BACKGROUND: Achilles tenotomy is an integral component of the Ponseti method for treating congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV). Although traditionally performed using a scalpel in a sterile setting, percutaneous needle tenotomy has emerged as a minimally invasive alternative. However, comparative evaluations of these techniques using clinical and ultrasonographic parameters remain limited.
METHODS: This retrospective, dual-center study included 145 feet from 95 pediatric patients treated with the Ponseti method between 2022 and 2024. Seventy-two feet underwent percutaneous needle tenotomy, w

OBJECTIVE: Malnutrition is a very critical health problem, especially among developing countries. It is considered one of the major risk factors for diseases and mortality in children. Clubfoot or congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) is the most common form of congenital orthopedic abnormality, and the Ponseti method has become the gold standard of treatment for clubfoot over the last two decades. This research study aimed at identifying the malnutrition prevalence in clubfoot patients and its relation with the Ponseti technique's outcome for the patients coming to the Orthopedic Clinic of a

INTRODUCTION: Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), or clubfoot, is a common congenital deformity treated effectively using the Ponseti method. However, conventional cast removal techniques, such as oscillating saws or water soaking, can be uncomfortable, time-consuming, and impractical in resource-limited settings. This study evaluated a novel modification involving the interposition of a sterile polythene sheet between layers of plaster of Paris to facilitate easier, safer, and faster cast removal.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective observational study conducted from December 2024

BACKGROUND: Noncompliance with bracing and its protocol is the most common cause of clubfoot deformity relapse after correction. The literature does not clarify when patient noncompliance with the brace occurs-during which period of the bracing phase, or in which age group. This study aimed to determine when noncompliance is most likely to occur.
METHODS: This descriptive observational study included children with idiopathic talipes equinovarus deformity for whom the foot abduction brace was applied to their feet after complete correction via the Ponseti method. Each patient was observed unti

BACKGROUND: Outreach, as a component of health service delivery in South Africa (SA), increases diagnostic and treatment capacity for populations living in remote areas. It further allows for close population surveillance of specific health-related conditions. Paediatric orthopaedic outreach for central SA provides a unique opportunity to provide insight into the incidence rates of common paediatric orthopaedic-related conditions.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the absolute numbers and incidence rates of orthopaedic-related pathological conditions in the paediatric population presenting at outreac

BACKGROUND: Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), or clubfoot, is one of the most common foot deformities seen at birth. The Ponseti technique is the most common method to treat clubfoot and consists of gentle manipulation with serial casting, a percutaneous Achilles tendon tenotomy, and bracing for the first few years of life. The purpose of this study was to determine whether socioeconomic factors influence compliance with clubfoot bracing for families with infants who have idiopathic clubfoot treated by the Ponseti method.
METHODOLOGY: All patients with clubfoot deformity who began primar

Freeman-Sheldon syndrome is a rare form of multiple congenital contracture syndromes (arthrogryposes) and is the most severe form of distal arthrogryposis. The main skeletal malformations include camptodactyly with ulnar deviation and talipes equinovarus while facial characteristics include deep-sunken eyes with hypertelorism, increased philtrum length, small nose and nostrils, and a small mouth. Here we report a rare case of Freeman-Sheldon syndrome (FSS) in an 8-years-old patient giving emphasis on the dental management of FSS.

BACKGROUND: Clubfoot is the most common congenital abnormality of the lower extremity. The widely accepted Ponseti casting method includes a series of manipulations and casts often followed by Achilles tenotomy then use of a foot abduction orthosis. Some evidence suggests initiation of casting within a week of age improves outcomes but access to care and socioeconomic factors can impact timing of casting initiation. This study evaluates differences in clinical outcomes, demographic variables, and Child Opportunity Index (COI) between patients who initiated treatment before and after 4 weeks of

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Valproate has a well-documented teratogenic risk, whereas lamotrigine and levetiracetam seem relatively safe. However, evidence for other antiseizure medications (ASMs) and specific congenital anomalies remains limited and inconsistent. We aimed to assess the risk of overall and specific congenital anomalies associated with prenatal exposure to individual ASMs.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the Korean National Health Insurance Service mother-child linkage database from 2013 to 2021. Pregnant women aged 20-45 years with live births were inc

Non-mosaic trisomy 9 (NMTS9) is a rarely described chromosomal abnormality because most affected pregnancies result in first trimester spontaneous abortions, although survival to delivery is possible. In contrast, the phenotypic features of mosaic trisomy 9 have been well described in the literature as these individuals can survive to birth and beyond. Therefore, a better understanding of the phenotypic spectrum of NMTS9 is needed to provide appropriate perinatal counseling. The phenotype from three fetal and one neonatal case of NMTS9, as defined by chromosome analysis in multiple tissues, is

INTRODUCTION: Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), or clubfoot, is a common congenital lower limb disorder. Pre-natal diagnosis using ultrasound (US) enables early identification, facilitating timely intervention and improving outcomes. Understanding the diagnostic accuracy and implications of pre-natal CTEV detection is essential for effective clinical management.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This observational cohort study evaluated pre-natal US accuracy in detecting CTEV. Two thousand singleton pregnancies between 18 and 24 weeks of gestation were included. Exclusions applied to complicate and

We investigated to what extent the Ponseti technique is successful in radiologically aligning the deformed foot when the deformity was clinically corrected. This prospective study radiologically evaluated Ponseti-treated clubfoot children (Pirani score zero) at a minimum follow-up of 5 years. The radiographs obtained were foot anteroposterior and lateral views (standing views). The angles evaluated in the anteroposterior view were the talocalcaneal and the talus first metatarsal angle. In the lateral view, calcaneal fifth metatarsal, talocalcaneal, talus first metatarsal, tibiocalcaneal, and c

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate foot kinematics during gait in individuals with idiopathic clubfoot initially treated with the Ponseti method, focusing on clubfoot-specific deformities, to improve the understanding of posttreatment functional impairments.
METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, 23 patients with treated idiopathic clubfoot (34 feet) were compared with 15 age-matched healthy controls (30 feet). Gait analysis was performed using the Heidelberg Foot Model. To characterize residual clubfoot deformities, selected kinematic parameters included medial arch and subtalar an

Background: Congenital talipes equinovarus (clubfoot) affects 1-2 per 1000 newborns worldwide. The Ponseti method, based on staged manipulations and casting, is the gold standard for correction. However, the biomechanical processes underlying these corrections remain poorly understood, as infants rarely undergo imaging. Computational modeling may offer a non-invasive approach to studying correction pathways and exploring novel applications, such as customized casts. Methods: We developed a proof-of-concept framework using iterative finite element analysis (iFEA) to approximate the surface-leve

PURPOSE: Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) or idiopathic clubfoot, is a common yet complex congenital musculoskeletal deformity characterized by cavus, adductus, varus and equinus components. Despite advances in conservative and surgical management, recurrence and long-term functional limitations remain unresolved challenges. This review aims to provide an integrative synthesis of the historical evolution, embryological basis, etiological theories and clinical implications of idiopathic clubfoot.
METHODS: A narrative literature review was conducted, synthesizing data from historical recor

BACKGROUND: Multiple molecular diagnoses (MMD) involve distinct or overlapping phenotypes. They are not so rare in the field of congenital anomalies, given an overall 3.5%-8% rate. Mainly, MMD imply distinct genotypes. Exceptionally, genotypes are linked, involving a causal CNV by itself, facing a SNV for a recessive disorder resulting in a dual diagnosis.
METHODS: An unrelated couple was referred at 21 + 3 weeks of gestation for talipes equinovarus, cerebellar hypoplasia, clenched fists, elevated hemidiaphragm, and micrognathia. Chromosomal microarray and exome sequencing analyses were perfo

BACKGROUND: Dopa-responsive dystonia (DRD) is a group of rare forms of genetically determined dystonia. Large improvements of symptoms can be seen with small doses of levodopa. As a treatable condition, it must be diagnosed and treated to improve the patients' functional outcome and quality of life.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of a woman affected by progressive gait impairment and lower limb rigidity, started at the age of 15. For talipes equinovarus (clubfoot), she underwent Achilles tendon lengthening and anterior tibial haemitendon transposition surgery. Family history collecti
