Differential Effects of Maternal Exposures on Clubfoot Laterality: A Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Clubfoot is a common birth defect that affects one or both feet. Evidence suggests increased risks of clubfoot in offspring associated with maternal medication and cigarette smoking exposure in early pregnancy. We explored whether such associations differed by clubfoot laterality. METHODS: This case-control study was conducted in Massachusetts, North Carolina, and New York (2007-2011). State birth defects registries reported clubfoot diagnoses among infants aged < 11 months. Controls without birth defects were random samples of infants from the same catchment areas and born in the

Diagnostic Insights into Multiple Unilateral Tarsal Coalitions in a Nonsyndromic Patient: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Tarsal coalition is an abnormal union between 2 or more tarsal bones that can potentially cause pain, stiffness, and altered foot biomechanics. CASE REPORT: A 49-year-old man presented to the clinic with chronic dorsal pain in the left foot. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed multiple unilateral nonosseous calcaneonavicular and talocalcaneal coalitions, with associated bone marrow edema. Conservative treatment of the condition, including range-of-motion and strengthening exercises, resulted in gradual improvement. CONCLUSION: This case underscores the importance of MRI in

Lower Limb Symmetry Index in Cavus and Normal Feet by Means of a Baropodometric Platform: A Case-Control Study.

High-arched feet affect approximately 10%-15% of the general population. Although the relationship between plantar pressure and bilateral symmetry is well studied, there is limited evidence regarding the use of Symmetry Index and pressure platforms. The objective of the study is to compare dynamic foot pressures and Symmetry Index during gait between subjects with Pes Cavus and subjects with normal feet. The analysis of asymmetric pressure patterns could benefit from studies that compare dynamic foot pressures and Symmetry Index values in subjects with high-arched feet and normal feet. This an

[Special flatfoot pathologies of the hindfoot and midfoot].

Flatfoot pathologies in adolescents and adults are among the most common deformities of the hindfoot and midfoot. The etiology is multifactorial and often difficult to precisely classify in individual cases, which is why orthotic insoles and foot exercises often remain the only conservative therapeutic measure; however, there are typical clinical presentations that, while not frequently encountered in everyday practice, can lead to misinterpretation and the missed opportunity for important therapeutic interventions. Therefore, this article discusses the Müller-Weiss syndrome, tarsal coalition

Discovery of Hyperelastic Constitutive Laws from Experimental Data with EUCLID.

Aseptic nonunion is prevalent in orthopedic practice, causing persistent pain and functional impairment. Humeral shaft fractures, accounting for 3-5% of all fractures, have nonunion rates of 2-33% in nonoperative and 5-10% in surgical management. This study, the largest case series on operative management of humeral shaft nonunion, examines surgical techniques and outcomes. This retrospective study, conducted at a referral center in eastern India, included 132 patients with aseptic humeral shaft nonunion from 2002 to 2020. Cases were from May 2002 to April 2012 and May 2015 to December 2020. P

Clinical and radiological long-term outcomes after resection of tarsal coalitions in children and adolescents: a case series with a minimum of a six year-follow-up.

PURPOSE: Resection of tarsal coalitions aims to relieve pain and restore hindfoot mobility, especially in young, active patients over the long term. This study investigated (1) long-term differences in clinical outcomes between calcaneonavicular (CN) and talocalcaneal (TC) coalition resections; (2) the frequency and clinical relevance of re-ossification; and (3) radiological signs of osteoarthritis in adjacent hindfoot joints. METHODS: In this case series, 29 feet from 24 patients with a minimum follow-up of 80 months after tarsal coalition resection were examined. Clinical assessments includ

Unraveling the genetic association between obesity-related anthropometric indices and foot deformities in the European population: A two-sample Mendelian randomization study.

Obesity and foot deformities pose substantial public health burdens globally. However, their causal relationship remains uncertain due to confounding and reverse causation in observational studies. This study aimed to investigate causal associations between obesity-related anthropometric indices and foot deformities using Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. This two-sample MR study utilized genetic instruments from publicly available genome-wide association studies databases. We extracted single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) as instrumental variables for obesity (6 SNPs), body mass index

Morphological Similarities of Chronic Ankle Instability and Cavus Foot Type Using Statistical Shape Modeling.

Chronic ankle instability (CAI) can develop in up to 40% of patients after a first-time ankle sprain. Advanced imaging and statistical shape modeling (SSM) provide the opportunity to evaluate if subtle differences in foot and ankle morphology, such as hindfoot alignment or cavus features, may contribute to structural predispositions for recurrent instability. In this study, a 14-bone SSM was created from weight-bearing CT data (n = 80) from patients with CAI (n = 23), cavus foot type (n = 29), and rectus (n = 28) foot type. Scans for the CAI group were from pre-operative imaging of patients un

A comprehensive weightbearing computed tomography study: the pathogenesis of first metatarsal pronation in sesamoid bone displacement, due to hallux valgus deformity and progressive collapsing foot deformity (PCFD).

PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore the biomechanical interrelationships in Progressive Collapsing Foot Deformity (PCFD), also known as flatfoot, with concurrent hallux valgus (HV), first metatarsal pronation and sesamoid bone displacement. The primary purposes were to quantify correlations between arch collapse, first metatarsal rotation, HVA (hallux valgus angle), and sesamoid displacement using weight-bearing computed tomography (WBCT), which provides superior three-dimensional insights compared to traditional radiographs. The central research question was: How is M1 rotation related to al

Effect of concomitant flatfoot on surgical outcomes following isolated talocalcaneal coalition resection in adult patients: a retrospective study.

PURPOSE: A greater hindfoot valgus angle is potentially associated with worse outcomes after talocalcaneal coalition (TCC) resection. However, the impact of concomitant flatfoot on TCC resection outcomes remains controversial. The aim of this study was to discuss the effect of flatfoot on the outcomes of isolated TCC resection. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients who underwent isolated resection for symptomatic TCC between 2016 and 2024. Patients were divided into flatfoot (FF, n = 20) and non-flatfoot groups (NF, n = 25) based on the diagnostic criteria for radiograph

Clinical outcomes of optimized versus plain prefabricated insoles for mechanical foot pain in subtle Cavus foot: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Subtle cavus foot (SCF), identified by the "peek-a-boo" sign and a positive Coleman block-test, is frequently associated with mechanical foot pain. While prefabricated insoles are commonly used in clinical practice, evidence supporting their effectiveness in SCF - particularly when modified according to SCF-specific design principles - is limited. PURPOSE: This prospective randomized controlled trial compared Specifically Optimized Prefabricated Insoles (SOPI) with unmodified Plain Prefabricated Insoles (PPI) in individuals with clinically identified SCF and mechanical foot pain.

Combination of midfoot derotational osteotomy and ankle arthrodesis against neglected clubfoot: a case report.

Neglected congenital clubfoot in adults is difficult to manage. Multi-joint arthrodesis is often required but is invasive and associated with complications. We report an adult case treated with ankle arthrodesis and midfoot derotational osteotomy. A 59-year-old man with untreated idiopathic clubfoot since birth presented with severe hindfoot varus and rigid midfoot inversion, leading to wheelchair dependence. Imaging showed correctable hindfoot deformities but rigid midfoot inversion with talonavicular subluxation. Surgery consisted of Achilles tendon lengthening, ankle and subtalar arthrodesi
