Effects of short foot training on foot posture in patients with flatfeet: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: With lifestyle changes, the prevalence of flatfoot is increasing year by year, with a prevalence of 29%. Flatfoot will lead to an inevitable injury and reduce the quality of life. Short foot exercises can enhance the strength of the intrinsic muscles of the foot and improve the symptoms of flatfoot. However, there is controversy regarding its specific efficacy. OBJECTIVE: This meta-analysis quantitatively evaluates the effect of short foot training on patients with flatfeet and provides evidence to inform the clinical approach to short foot training in patients with flat feet. Long-term follow-up of a patient with autosomal dominant lower extremity-predominant spinal muscular atrophy-2 due to a BICD2 variant.

INTRODUCTION: Bicaudal D homolog 2 (BICD2) is a causative gene of autosomal-dominant lower extremity-predominant spinal muscular atrophy-2 (SMA-LED2). The severity of SMA-LED2 varies widely, ranging from cases in which patients are able to walk to cases in which severe joint contractures lead to respiratory failure. In this study, we report the long-term course of a case of SMA-LED2 in comparison with previous reports. CASE REPORT: The patient was a 19-year-old woman. She had knee and hip dislocations with contractures, femoral fracture, and talipes calcaneovalgus since birth, and was diagnos

Screening for musculoskeletal system malformations and birth injuries in newborns: Results of a screening program in two hospitals in Shenzen, China.

IMPORTANCE: There are a variety of musculoskeletal malformations and injuries that can occur in newborns. These can be a significant cause of perinatal death or a reason for miscarriage and can lead to long-term functional issues if not managed appropriately. There is no systematic and well-established screening program for neonatal musculoskeletal malformations and injuries in China now. OBJECTIVE: To report the incidence and types of congenital musculoskeletal malformations in two hospitals in Shenzhen City, to explore and discuss the details of the screening procedure and improve future pr

Birth prevalence of congenital anomalies in Argentina, according to socioeconomic level.

Birth prevalence of congenital anomalies (CA) in Argentina is estimated around 1.7%. CA are the second leading cause of infant mortality. Poverty and other adverse socioeconomic conditions have been associated with birth defects. To describe the prevalence at birth of CA, according to the two proxy variables of socioeconomic level: the health subsector of the hospital where the cases were born (PUB-public versus PRI-private or social security) and its geographical location. The design of the study was ecological using the data of the National Network of Congenital Anomalies of Argentina (RENAC

Is foot deformity associated with developmental dysplasia of the hip?

AIMS: To assess if congenital foot deformity is a risk factor for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). METHODS: Between 1996 and 2012, 60,844 children were born in Sør-Trøndelag county in Norway. In this cohort study, children with risk factors for DDH were examined using ultrasound. The risk factors evaluated were clinical hip instability, breech delivery, a family history of DDH, a foot deformity, and some syndromes. As the aim of the study was to examine the risk for DDH and foot deformity in the general population, children with syndromes were excluded. The information has been prosp

Novel BICD2 mutation in a Japanese family with autosomal dominant lower extremity-predominant spinal muscular atrophy-2.

INTRODUCTION: The most common form of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a recessive disorder caused by SMN1 mutations in 5q13, whereas the genetic etiologies of non-5q SMA are very heterogenous and largely remain to be elucidated. We present a father and son with atrophy and weakness of the lower leg muscles since infancy. Genetic studies in this family revealed a novel BICD2 mutation causing autosomal dominant lower extremity-predominant SMA type 2. PATIENTS: The proband was the father, aged 30, and the son was aged 3. Both of them were born uneventfully to nonconsanguineous parents. While th

[Congenital foot abnormalities].

The foot may be the site of birth defects. These abnormalities are sometimes suspected prenatally. Final diagnosis depends on clinical examination at birth. These deformations can be simple malpositions: metatarsus adductus, talipes calcaneovalgus and pes supinatus. The prognosis is excellent spontaneously or with a simple orthopedic treatment. Surgery remains outstanding. The use of a pediatric orthopedist will be considered if malposition does not relax after several weeks. Malformations (clubfoot, vertical talus and skew foot) require specialized care early. Clubfoot is characterized by an

[Spastic equinus foot].

Pes equinus is the most common deformity in cerebral palsy. A primarily dynamic pes equinus without shortening of the calf muscle in many cases turns into a structural pes equinus. This is due to insufficient linear growth of the calf muscle compared to bone growth. Structural pes equinus has to be distinguished from marked, compensatory and forefoot pes equinus. Conservative as well as operative treatment options are often applied in combination or sequentially. In dynamic pes equinus botulinum toxin A is the therapy of choice. Only slight structural pes equinus may improve under botulinum to

Neonatal foot deformities and their relationship to developmental dysplasia of the hip: an 11-year prospective, longitudinal observational study.

In a prospective study over 11 years we assessed the relationship between neonatal deformities of the foot and the presence of ultrasonographic developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). Between 1 January 1996 and 31 December 2006, 614 infants with deformities of the foot were referred for clinical and ultrasonographic evaluation. There were 436 cases of postural talipes equinovarus deformity (TEV), 60 of fixed congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), 93 of congenital talipes calcaneovalgus (CTCV) and 25 of metatarsus adductus. The overall risk of ultrasonographic dysplasia or instability was 1:2

[Subtalar screw-arthroereisis for correction of flat foot in children].

UNLABELLED: Minimally invasive subtalar screw-arthroereisis has gained interest in the correction of flat feet in children. Between 1990 and 2004, this technique was used on 152 children, 74 bilaterally, for a total of 226 feet. There were 82 boys and 70 girls, with an average age of 10.6+/-1.9 years. The results were good in 95.4% of cases, whilst there were complications in 4.6%. For well corrected feet, 55 screws have now been removed, on average 2.9 years after implantation. The indications for such treatment are: talipes calcaneovalgus, which develops into a flat foot (spontaneous correct

Risks of congenital anomalies in large for gestational age infants.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the association between large for gestational age (LGA) and demographic and medical risk factors as well as specific types of congenital anomalies. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective, case-control study on 2,149,617 consecutive births was conducted. LGA was defined as 1.64 SD above the mean weight for gestational age, adjusted by sex and altitude. Risk factor frequency distributions were compared between LGA and normal birth weight neonates. Associations between LGA and 41 infants with isolated congenital anomalies were evaluated. RESULTS: Of 31,897 neonates with congenita

Examination of the newborn foot: positional and structural abnormalities.

Newborn feet come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The foot is malleable, making it susceptible to compression and deformation from intrauterine positioning. Clinicians frequently question whether variations represent deformations, that is, an alteration in the shape and contour of a normally formed foot, as opposed to a true structural malformation. Distinguishing between a temporary positional deformity and a more serious structural foot malformation is challenging and requires a clear understanding of the anatomy of the foot, its complex embryologic development, and the impact of environme

Laterality patterns in infants with external birth defects.

The lateral distribution of external birth defects has not been reported in a comprehensive way, and patterns in this distribution have not been examined. This study presents the lateral distribution of 6,390 unilateral defects from among 102 defect categories in data collected by the Metropolitan Atlanta Congenital Defects Program. Among all defects, 49% (95% CI 48-51%) were right-sided. Among males and females, 51% (95% CI 50-53%) and 47% (95% CI 46-49%) of the defects, respectively, were right-sided. Of the 102 defect types, 57 had an excess of defects on the right side of the body; 39 had

Review of Elmslie's triple arthrodesis for post-polio pes calcaneovalgus deformity.

Twelve patients with residual talipes calcaneovalgus deformity due to poliomyelitis were reviewed. A two-stage Elmslie's arthrodesis was performed on nine patients with rigid deformity. Tendon transfer (peroneus brevis in one, peroneus brevis and longus in two) to the tendo Achillis insertion is used to correct the calcaneus deformity, after reduction of the calcaneus in the subtalar joint, using a Steinmann pin passed through the calcaneus. Good results were obtained in patients treated by arthrodesis. However, the deformity recurred in patients treated only with tendon transfer.

Residual calcaneovalgus deformity: review of the literature and case study.

The treatment of pediatric deformities is relatively common in the typical foot and ankle practice. Talipes calcaneovalgus deformity represents one of the more prevalent deformities. This postural deformity, which is present at birth, is characterized by marked dorsiflexion and valgus position of the foot in relation to the leg. It is essential that an accurate diagnosis is established early and conservative treatment instituted. In most cases, the deformity is highly responsive to conservative therapy consisting of manipulation and casting. Deformity not identified at birth or soon thereafter

Reverse club foot. Rigid and recalcitrant talipes calcaneovalgus.

We describe a congenital deformity of the foot which is characterised by calcaneus at the ankle and valgus at the subtalar joint; spontaneous improvement does not occur and serial casting results in incomplete or impermanent correction of the deformities. Experience with five feet in four children indicates that release of the ligaments and tendons anterior and lateral to the ankle and lateral to the subtalar joint is the minimum surgery necessary; subtalar arthrodesis may be required in addition. The foot deformity described may occur as an isolated condition or in association with multiple c
