Background: Flexible flatfoot is a common pediatric condition. Surgical intervention is indicated for symptomatic cases unresponsive to conservative treatment. This study evaluates the outcomes of two established procedures, Grice extraarticular subtalar arthrodesis and subtalar arthroereisis, in children treated for symptomatic flatfoot. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 158 patients (286 feet) treated between 2013 and 2024. Among them, 34 underwent Grice arthrodesis and 124 underwent arthroereisis. Demographic and procedural data were collected, including age, sex, neurologi

BACKGROUND: Bladder exstrophy is a congenital malformation occurring in fetal development characterized by an open pelvic ring and inferiorly rotated pelvis, impacting typical gait and development. Little is known about the gait patterns in children with bladder exstrophy, especially if they undergo an osteotomy surgery for pelvic reconstruction.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate gait patterns of children with and without bladder exstrophy, as well as children with bladder exstrophy with and without osteotomies.
METHODS: Fifteen participants with bladder exstrophy (mean age 10.6 y;

Fibular hemimelia (FH) is a rare congenital abnormality where the fibula is either totally or partially absent. It can occur alone or alongside other skeletal malformations, and in very few cases, it may occur along with non-skeletal anomalies. A 4-year-old female was diagnosed with unilateral right-sided FH, accompanied by limb shortening, a right-side ankle deformity, valgus foot, and 3 lateral rays that had been totally absent since the first week of birth. And she was incidentally diagnosed with spina bifida occulta at a 3-year-old age. FH is most commonly unilateral and mostly affects the

Hallux valgus (HV) is a common forefoot deformity, and an associated os intermetatarseum is often an incidental and asymptomatic radiographic finding. The role of an os intermetatarseum as a direct etiological factor in HV, particularly when mediated by an anomalous structural tether causing deformity, is unusual. We describe the case of a 16-year-old female who presented with several years of progressive bilateral foot deformity and pain. Clinical examination revealed a rigid moderate HV deformity on the right and a flexible mild HV on the left. Plain radiographs confirmed bilateral HV and an

INTRODUCTION: Ankle arthrodesis is a widely accepted treatment for managing end-stage ankle arthritis and various other conditions, including post-traumatic, inflammatory, congenital, and neurogenic deformities. Several surgical techniques for ankle arthrodesis have been developed, such as open ankle fusion, arthroscopic ankle fusion, and mini-open ankle arthrodesis. The purpose of this study was to explore the range of surgical approaches and techniques used in ankle arthrodesis, with particular emphasis on comparing their outcomes in terms of complications, hospital stay duration, pain relie

Congenital vertical talus (CVT) is the presence of rigid flatfoot deformity characterized by hindfoot valgus and equinus. This foot deformity is associated with midfoot dorsiflexion and forefoot abduction due to a fixed dorsal dislocation of the navicular relative to the head of the talus. It is often underdiagnosed in children due to its similarity to other disorders of the foot. Misdiagnosis of CVT and subsequent failure to address it leads to significant disability and pain. While past surgical management consisted of soft tissue releases that produced varying efficacy, current management o

Frank-Ter Haar syndrome (FTHS), Winchester syndrome (WS), Torg syndrome (TS) and Multicentric Osteolysis Nodulosis and Arthropathy (MONA) are progressive skeletal dysplasia consisting of acro-osteolysis. Mutation in Matrix Metalloproteinase 2 (MMP2), Matrix Metalloproteinase 14 (MMP14) and SH3PXD2B are known genetic defects in these disorders. We hereby report a 5 years and 9 months old girl suffering from progressive limb deformity. She is the first child of a relative couple, who was referred to metabolic disorders' clinic due to poor growth and bone pain. On physical examination, minor faci

Subtalar joint (STJ) arthrodesis is a well-established and accepted surgical procedure utilized for the treatment of various hindfoot conditions including primary or posttraumatic subtalar osteoarthritis, hindfoot valgus deformity, hindfoot varus deformity, complex acute calcaneal fracture, symptomatic residual congenital deformity, tarsal coalition, and other conditions causing pain and deformity about the hindfoot. Union rates associated with isolated subtalar joint arthrodesis are generally thought to be favorable, though reports have varied significantly, with non-union rates ranging from

Congenital pathologies of the forefoot encompass two broad entities with vastly different treatments and prognosis: malformations, which occur during the embryonic period and cause anatomical defects, and deformations, which occur during the fetal period on a foot that is configured normally. These deformities are more easily cured when they occur later during the fetal period. When the anomaly is bilateral, a genetic origin must be considered. There are two main entities under the term "deformity": metatarsus adductus and skewfoot (aka "Z"-foot or serpentine foot). Within malformations are br

BACKGROUNDS: Dyslipidemia is a prominent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and one of the primary independent modifiable factors of diabetes and stroke. Statins can significantly improve the prognosis of dyslipidemia, but its side effects cannot be ignored. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been used in clinical practice for more than 2000 years in China and has certain traits in treating dyslipidemia with little side effect. Previous research has shown that Mutual Obstruction of Phlegm and Stasis (MOPS) is the most common dyslipidemia type classified in TCM. However, how to compose

BACKGROUND: The most common cause of degeneration of the posterior tibial tendon is a congenital valgus deformity of the calcaneus. Other associated pathologies are forefoot supination, forefoot abduction and shortening of the gastrocnemius muscle.
DIAGNOSTICS: Loaded x‑rays of the foot in three planes as well as the hindfoot alignment view enable evaluation of the axis of the foot under static loading conditions. The posterior tibial tendon can be imaged with ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The fatty degeneration of the posterior tibial muscle can be identified in MRI.

CASE: We present an unusual case of unilateral congenital quintus valgus of the left foot (congenital lateral deviation of the fifth [little] toe) in a 1.5-year-old boy. The child had no other congenital malformations. Radiographs revealed the abnormal presence of 2 accessory phalangeal ossicles in the fourth web space, leading to lateral deviation of the fifth toe. Remarkably, the ossicles of the middle and distal phalanges of the fifth toe were absent. Surgical excision of the accessory ossicles was performed, and correction of the deformity was achieved.
CONCLUSION: Congenital quintus valg

Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP) is a rare debilitating disorder characterized by congenital deformity of the great toes from infancy and postnatal heterotopic ossification. Activating mutations in the activin A receptor type 1 (ACVR1) gene are responsible for the disease. The most common allelic variant leading to FOP is c.617 G>A; p.R206H, however, other alleles have been reported with atypical phenotypes. We report 14 cases presenting to a referral institution in South India over a 3-year period. The patients were clinically diagnosed based on foot abnormality or abnormal ectopic

BACKGROUND: The most common historical treatment method for congenital vertical talus is extensive soft-tissue release surgery. A minimally invasive treatment approach that relies primarily on serial cast correction was introduced almost ten years ago, with promising early results. The purpose of this study was to assess the long-term outcome of patients with congenital vertical talus managed with the minimally invasive technique and compare them with a cohort treated with extensive soft-tissue release surgery.
METHODS: The records of twenty-seven consecutive patients with vertical talus (for

The prevalence and distribution of the sesamoid bones in the feet has been reported in the literature with a high degree of variability. This systematic review aims to provide a better estimate of the frequency of the sesamoids of the foot and their association with variables such as ancestry, gender, and side. Thirty-seven studies met the inclusion criteria and were submitted for meta-analyses, sensitivity analyses and proportion difference tests, whenever possible. At the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint of the hallux, sesamoids were nearly always present. At the interphalangeal (IP) joint, t

BACKGROUND: Metatarsus adductus is a common pediatric foot deformity related to intrauterine molding. It is usually a mild deformity that responds well to simple observation or minimal treatment with a home program of stretching. Resistant cases may need a more aggressive approach such as serial casting or special bracing to avoid the need for surgical intervention. We compared clinical outcomes using serial casting with orthoses for resistant metatarsus adductus.
METHODS: We prospectively treated 27 infants (43 feet) between the ages 3 and 9 months who failed home stretching treatment. Patie

BACKGROUND: Ankle valgus is encountered in children with a variety of congenital musculoskeletal disorders, including multiple hereditary exostoses (MHE). Guided growth with temporary distal tibial medial hemiepiphysiodesis (DTMH) may correct the deformity; however, exostoses about the ankle commonly observed in MHE patients may hinder correction and increase the risk of recurrence. Thus, the purpose of this study was to review the outcomes of DTMH in treatment of ankle valgus in MHE versus other diagnosis (non-MHE).
METHODS: Medical records and radiographs of patients undergoing DTMH for ank

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effectiveness of limited operations and Ilizarov techniques for correction of congenital clubfoot (CCF) in adolescents, and to explore the new methods and new ideas for functional reconstruction of CCF.
METHODS: Between September 2003 and July 2010, 25 adolescent patients (40 feet) with CCF were treated. Of the 25 patients, 14 were male (20 feet) and 11 were female (20 feet) with an age range from 12 to 25 years (mean, 15.7 years). The left feet were involved in 4 cases, the right feet in 6 cases, and both feet in 15 cases. According to Qin's clubfoot deformity scale

BACKGROUND: Surgical resection of persistently painful talocalcaneal tarsal coalitions may not reliably relieve symptoms in patients with large coalitions associated with excessive hindfoot valgus deformity and subtalar posterior facet narrowing. Since 1991, calcaneal lengthening osteotomy, with or without coalition resection, has been used at our institution to relieve symptoms and to preserve motion at the talonavicular and calcaneocuboid joints.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records for eight patients with thirteen painful talocalcaneal tarsal coalitions who had undergone a calc
