Late presentation of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) remains a major orthopedic problem. However, existing management is not standardized and is highly surgeon dependent. The theory behind femoro-acetabular zones (FAZ) system is to find a relationship between acetabular maturity and severity of dislocation in one hand, and the outcome of closed reduction, on the other hand in late presenting cases. A retrospective study was performed on children with untreated DDH that underwent closed treatment. Our series consisted of 65 hips; mean patient age was 24 months (range: 9-30 months) with

INTRODUCTION: Achieving adequate acetabular correction in multiple planes is essential to the success of periacetabular osteotomy (PAO). Three-dimensional (3D) modeling and printing has the potential to improve preoperative planning by accurately guiding intraoperative correction. The authors therefore asked the following questions: (1) For a patient undergoing a PAO, does use of 3D modeling with intraoperative 3D-printed models create a reproducible surgical plan to obtain predetermined parameters of correction including lateral center edge angle (LCEA), anterior center edge angle (ACEA), Ton

BACKGROUND: Following successful treatment of developmental hip dysplasia with a Pavlik harness, controversy exists over the benefit of continued harness use for an additional "weaning" period beyond ultrasonographic normalization versus simply terminating treatment. Although practitioners are often dogmatic in their beliefs, there is little literature to support the superiority of 1 protocol over the other. The purpose of this study was to compare the radiographic outcomes of 2 cohorts of infants with developmental hip dysplasia treated with Pavlik harness, 1 with a weaning protocol and 1 wit

BACKGROUND: Adult developmental dysplasia of the hip is an untreated congenital hip dysplasia that results in adult hip pain. One of the usual and effective methods for the treatment of this condition is periacetabular osteotomy. However, which approach is better between the modified S-P and the I-I approaches is still unclear and controversial.
METHOD AND MATERIALS: We retrospectively assessed our experience with the modified S-P and the I-I approaches by inquiring and evaluating intraoperative blood loss, postoperative radiographic material, postoperative function of the hip, and related co

AIMS: Early diagnosis of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) using ultrasound (US) is safe, effective and inexpensive, but requires high-quality scans. The effect of scan quality on diagnostic accuracy is not well understood, especially as artificial intelligence (AI) begins to automate such diagnosis. In this paper, we developed a 10-point scoring system for reporting DDH US scan quality, evaluated its inter-rater agreement and examined its effect on automated assessment by an AI system-MEDO-Hip.
METHODS: Scoring was based on iliac wing straightness and angulation; visibility of labrum,

CASE: A patient with Aitken type A proximal focal femoral deficiency (PFFD) and significant limb length discrepancy managed with total hip arthroplasty making use of a novel technique that features a direct anterior approach (DAA) and a subtrochanteric shortening osteotomy.
CONCLUSION: Although the current description of the shortening osteotomy is for PFFD, it is versatile enough to allow its application in other hip pathologies requiring subtrochanteric shortening in the setting of total hip arthroplasty. The authors believe that the description of this case report and surgical technique ma

BACKGROUND: Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is the most common disorder found in newborns. The consequences of DDH can be mitigated with early diagnosis and nonoperative treatment, but existing approaches do not address the current training deficit in making an early diagnosis.
QUESTION/PURPOSE: Can ultrasound be taught to and used reliably by different providers to identify DDH in neonates?
METHODS: This was a prospective observational study of a series of neonates referred for an evaluation of their hips. An experienced clinician trained three second examiners (a pediatric orthopa

INTRODUCTION: The success of Pavlik harness therapy is based, among other things, upon the correct reapplication by parents. This prospective study assesses the effectiveness of a validated Objective Structured Assessment of Technical Skill (OSATS) educational module for Pavlik harness application among Greek parents.
METHODS: Forty consecutive parents of newborns with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), who were treated with Pavlik harness, were divided into two groups. Twenty parents (group 1) were educated with the Greek OSATS version, while the rest (group 2) served as the control.

BACKGROUND: The clinical finding of asymmetric skinfolds (ASF) in infants is used to indicate the possibility of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). The association of ASF and a diagnosis of DDH remains unknown.
PURPOSE: To determine the association of ASF in the gluteal and femoral regions with a diagnosis of DDH.
METHODS: The correlation of ASF and other physical examination findings with DDH was compared retrospectively. The medical records of infants who underwent DDH screening in the clinic were analyzed. The physical examination findings were reviewed and categorized as ASF, clun

Goyal-Naqvi syndrome (GNS) is a newly documented clinical entity that comprises trisomy 10p and terminal 14q deletion, though trisomy 10p and terminal 14q deletion have been discovered as distinct conditions in 1974 and 1997, respectively. Nevertheless, to date, the total number of reported cases of each of these conditions is estimated to be in double digits. Both manifest as a constellation of features like craniofacial dysmorphism, hypotonia, intellectual impairment and global developmental delay. Characteristic facies include protruded forehead, hypertelorism, epicanthic folds, down slanti

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a severe congenital anomaly that is often accompanied by other anomalies. Although the role of genetics in the pathogenesis of CDH has been established, only a small number of disease-associated genes have been identified. To further investigate the genetics of CDH, we analyzed de novo coding variants in 827 proband-parent trios and confirmed an overall significant enrichment of damaging de novo variants, especially in constrained genes. We identified LONP1 (lon peptidase 1, mitochondrial) and ALYREF (Aly/REF export factor) as candidate CDH-associated g

BACKGROUND: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a complex procedure due to associated anatomical abnormalities. We studied the extent to which preoperative digital templating is reliable when performing cementless THA in patients with DDH.
METHODS: We templated and compared the pre- and postoperative sizes of the acetabular and femoral components and the center of rotation (COR), and analysed the postoperative cup coverage, leg length discrepancy (LLD), and stem alignment in 50 patients (56 hips) with DDH treated with THA.
RESULTS: The implant size ex

BACKGROUND: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) performed for developmental dysplasia of the hip is a technically difficult procedure with a high complication rate, especially in the presence of completely dislocated hips. This study aimed to evaluate at least 10 years of follow-up results of cementless, ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC) THA performed with transverse subtrochanteric osteotomy in Crowe type IV hips.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 50 patients' 67 hips that underwent CoC, cementless THA with transverse subtrochanteric osteotomy between 2008 and 2011. Clinical and radiological data of the
