals to hip dysplasia. This narrative review compiles data from 11 publications selected from a systema

Background and Objectives: Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is an orthopedic condition in the pediatric population, affecting between 0.1% and 3% of infants. Chile has one of the highest incidences in South America, reaching 1 per 500 live births. Given the potential of adverse consequences of DDH on infant health, preliminary studies are needed to determine its prevalence in the population and assess its association with relevant risk factors. Materials and Methods: The study is single-center, conducted in a Chilean population. The sample size calculation determined the use of 100 pel

Acetabular dysplasia is a leading cause of secondary hip osteoarthritis in Japan and has long been a major indication for joint-preserving surgery. Over the past decades, several unique pelvic osteotomy techniques have been developed in Japan. Representative procedures include Transposition Osteotomy of the Acetabulum, Rotational Acetabular Osteotomy, Eccentric Rotational Acetabular Osteotomy, Curved Periacetabular Osteotomy, and Spherical Periacetabular Osteotomy. Although these procedures share the common objective of improving femoral head coverage and preserving the native hip joint, each

Geroderma osteodysplastica (GO) is a rare autosomal recessive connective tissue disorder caused by pathogenic variants in the GORAB gene, characterized by premature skin ageing, joint laxity, and osteoporosis leading to recurrent fragility fractures. We described two adult Saudi patients with genetically confirmed GO. The first case involved a 34-year-old male with incidental vertebral fractures, congenital hip dislocation, and low bone mineral density (BMD) in the absence of secondary causes. The second case was a 35-year-old female with longstanding skeletal fragility, scoliosis, and prior h

OBJECTIVES: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is the gold standard for treating Crowe IV developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). However, its long-term effects on lower limb alignment, gait biomechanics, and plantar force in these patients remain underexplored, which is discussed in this article.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study that included 43 DDH Crowe IV patients who underwent THA between February 2008 and October 2019 and a control group of 43 matched healthy volunteers. Postoperative functional outcomes and quality of life were assessed using the Harris Hip Score, KOOS, A

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a common congenital musculoskeletal disorder in children, and effective postoperative rehabilitation is important for functional recovery. This randomized study evaluated the application of postoperative targeted training combined with fast-track surgery (FTS) in children with DDH. A total of 80 children with DDH treated between January 2022 and March 2023 were included. All children successfully underwent hip dislocation-related surgery and were randomly divided into two groups. Group A (n = 40) received general nursing combined with routine rehabil

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound is the standard imaging test for infant developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) but is highly operator-dependent, leading to variable image quality and classification. Artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted ultrasound may standardize acquisition and interpretation and support DDH screening beyond specialist centers.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy and feasibility of AI-assisted ultrasound for infant DDH.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a systematic review and diagnostic test-accuracy meta-analysis of studies enrolling infants (≤12 months) undergoing

AIMS: The aim of this study was to clarify the natural history of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), borderline DDH (BDDH), and normal hips, and to determine whether transposition osteotomy of the acetabulum (TOA) alters the long-term joint survival in DDH and BDDH.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 683 hips treated with TOA and 353 contralateral native hips. Hips were classified by the lateral centre-edge angle (LCEA) as DDH (< 20°), BDDH (20° to < 25°), or normal (≥ 25°). The median follow-up was 11 years (IQR 5.8 to 16) for contralateral native hips and 9.6 years (IQR 5.3 to 15)

BACKGROUND: Traditional imaging modalities like X-rays and conventional MRI lack sensitivity to detect early microscopic changes in cartilage damage, making them insufficient for evaluating early degenerative changes. exploring more sensitive imaging techniques to precisely quantify cartilage damage has become a key focus in current OA research. This study aimed to evaluate the degree of femoral head cartilage damage by quantifying the signal intensity of cartilage regions of interest (ROI) using the 5T MRI T2-mapping sequence and correlating it with Mankin pathological scores for cartilage da

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a common orthopedic disorder in infants, and accurately assessing the success of reduction is critical for achieving positive outcomes. While native radiography has traditionally been the standard postoperative imaging modality, its diagnostic limitations have prompted consideration of computed tomography (CT) as an alternative.

INTRODUCTION: The Pavlik harness is the standard first-line treatment for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in infants younger than six months. However, the optimal strategy for discontinuation after successful hip reduction remains debated. This study aimed to compare clinical and radiological outcomes between immediate discontinuation and gradual weaning using the Frejka pillow following successful Pavlik harness treatment.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data from 144 infants (166 hips) with DDH treated with the Pavlik harness between 2012 and 2023. Patients were categorized in

To investigate the impact of gender on the prognosis of children with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) treated with closed reduction and spica cast immobilization (CR-SCI). A retrospective analysis was conducted on 302 DDH children (347 hips) who underwent CR-SCI at our department from 1 January 2003 to 31 December 2015. Among them, 42 cases (50 hips) were male, and 260 cases (297 hips) were female. The acetabular index, center edge angle (CEA), and avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head were measured and evaluated on anteroposterior pelvic radiographs. The Severin classification

BACKGROUND: Congenital hyperextension of the knee joint is a rare malformation with a variety of names, principally genu recurvatum of knee, backward bending of the knee, and dislocation of knee. Abnormal anterior hyperextension position and limitation of flexion of tibiofemoral joint are the classical clinical presentation in an infant at birth. The accurate etiology of the malformation is undetermined. Congenital genu recurvatum (CGR) can occur as an isolated entity or can present in association with other congenital abnormalities like talipes equinovarus, developmental dysplasia of the hip,

BACKGROUND: Though the Pavlik harness is often used to reduce dislocated hips in infants with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), residual acetabular dysplasia may occur following reduction. It is unclear whether patient or treatment-related factors, including Pavlik wear duration, are associated with residual dysplasia. As a result, there is considerable variability in treatment practices using the harness. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the duration of Pavlik wear predicts radiographic success at 2-year follow-up for newborns with successfully reduced hips.
