Assessment of Gross Motor Skills in Ponseti-treated Children With Idiopathic Clubfoot at 3 Years Old: Insights from the Peabody Developmental Motor Scale 2.

BACKGROUND: Congenital talipes equinovarus, or clubfoot, can lead to lifelong functional impairments, including diminished gross motor skills (GMS), if left untreated. The Ponseti method corrects idiopathic clubfoot through casting and bracing. Given the importance of GMS in childhood development, this technique must be optimized to support childhood and long-term health outcomes. This study examined immediate posttreatment GMS in 3-year-old children treated with Ponseti, hypothesizing that they would perform on par with their nonclubfoot peers. METHODS: Data from 45 children (33 to 46 mo of

Prenatal Counseling for Congenital Clubfoot.

UNLABELLED: Congenital clubfoot is a common deformity that affects 1 in 1000 newborns and is frequently detected prenatally during routine prenatal care. A wide variety of detection methods and testing are used to identify clubfoot and other congenital anomalies in the fetus, including complete ultrasonography, amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, or cell-free DNA. Newer studies have associated certain genome sequences to clubfoot specifically. It is important for orthopaedic surgeons to understand the implications of the various tests to provide the appropriate prenatal counseling. Early

Cost analysis of outpatient services for major external structural birth defects: an ingredient approach in selected hospitals in Kiambu County, Kenya.

INTRODUCTION: major external structural birth defects (MESBDs) are known to exert an enormous economic burden on individuals and health services; however, they have been vastly underprioritized as a public health problem in settings where cost analyses are limited. This study aimed at conducting a cost analysis of outpatient services for MESBDs in selected hospitals in Kiambu County, Kenya. METHODS: a cross-sectional descriptive survey was conducted in four hospitals selected for providing outpatient corrective and rehabilitative services to the under-fives. An ingredient approach was used to

Fetal Autopsy: Insights Into the Spectrum of Dysraphisms With Associated Anomalies.

Introduction and aim Malformations of the central nervous system (CNS) are one of the most devastating, yet most common congenital anomalies. Congenital CNS anomalies are structural or functional abnormalities of the brain and spinal cord that occur during the intrauterine developmental period and have a high intrauterine mortality. This study aimed to determine the frequency and distribution of neural tube defects (NTDs) in a tertiary care center for a period of 4.5 years. The neural tube defect was analyzed along with the other associated anomalies in the fetus. Its association with maternal

Expanded prenatal phenotype of ALG12-associated congenital disorder of glycosylation including bilateral multicystic kidneys.

Congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG) are a group of rare autosomal recessive genetic disorders caused by pathogenic variants in genes coding for N-glycosylated glycoproteins, which play a role in folding, degrading, and transport of glycoproteins in their pathway. ALG12-CDG specifically is caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in ALG12. Currently reported features of ALG12-CDG include: developmental delay, hypotonia, failure to thrive and/or short stature, brain anomalies, recurrent infections, hypogammaglobulinemia, coagulation abnormalities, and genitourinary abnormalities. Musculoskeletal Issues in Children and Adolescents: Abnormal Findings on the Newborn Musculoskeletal Examination.

Prenatal and delivery history guides a thorough musculoskeletal examination of the newborn. Amniotic bands from amniotic sequence/syndrome typically are apparent on visual inspection but may present as limb amputation. Management is guided by the degree of tissue compromise. Risk factors for birth trauma are maternal obesity, pelvic anomalies, macrosomia, and operative delivery. Fractures of the clavicle, humerus, and femur heal well with few sequelae. Splinting recommendations differ for each. Polydactyly, syndactyly, and clinodactyly are associated with syndromic conditions. In general, most

STAC3 disorder: a common cause of congenital hypotonia in Southern African patients.

STAC3 disorder, or Native American myopathy, is characterised by congenital myopathy, hypotonia, musculoskeletal and palatal anomalies, and susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia. A STAC3 c.851 G > C (p.Trp284Ser) pathogenic variant, common in the Lumbee Native American tribe, has been identified in other populations worldwide, including patients of African ancestry. We report on the frequency of STAC3 c.851 G > C in a cohort of 127 patients presenting with congenital hypotonia that tested negative for spinal muscular atrophy and/or Prader-Willi syndrome. We present a clinical retrospective,

TRAPPC11-CDG muscular dystrophy: Review of 54 cases including a novel patient.

The trafficking protein particle (TRAPP) complex is a multisubunit protein complex that functions as a tethering factor involved in intracellular trafficking. TRAPPC11, a crucial subunit of this complex, is associated with pathogenic variants that cause a spectrum of disease, which can range from a limb girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMD) to developmental disability with muscle disease, movement disorder and global developmental delay (GDD)/intellectual disability (ID), or even a congenital muscular dystrophy (CMD). We reviewed the phenotype of all reported individuals with TRAPPC11-opathies, inc

VACTERL Association in a Fetus With a Normal Genetic Profile.

VACTERL association is a statistical association of vertebral(V), anal(A), cardiac(C), tracheoesophageal(TE), renal(R), and limb(L) abnormalities (VACTERL). Diagnosis of VACTERL can be made if anomalies in three or more organ systems indicated by the acronym are present and no other recognizable pattern of human malformations exists. We hereby present a case of a primigravida in her 20s, whose prenatal scan at 13 weeks of gestation revealed a fetus having a short spine, single outflow tract, and increased nuchal translucency. Chromosome microarray on amniotic fluid showed no quantitative genom

Clubfoot: Congenital Talipes Equinovarus.

Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), also known as clubfoot, is a common musculoskeletal entity that affects one to two per 1000 live births worldwide. Imaging modalities including radiography, US, and MRI have emerged as valuable tools for the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of CTEV. The deformity is characterized by midfoot cavus, forefoot adductus, and hindfoot varus and equinus. The Ponseti method of manipulation and serial casting is the standard treatment of CTEV. Radiography shows the anatomy, position, and relationships of the different bones of the foot. US allows accurate asse

Anterior or Posterior Tibial Tendon Transfer to the Peroneus Tertius for Equinovarus Deformity.

BACKGROUND: Equinovarus deformity correction was performed by soft tissue release and bone deformity correction, and tendon transfer to maintain deformity correction. Because of the high complication rate of tendon fixation methods, partial or total anterior tibial tendon or posterior tibial tendon transfer to the peroneus tertius tendon was reported. The purpose of this study was (i) to review the results of this tendon transfer technique after release and correction of talipes equinovarus, and (ii) to analyze the complication of this technique. METHODS: Between February 2017 and May 2022, 1

De novo TRPM3 missense variant associated with neurodevelopmental delay and manifestations of cerebral palsy.

We identified a de novo heterozygous transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily M (melastatin) member 3 (TRPM3) missense variant, p.(Asn1126Asp), in a patient with developmental delay and manifestations of cerebral palsy (CP) using phenotype-driven prioritization analysis of whole-genome sequencing data with Exomiser. The variant is localized in the functionally important ion transport domain of the TRPM3 protein and predicted to impact the protein structure. Our report adds TRPM3 to the list of Mendelian disease-associated genes that can be associated with CP and provides further e

Unraveling Patterns of Congenital Structural Malformations in Infants: A Hospital-Based Descriptive Study.

Introduction Congenital malformation studies serve several purposes, including establishing baseline rates, monitoring changes over time, exploring the origins of these defects, and helping in planning health services. Increasing public awareness about pediatric surgical interventions is another goal of these studies. However, the impact of congenital malformations is often underestimated in developing countries due to insufficient healthcare data and diagnostic facilities, particularly in rural areas. Families affected by the birth of a child with congenital malformations face significant str

Simple Talectomy is a Beneficial Surgical Procedure for Talipes Equinovarus and Other Severe Neuromuscular Foot Deformities.

Noninvasive techniques are gold standard to redress Severe Neuromuscular Foot Deformity (SNFD). However, simple talectomy may be considered to obtain a stable, plantigrade, pain-free foot. We present a 10-year follow-up accessing radiological correction rates, functional outcomes, complications, and patient satisfaction. This retrospective case series evaluated talectomies in 2012 to 2022. Simple talectomy was combined with Steinman pin fixation of calcaneus to tibia for approximately 6 weeks. Diagnoses primarily included arthrogryposis multiplex congenita and cerebral palsy. Indications were
