INTRODUCTION: Congenital hallux varus of secondary type is associated with polydactyly, syndactyly or other congenital deformities of the foot. Such congenital deformities can be addressed in childhood with soft tissue reconstructive procedures. In adulthood, treatment of these deformities is challenging because of soft tissue contractures and rigid bony deformities. To our knowledge, this is the first case report demonstrating the management of neglected secondary congenital hallux varus in adults.
CASE REPORT: We present here a case of a 23 years old male patient who presented to us with un

An accessory penis is a very rare anomaly. Only five cases have been reported thus far to our knowledge. We present the case of a child aged 2 years and 10 months who had a penis-like structure (containing phallus and glans) attached to the right buttock. Associated anomalies were a non-communicating type of colonic duplication, a paramedian stenosed anal opening, a horse-shoe kidney, posterior urethral valves, scoliosis of the lumbo-sacral spine, polydactyly and equino-varus deformity of the right foot. As far as we can tell, this is the first report of an accessory penis associated with colo

INTRODUCTION: Club foot (CF) is characterized by multiple deformities such as varus, adductus and internal rotation of the forefoot. It is well-known and a frequent congenital disorder. CF can concurrently be seen with several diseases but it can rarely manifest as a component of any other syndrome. Ritscher-Schinzel syndrome, or cranio-cerebello-cardiac syndrome, is rarely seen and has autosomal recessive inheritance. It is characterized by cranio-facial, cerebellar and cardiac abnormalities. We report a case diagnosed as Ritscher-Schinzel syndrome concurrent with persistent CF.

The foot may be the site of birth defects. These abnormalities are sometimes suspected prenatally. Final diagnosis depends on clinical examination at birth. These deformations can be simple malpositions: metatarsus adductus, talipes calcaneovalgus and pes supinatus. The prognosis is excellent spontaneously or with a simple orthopedic treatment. Surgery remains outstanding. The use of a pediatric orthopedist will be considered if malposition does not relax after several weeks. Malformations (clubfoot, vertical talus and skew foot) require specialized care early. Clubfoot is characterized by an

A 21-week-old still born female fetus with occipital encepholocele, cleft lip and cleft palate was received from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute, Pondicherry and was studied in detail. It was born to Primigravida, of a second degree consanguineous marriage, with unremarkable family history. The biometric measurements were noted which corresponded to the age of the fetus. Further the fetus was embalmed and dissected. On examination an encephalocele of 2.7×1.5 cm was seen in the occipital region with a midline defect in the occip

INTRODUCTION: Tibial hemimelia/amelia is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by deficiency of the tibia with relatively intact fibula. They can be identified as an isolated disorder or as part of malformation syndromes. This presentation expands the spectrum of tibial hemimelia characterizing its great clinical and radiological variability.
OBSERVATION: A five year old female child, born to unaffected and non-consanguineous parents, presented with deformity and shortening of both legs. There was no other structural anomaly except in both lower limbs. Radiological imaging showed absence of

Congenital clubfoot is a common congenital deformity, characterized by equinus of the hindfoot and adduction of the midfoot and forefoot, with varus through the subtalar joint complex. A cavus deformity will also be present. The etiology of this congenital deformity remains elusive. Muscle anomalies are not commonly found in patients with idiopathic clubfoot, and, when present, their significance is not clear. The presence of a flexor digitorum accessorius longus muscle and an accessory soleus muscle found at surgical correction of clubfoot deformity has been previously reported. Our case was

BACKGROUND: Results from a comparative study of Ponseti versus surgical management for congenital talipes equino varus (CTEV), using historically managed patients, are presented. No bias existed in terms of management choice or participants recruited.
METHODS: Twenty-three surgically treated children (31 club feet; mean age 9.1 y) and 29 treated by the Ponseti technique (42 club feet; mean age 6.5 y) agreed to participate in the study. Twenty-six typically developing children (mean age 7.9 y) were also recruited as a control group. A physical examination and 3-dimensional gait analyses were c

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the results of Ponseti technique in the management of congenital Talipes Equino Varus (CTEV) in neonatal age group.
METHODS: It is a prospective observational study, conducted during the period of July 2010 to December 2011 at the Department of Pediatric Surgery in a tertiary hospital. All the neonates with CTEV were treated with Ponseti casting technique. Neonates with other congenital deformities, arthrogryposis and myelomeningocele were excluded.
RESULTS: Total 58 CTEV feet of 38 neonates were treated. Twenty six were males and 12 were f

Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) is a condition of the lower limb in which there is fixed structural cavus, forefoot adductus, hindfoot varus and ankle equinus. In Caucasian populations the incidence is around 1.2 per 1,000 live births, with a male to female ratio of 2.25:1. The left and right feet are equally commonly affected, and 50% of cases are bilateral. It is important to differentiate CTEV from a non-structural or positional talipes which is fully correctable. This positional variant occurs about five times as commonly as CTEV. The latter condition does not require casting or surg

We report the case of a 2-week-old girl born at term (by vaginal delivery and without antenatal or perinatal events) who was referred as having "bilateral talipes and bilateral proximal symphalangism of little and ring fingers." The "talipes" was atypical with marked equinus and varus, but no cavus or adductus of the midfoot. Her mother had both symphalangism (absence of proximal interphalangeal joints) of middle, ring, and little fingers bilaterally and fixed pes planus with a rigid fixed hindfoot-and these deformities had also been present from birth. The maternal grandmother was similarly a

When evaluating foot and hand malformations in children, the orthopaedic surgeon must always consider the possibility of a more serious underlying syndrome with other accompanying abnormalities of organogenesis. We report the case of a 13-year-old female with Hand-Foot-Genital syndrome presenting to our foot and ankle clinic with tarsal coalition and hallux valgus interphalangeus - an unusual variation on the previously reported hallux varus associated with the syndrome. She was subsequently found to have a novel mutation in the HOXA13 gene. To our knowledge, this is the first report of Hand-F

The absence of the hallucal sesamoid is a rare condition. Rarer still is the presentation of adolescent hallux valgus with the absence of both hallucal sesamoid. Seven cases of absence of the tibial sesamoid bone and 3 cases of absence of the fibular sesamoid bone have been found in the literature, and only a single case of bilateral absence of both sesamoid bones with hallux varus has been reported. We would like to present a unique case of bilateral absence of the hallucal sesamoid in an 18-year-old woman with severe adolescent hallux valgus but no other apparent congenital deformity.

A detailed clinical examination is an essential component in the assessment of the cavus foot. A complex interaction of pathologic conditions can only be assessed completely with physical examination. Imaging such as computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may confound the physician, such as in anterior talofibular ligament tears on MRI while the ankle is stable or arthritic joints that are asymptomatic but abnormal on imaging. At the end of the day, the physical examination supersedes all other investigations. After investigations have been performed, the patient needs to be r

The aim of this study was to study the effectiveness of modified ankle foot orthosis fabricated from low-temperature thermoplastics, as an alternative orthosis for the maintenance of correction in idiopathic congenital talipes equino varus (CTEV) deformity. The study was conducted in infants after the completion of the Ponseti serial manipulation and cast treatment, with or without, percutaneous Achilles tenotomy. Both male and female infants with unilateral or bilateral CTEV deformity were included in our study. A custom-made modified ankle foot orthosis was fabricated on the day of the remov

BACKGROUND: Talipes Equino-Varus (TEV) is one of the most common congenital anomaly. It is managed by various methods, i.e., conservative & surgery. Objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of modified Turco's postero-medical release in children's having congenital TEV.
METHODS: This descriptive observational study was conducted from June 2004 to June 2008 in the Orthopaedics Unit of Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) Peshawar. The inclusion criteria were children of age 6 months to 3 years of age having moderate and severe club foot. The exclusion criteria were clubfoot secondary to so

BACKGROUND: Subtalar arthrodesis is a common procedure for treating subtalar arthrosis. An isolated lateral incision can be used as an approach to subtalar fusion alone. However, it can be a difficult approach for correction of varus or valgus hindfoot deformities through the subtalar joint; especially if it involves distraction to correct calcaneal alignment. Less commonly, two-incision or single-incision medial approaches also have been described, but distraction and angular correction can still be difficult. We present an alternative method, using a posterior Achilles tendon-splitting proce

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The navicular bone lies at the apex of the deformity in severe talipes planovalgus with forefoot abductus, in the residual cavus of congenital talipes equinovarus, in certain cases of congenital convexity, and in certain types of neurological equinovarus. Resection of the navicular bone can be proposed to correct certain deformities.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This series included 15 feet operated on in 13 children from 1980 to 2003. The deformity to be corrected was a residual cavus after surgery for congenital talipes equinovarus (five feet), plantar and medial dislocation

BACKGROUND: Although one in two firefighters in South Korea have experienced work-related injuries, there are few studies which show the overview description on work-related injuries and its analysis regarding such causes. Therefore, we aimed to show the overview of compensated work-related injuries in order to serve fundamental data for establishing prevention policies on work-related injuries for Korean firefighters.
METHODS: We requested the all claimed work-related injury data of Korean firefighters from 2010 to 2015 to the Korean National Fire Agency (NFA). The data from NFA including 24
