BACKGROUND: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), a common inherited neurologic disorder, significantly impacts the morphology of foot bones, particularly the talus. The disease has been classified into types based on specific mutations, with the most common being CMT type 1 (CMT1; demyelinating) and CMT type 2 (CMT2; axonal). However, the specific osseous morphologic variations in CMT patients and their major genetic subgroups remain insufficiently understood, posing challenges in clinical management and surgical intervention.
METHODS: This study analyzed talar morphology in individuals with CM

Associated coalitions of tarsal bones, either unilateral or bilateral, may be classified to developmental or syndromic types. There are no specific patterns for osseous or nonosseous configurations of associated tarsal coalitions. Associated developmental tarsal coalitions can be categorized into dual, threefold, massive, and total tarsal coalitions according to the number and sites of the involved joints. Dual coalitions are more common than other types. Among dual tarsal coalitions, the most frequent combination is talocalcaneal (TC) and calcaneonavicular coalitions, also referred to as doub

BACKGROUND: Congenital clubfoot is a common idiopathic foot abnormality that manifests in newborns. Vascular deficiencies have been suggested as one of the underlying etiologies of clubfoot. The question in hand was: "Is the return of capillary filling to the foot post-Achilles tenotomy correlated with both the arterial supply to the foot and degree of ankle equinus"?
METHODS: This clinical study included 30 unilateral idiopathic clubfeet. All patients were assessed clinically using the Pirani score, then manipulation using the Ponseti technique, followed by examination of the infragenicular

BACKGROUND: Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), or clubfoot, is one of the most common foot deformities seen at birth. The Ponseti technique is the most common method to treat clubfoot and consists of gentle manipulation with serial casting, a percutaneous Achilles tendon tenotomy, and bracing for the first few years of life. The purpose of this study was to determine whether socioeconomic factors influence compliance with clubfoot bracing for families with infants who have idiopathic clubfoot treated by the Ponseti method.
METHODOLOGY: All patients with clubfoot deformity who began primar

BACKGROUND: Although it is suggested that the morphometry of the medial protrusion of tuberosity of navicular bone (TNm) and tibialis posterior (TP) tendons is related to this pathology, there is insufficient evidence. This study aimed to reveal the relations of the medial longitudinal arch (MLA) with the tendons of the TP and the TNm.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dissections of this study were performed on the dorsal and plantar aspects of 34 formalin-fixed cadavers and amputated feet (15 female, 19 male). All attachment sites and connections of the main TP (TPmt) and slips are evaluated and class

BACKGROUND: The foot arch is an important structural characteristic that plays a key role in supporting weight and facilitating movement. Flat foot might result in difficulties due to changes in biomechanics and muscular imbalances.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the differences of isometric strength, range of motion, ankle mobility in participants with normal medial longitudinal arch and flat foot.
METHODS: A Comparison cum correlation cross-sectional study was conducted with twenty-eight normal medial longitudinal arch and twenty-eight with flat foot participants were ra

BACKGROUND: In the authors' opinion the prevalence of equinus foot deformities is an underestimated medical and socioeconomic problem that has not yet been adequately investigated. A dorsiflexion in the ankle joint of < 10° can lead to limitations in gait.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of equinus foot deformities based on the degree of restriction of dorsiflexion in the ankle joint in hospitalized patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study the active range of motion of the ankle joint in 205 patients at Münster University Hospital

Flexible flat feet are one of the most common musculoskeletal concerns presenting to paediatric health services, despite this being an expected finding in children under 10 years and only requiring management when symptoms are associated. Understanding which symptoms are associated with symptomatic presentations of flexible flat foot in children will provide clarity in identifying those that require further assessment and/or intervention. A scoping review of the literature was conducted to gather all known symptoms related to symptomatic flexible flat foot in the child. Data was mapped using t

BACKGROUND: Equinus foot is a frequent deformity in children with cerebral palsy (CP). After calf-muscle lengthening surgery, foot drop is frequent and seems to occur mainly in unilateral CP cases. It remains unclear if this complication can be prevented with same-procedure transfer or shortening of dorsiflexor tendons.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 167 ambulant children with unilateral and bilateral CP, GMFCS levels I to III, who received surgical calf-muscle lengthening. Pre- and postoperative 3D instrumented gait analysis and clinical examination data were reviewed.
RESULTS: Stance a

Rotational and angular variations of the lower extremities in children are common conditions seen in primary care. These visits are often due to parental concerns about the appearance of their child's lower extremities. Common variations include intoeing (metatarsus adductus, internal tibial torsion, and femoral anteversion); out-toeing (external tibial torsion, femoral retroversion, and pes planus); and angular variations (genu varum and genu valgum). History, particularly age of onset; duration; progression; appearance and impact; prenatal and birth history; nutritional deficiencies; growth

BACKGROUND: Clubfoot prevalence in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population (hereafter Indigenous population) is reportedly higher than globally. This study enumerates and describes the isolated (also 'idiopathic') clubfoot population in Australia's Northern Territory (NT), where 30% of the population is Indigenous.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, medical records were searched to identify all cases in the NT born in 2009-22 inclusive. Birth prevalence was calculated by using established methods. Logistic regression estimated odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI

BACKGROUND: Flexible flatfoot is a prevalent musculoskeletal condition in pediatric populations, often regarded as a benign and self-limiting developmental variation. However, persistent cases may contribute to discomfort, functional limitations, and reduced physical activity levels. Despite its frequency, few studies have comprehensively evaluated its functional impact using standardized clinical and functional assessment tools in school-aged children.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to (1) determine the prevalence of flexible flatfoot among children aged 6-12 years using standardized clinical

BACKGROUND: Clubfoot is the most common congenital abnormality of the lower extremity. The widely accepted Ponseti casting method includes a series of manipulations and casts often followed by Achilles tenotomy then use of a foot abduction orthosis. Some evidence suggests initiation of casting within a week of age improves outcomes but access to care and socioeconomic factors can impact timing of casting initiation. This study evaluates differences in clinical outcomes, demographic variables, and Child Opportunity Index (COI) between patients who initiated treatment before and after 4 weeks of

BACKGROUND: Anterior midfoot tarsectomy remains difficult to achieve for the treatment of cavovarus foot. Computer-assisted planning and printed patient-specific cutting guides (PSCG) aim to reduce technical errors. This study investigated the accuracy and safety of PSCG-assisted anterior tarsectomy from a cadaveric analysis.
HYPOTHESIS: PSCGs provide an accurate correction and safety, disregarding the experience of the operator.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten foot and ankle specimen underwent an anterior tarsectomy using PSCG with a dorsal closed-wedge effect of 15°. An initial CT-scan of the fo

INTRODUCTION: Given the inconclusive evidence regarding the effects of foot orthoses in flatfoot management, this study aimed to assess the impact of two distinct types of foot orthoses on three-dimensional bone alignment of the foot using advanced imaging techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen fresh-frozen cadaveric feet showing radiological signs of progressive collapsing foot deformity were collected. Two different types of foot orthoses, type I with medial support and lateral counter-support and type II with an additional metatarsal pad, were custom-made. The feet were loaded using a t
