De Barsy syndrome is an autosomal recessive condition characterized by an progeroid appearance with distinctive facial features and cutis laxa. Ophthalmological, orthopedic, and neurological anomalies are generally also present. This syndrome is rare and the complex therapeutic management, from a surgical but also rehabilitative point of view, has not been recognized. The aim of this paper is to describe a possible rehabilitative protocol, after an orthopedic surgical treatment, in a child with De Barsy Syndrome. A 6-year-old boy was born with a congenital bilateral hip dysplasia associated wi

BACKGROUND: The results of treatment for neglected developmental dysplasia of the hips (DDH) in children remains controversial. We sought to determine the clinical and radiographic result of patients with neglected DDH with special emphasis on the functional outcome as determined by the Pediatric Outcomes Data Collection Instrument (PODCI) and determine which preoperative variables were related to the result. We also sought to determine if the functional results remain the same over time and if there is there a preoperative variable that can predict a poor outcome.
METHODS: This was a retrosp

INTRODUCTION: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) in the setting of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) presents more inherent complexities than routine primary THA for osteoarthritis. These include acetabular bone deficiency, limb length discrepancy (LLD), and abnormal femoral anteversion. Three-dimensional planning and robot-assisted (RA) bone preparation may simplify these complex procedures and make them more reproducible. The purpose of this study was to evaluate radiographic and clinical outcomes in a cohort of patients who had DDH and underwent an RA THA.

We report the long-term results of Bernese periacetabular osteotomy using a dual approach in hip dysplasia. Fifty-three hips (49 patients, mean age 39.9 years: 13-62 years; bilateral hips: four patients) that underwent periacetabular osteotomy using a dual approach (combined Smith-Peterson and Kocher-Langenbeck techniques) between May 1997 and December 2005 were analyzed in this study. The clinical and radiologic outcomes and complications were analyzed and the final survival rates of the operated hips were investigated with survival analysis curves. Forty-nine hips survived until the final fo

Introduction Avascular necrosis occurs due to impaired blood supply to the bone. It can be caused by fractures, dislocations, chronic steroid use, chronic alcohol use, coagulopathy, congenital source, and many other factors. It mostly affects the femoral head (hip joint). Its management can be conservative or invasive. Total hip arthroplasty is the treatment of choice for third and fourth stage avascular necrosis that can be cemented or uncemented. The purpose of this study is to access the functional outcomes of cementless total hip arthroplasty in patients with avascular necrosis of the hip.

Arthrochalasia Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (aEDS) is a rare autosomal dominant connective tissue disorder that is characterized by congenital bilateral hip dislocations, severe generalized joint hypermobility, recurrent joint (sub)luxations, and skin hyperextensibility. To date, 42 patients with aEDS have been published. We report 12 patients with aEDS from 10 families with 6 unpublished individuals and follow-up data on 6 adult patients. The clinical features are largely comparable with patients reported in the literature. Most (n = 10) patients had variants leading to (partial) loss of exon 6 of

Background: Arthrochalasia type Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a connective tissue disease characterized by severe generalized joint hypermobility, congenital bilateral hip dislocations, and recurrent joint subluxations and dislocations. Only one study has reported bone fragility resulting in fractures. The genetic abnormality underlying this disorder is a variant in the COL1A1 gene causing entire or partial loss of exon 6, resulting in defective type 1 collagen synthesis. Case Report: We report a female infant born at 35 weeks of gestation presenting with pathologic skull fracture following

Previously we reported the identification of a homozygous COL27A1 (c.2089G>C; p.Gly697Arg) missense variant and proposed it as a founder allele in Puerto Rico segregating with Steel syndrome (STLS, MIM #615155); a rare osteochondrodysplasia characterized by short stature, congenital bilateral hip dysplasia, carpal coalitions, and scoliosis. We now report segregation of this variant in five probands from the initial clinical report defining the syndrome and an additional family of Puerto Rican descent with multiple affected adult individuals. We modeled the orthologous variant in murine Col27a1

BACKGROUND: The treatment protocol for children with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is routinely adjusted by assessing the hip reduction after 3 weeks of Pavlik harness treatment. However, there is a high risk of failure and complications in the treatment adjustment. The aim of this study was to explore the value of ultrasound features in predicting the treatment outcome of Pavlik harness after 3 weeks in DDH children.
METHODS: A total of 215 DDH children were recruited and the demographics and the changes of ultrasound features [α and β angle and femoral head coverage (FHC)] during

BACKGROUND: The developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) can cause a wide range of pathological changes, and often requires surgical treatment. Preoperative evaluation is very important for DDH. We aimed to assess the diagnostic capability of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for irreducible aspects preventing hip reduction in DDH.
METHODS: A total of 39 pediatric patients who received DDH evaluation in pediatric orthopedics from January 2015 to December 2019 were included. The samples included 4 cases of bilateral DDH and 35 cases of unilateral DDH, a total of 43 hip joint samples. All patien

OBJECTIVE: Growth hormone deficiency (GHD) is usually treated with recombinant human GH (rhGH), and this has been rarely associated with hip disorders. We analysed the clinical data of patients with congenital GHD receiving rhGH who had associated hip dysplasia or Legg-Calve-Perthes disease (LCPD), with a view to determining whether the hip dysplasia was associated with the underlying disease or with rhGH treatment.
DESIGN: We performed a retrospective analysis of paediatric and adolescent patients seen between 1992-2018 with congenital GHD and hip disorders. Data were collected through a rev

Coronal hip contracture induces pelvic obliquity in the presence of hip osteoarthritis (HOA), followed by the functional leg-length discrepancy. To promote accurate diagnosis of contracture and proper management of soft tissue release in total hip arthroplasty (THA), this study aimed to clarify the morphological features on plain radiographs that are related to contracture in patients with HOA. Two hundred forty-three hips of 231 patients with HOA who underwent primary THA were included in this study. Preoperative pelvic radiographs of the bilateral hips in maximum adduction and abduction were

BACKGROUND: Despite widespread use of single-stage open reduction and pelvic osteotomy for treatment of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) after walking age, this aggressive strategy remains controversial. We directly compared dislocated hips treated with closed reduction (CR) to those treated with open reduction and Salter innominate osteotomy (OR/IO) to estimate the relative hazard of total hip arthroplasty (THA) and the THA-free survival time.
METHODS: In a series of patients 18 to 60 months of age, 45 patients (58 hips) underwent CR and 58 patients (78 hips) were treated with OR/IO
