INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Congenital hallux varus (CHV) is a very rare foot deformity, defined by the medial deviation of the great toe at the metatarsophalangeal joint. It can appear in isolation or with other anomalies, such as polydactyly, metatarsus adductus, or a longitudinal epiphyseal bracket. However, an association with a ventricular septal defect (VSD) has not been described before. Early surgical correction is essential to restore function, improve cosmetic appearance, and support normal motor development.

Congenital hallux varus (CHV) is an uncommon deformity of the forefoot, defined by the medial deviation of the great toe at the metatarsophalangeal joint, often accompanied by a wide gap between the first and second toes. This condition is associated with footwear difficulties, pain impacting quality of life, and aesthetic concerns. CHV may occur in isolation or alongside other congenital foot abnormalities, such as polysyndactyly or a longitudinal epiphyseal bracket (LEB). We present the case of a 19-month-old boy with bilateral CHV featuring a shortened first metatarsal and significant funct

Talar neck osteotomy (TNO) has been reported as one of the surgical options for cavovarus foot caused by residual congenital clubfoot and neurologic disease in children, or talar neck fracture. However, TNO is rarely reported to correct the neurologic cavovarus foot in adults. We present the case of a 29-year-old male with spina bifida who exhibited a flexible cavovarus deformity of the foot, associated pain during ambulation, and plantar callosities. Preoperative weight-bearing foot radiographs showed cavovarus alignment, and three-dimensional computed tomography demonstrated increased varus/

Larsen of La Réunion Island syndrome (LRS) is an autosomal recessive condition associated with multiple large joint dislocations, clubfeet, severe dwarfism, and distinctive facial features. LRS is caused by a recurrent homozygous variant in B4GALT7 gene with a founder effect in La Réunion population. Proteoglycans (PG) that are a major component of the extracellular matrix, are composed of a core protein connected to a glycosaminoglycans side chain via a tetrasaccharide linker region. B4GALT7 encodes galactosyltransferase I, one of the enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of the linker region.

Forefoot adduction deformity (FAD) (commonly called metatarsus adductus) is reported as the most common congenital foot deformity in newborns. Early diagnosis and treatment are important in rigid cases, as better outcomes have been reported if treatment was initiated before 9 months of age. While casting and splinting is the current standard of care for nonsurgical management of rigid FAD (RFAD), several orthoses have demonstrated equal benefit. The Universal Neonatal Foot Orthotic (UNFO) brace is below ankle orthosis that provides continuous pressure, thereby correcting the deformity without

Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), or clubfoot, is the the most common encountered musculoskeletal defect encountered at birth. Most cases present as an isolated deformity, with up to half of them presenting with bilateral deformity. CTEV have also been reported to present as part of syndromic phenomena. Dr Igancio Ponseti proposed a serial casting programme to correct the foot's cavus, forefoot adduction, varus and equinus. Up to 90% of infants will require a tendo-achilles (TA) tenotomy for the persisting equinus deformity. TA tenotomy is deemed a relatively safe procedure, with the most

BACKGROUND: Collagen VI-related myopathies with pathologic COL6A1, COL6A2, and COL6A3 variants manifest as a phenotypic continuum of rare disorders, including Bethlem myopathy (BM), characterized by early onset muscle weakness, proximal joint contractures, and distal joint laxity. Herein we discuss the concomitant orthopedic manifestations of BM, potential management strategies, and patient outcomes.
METHODS: An IRB-approved retrospective cohort study (n=23) from 2 pediatric institutions with a confirmed diagnosis of BM. Charts were reviewed for demographic data, age of disease presentation a

Clubfoot is a common and complex, multi-segmental, 3-dimensional, congenital foot deformity. The segmental deformities have been recognized for millennia. They are cavus of the forefoot/midfoot, adductus of the midfoot, varus of the hindfoot, and equinus of the ankle, often referred to by the acronym CAVE. However, description of the deformities and their correction have varied over time with changes in consensus terminology for foot deformities and the understanding of foot biomechanics. In this narrative review, the most current terminology for foot deformities and understanding of foot biom

INTRODUCTION: Congenital talipes equino varus (club foot) is a frequent congenital deformity of the foot. The Ponseti method is the gold standard for treatment. It consists of foot manipulation with weekly serial cast, minimally invasive surgery and Dennis-Brown bar up to five years.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the follow-up of patients with PEVAC treated using the Ponseti method.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Descriptive, longitudinal study, during 2013-2019, in patients with PEVAC managed with Ponseti method. We included patients with uni- or bilateral club foot, under two years of age, without prior s

Subtalar joint (STJ) arthrodesis is a well-established and accepted surgical procedure utilized for the treatment of various hindfoot conditions including primary or posttraumatic subtalar osteoarthritis, hindfoot valgus deformity, hindfoot varus deformity, complex acute calcaneal fracture, symptomatic residual congenital deformity, tarsal coalition, and other conditions causing pain and deformity about the hindfoot. Union rates associated with isolated subtalar joint arthrodesis are generally thought to be favorable, though reports have varied significantly, with non-union rates ranging from

Metatarsus adductus is a common transverse plane congenital foot deformity. Achieving anatomic correction can be challenging, as all osteotomy procedures have a steep learning curve. A multitude of complications can occur when using traditional pan-metatarsal osteotomy approaches. The modified Lepird procedure is performed with proximal base osteotomies on all 5 metatarsals oriented dorsal distal to plantar proximal. All screws are inserted parallel to each other, allowing the forefoot to move laterally as a unit. The foot and ankle surgeon is able to dial in with precision the exact amount of

Congenital pathologies of the forefoot encompass two broad entities with vastly different treatments and prognosis: malformations, which occur during the embryonic period and cause anatomical defects, and deformations, which occur during the fetal period on a foot that is configured normally. These deformities are more easily cured when they occur later during the fetal period. When the anomaly is bilateral, a genetic origin must be considered. There are two main entities under the term "deformity": metatarsus adductus and skewfoot (aka "Z"-foot or serpentine foot). Within malformations are br

Club foot or congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) is a common developmental disorder of the foot, affecting 1 per 1,000 live births. The main goal of this study is to evaluate the anatomical bony arrangement of the clubfoot deformity radiologically and to correlate this arrangement with the Pirani clinical scoring system. This descriptive, analytical study was conducted in three centres in Sudan. It recruited all the patients of both sexes with CTEV attending these centres, and excluding children on conservative cast and those who already had surgery. Data were collected using structured ques

The current standard practice of treatment for congenital talipes equinus varus (CTEV) is the Ponseti method of manipulation and casting which requires great compliance by caregivers for casting as well as bracing. There is inconclusive evidence regarding optimal cast change interval. This was a prospective non-randomized study conducted at a tertiary care hospital in South India over a 2-year period with a minimum follow-up of 5 years. The patients were divided into 2 groups, one with cast change interval of 7 days and the other group at 3 days. Children with CTEV with age less than 1 year wi

BACKGROUND: Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), also known as clubfoot, is common congenital orthopedic foot deformity in children characterized by four components of foot deformities: hindfoot equinus, hindfoot varus, midfoot cavus, and forefoot adduction. Although a number of conservative and surgical methods have been proposed to correct the clubfoot deformity, the relapses of the clubfoot are not uncommon. Several previous literatures discussed about the technical details of Ponseti method, adherence of Ponseti protocol among walking age or older children. However there is a necessity t

OBJECTIVE: To describe the long-term outcomes of children at school age who were thought to have isolated idiopathic congenital talipes equino varus (ICTEV) at birth.
METHOD: A retrospective review of all children attending a regional talipes clinic who had achieved school age.
RESULTS: One hundred sixty-three children were followed up. ICTEV was more common in Maori and other Polynesian children and in males. Additional abnormalities were apparent in 30.1% overall, but higher in New Zealand Europeans (43%) than Maori (21%) or other Polynesians (22%). Of the abnormalities, 41% were associate

Clubfoot, talipes equino varus (TEV), is a common congenital foot anomaly. Some cases are resistant to conservative treatment. Many causes of resistance have been reported, among these, the presence of anomalous muscles; however, the effect of the presence of anomalous muscles on the outcome of conservative management is not well studied. These aberrant muscles are discovered during the extensive surgical release as an abnormal finding. The aim of this work is to study the demographic characteristics of patients with resistant TEV that necessitated extensive soft tissue release at Sudan Clubfo

Equinus, varus, cavus, and adduction are typical signs of congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV). Forefoot adduction remains a difficulty from using previous corrective methods. This study aims to develop a corrective method to reduce the severity of forefoot adduction of CTEV children with moderate deformities during their walking age. The devised method was compared with 2 other common corrective methods to evaluate its effectiveness. A Dennis Brown (DB) splint, DB splint with orthopedic shoes (OS), and forefoot abduct shoes (FAS) with OS were, respectively, applied to 15, 20, and 18 CTEV chi
