Case report of severe unilateral posterior scissors bite in children treated with clear aligners.

UNLABELLED: Posterior scissors bite is a clinically common severe malocclusion, which often leads to impaired masticatory function, unilateral mastication habit and progressive facial asymmetry. This case report presented an 8-year-old boy with severe unilateral posterior scissors bite in mixed dentition, who received early interceptive orthodontic treatment with bracket-free clear aligners combined with alternating intermaxillary traction. The treatment procedures included staged expansion of dental arch width, uprighting of severely lingually inclined molars, and complete correction of poste

Nonsurgical Correction of Brodie Bite in Mixed Dentition Using Quad-Helix Expansion: A Case Report.

This case report presents a nonsurgical correction of a dentoalveolar Brodie bite in a mixed dentition patient using a quad-helix appliance. Mandibular expansion resolved the transverse discrepancy within 3 months, improving occlusion, and eliminating a habitual mandibular shift that had contributed to facial asymmetry.

Isolated Congenital Facial Nerve Aplasia in a 13-Year-Old Child: Imaging Findings and Long-Term Functional Adaptation.

Facial nerve palsy at birth is an uncommon neurological condition that may arise from perinatal trauma or developmental abnormalities involving the facial nerve or its nucleus. While traumatic facial palsy is relatively common and often demonstrates spontaneous recovery, developmental causes such as facial nerve hypoplasia or aplasia are rare and usually associated with persistent deficits. In many cases, developmental facial palsy occurs as part of congenital syndromes involving multiple cranial nerves or systemic anomalies. Isolated absence of the facial nerve without associated syndromic fe

Hydranencephaly in Neonate With Prenatal Exposure to Alcohol During Pregnancy.

Hydranencephaly (HE) is a rare congenital condition characterized by near-total absence of the cerebral hemispheres, replaced by cerebrospinal fluid, most commonly resulting from in utero bilateral internal carotid artery occlusion; although maternal alcohol consumption is associated with fetal neurodevelopmental abnormalities, its direct role in HE remains unclear. We report a case of a 42-year-old multiparous woman with chronic alcohol use throughout pregnancy who delivered a female neonate at 40 + 5 weeks via spontaneous vaginal delivery. The neonate presented with facial asymmetry and a bo

Goldenhar Syndrome-Embryological, Anatomical, Etiopathogenic Mechanisms and Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Goldenhar syndrome is a developmental defect of the 1st and 2nd brachial arches. Facial asymmetry and ear-eye abnormalities are observed. Frequent presence of concomitant issues, including severe OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) and sialorrhea, have also been recorded. The presentation of Goldenhar syndrome is highly variable, and treatment procedures also differ, with surgical treatment often being mandatory. Common symptoms of OSA include loud snoring, gasping, and morning headaches. If untreated, it may lead to high blood pressure, hyperinsulinemia, heart problems, stroke, and daytime sleepine

Nasal Septal Deviation Classifications, Including the Mladina System, and Their Craniofacial Correlates: A Scoping Review.

Background/Objectives: Nasal septal deviation (NSD) is a common anatomical condition that may influence nasal airflow and has been proposed as a potential factor associated with craniofacial growth and morphology. However, available studies use heterogeneous classifications and measurement methods, including the Mladina classification, angular parameters, volumetric assessment, CT, CBCT, and cephalometric analyses. This scoping review aimed to map and synthesize the available evidence on the relationship between NSD classifications, including the Mladina system, and craniofacial morphological

Intraoral Excision of an Anteromedial Mandibular Condylar Osteoma Combined With Simultaneous Orthognathic Correction.

Mandibular condylar osteoma is a rare benign tumor that may cause progressive facial asymmetry, impaired mastication, and temporomandibular joint dysfunction. Conventional tumor removal through a lateral preauricular extraoral approach is particularly challenging for lesions arising from the anteromedial condyle because of limited access, risk of facial nerve injury, and external scarring. In patients with severe secondary dentofacial deformities, tumor excision alone may also fail to restore functional occlusion. We report a 30-year-old patient with progressive mandibular deviation, malocclus

Management of Complications Following Botulinum Toxin Facial Injections: A Narrative Review.

Botulinum toxin (BoNT) is widely used in the management of neurological disorders and in aesthetic medicine. Although generally safe, facial injections may be associated with complications with relevant functional or aesthetic impact. This narrative review aimed to summarize reported facial complications following BoNT injections and to describe available management strategies. A PubMed search up to November 2025 identified 239 articles; after screening and full-text review, 20 studies met the inclusion criteria. Data were synthesized narratively due to the heterogeneity of study designs. Uppe

Condylar Osteochondroma in an Older Adult With Facial Asymmetry: Case Report and Differentiation From Condylar Hyperplasia.

Condylar osteochondroma is a rare condition that is more common among middle-aged women. Differential diagnoses for condylar osteochondroma include benign or malignant tumors and hyperplastic lesions. In particular, the differentiation between condylar osteochondroma and condylar hyperplasia is difficult due to similar clinical and imaging findings. Here, we describe a rare case of condylar osteochondroma in an older adult woman and discuss the differentiation from condylar hyperplasia, along with the clinical course. The patient was a 63-year-old woman with main complaints of facial asymmetry

Individualized surgical approach for Brodie's syndrome with facial asymmetry: a case report involving mandibular segmentation.

Brodie's syndrome is a rare transverse malocclusion, challenging to manage, particularly in adults with significant skeletal involvement. This report describes an unusual clinical case of surgical treatment for a unilateral presentation of Brodie's syndrome using mandibular segmentation, an approach rarely documented in the literature. The patient, an 18-year-old, presented with mandibular deviation, Class II malocclusion, and posterior scissors bite, with an adequately wide maxilla but evident mandibular constriction. Three-dimensional planning guided a bimaxillary surgical intervention that

Subcutaneous Solitary Fibrous Tumor in the Chin of a Young Adult: A Diagnostic Challenge.

BACKGROUND Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms most commonly originating in the pleura but may also arise in extrapleural sites, including the head and neck region. Subcutaneous SFTs in the chin area are exceptionally rare; only a few cases have been reported. CD34 and Bcl-2 are commonly used immunohistochemical markers in the initial diagnostic workup, and their co-expression is strongly suggestive of an SFT. However, CD34 negativity can be misleading and complicate diagnosis. Accurate identification of SFTs is potentially difficult because of histologic variability

Do mandibular functional units exhibit inherent asymmetry in adults with a normal degree of chin deviation? A cone-beam computed tomography study.

This study aimed to investigate the inherent asymmetry of mandibular functional units and to compare the degree of asymmetry between adults with different sagittal skeletal patterns. Ninety CBCTs scans of normodivergent adults with a normal degree of chin deviation, representing different sagittal skeletal patterns (Classes I, II, and III) were included; 30 each. Three-dimensional mandibular models were generated, and volumetric and linear bilateral measurements were obtained for the hemimandible and the condylar, coronoid, ramus, angular, alveolar, body, and chin units. The degree of asymmetr

The Use of Botulinum Toxin Injections in Peripheral Neuropathic Pain: A Systematic Review of Efficacy and Safety Outcomes.

Peripheral neuropathic pain (PNP), a chronic condition resulting from nerve damage and characterized by altered sensory signaling and central sensitization, poses significant therapeutic challenges. Botulinum toxin (BTX), known for neuromuscular blockades, also exhibits analgesic properties, prompting its investigation for PNP management. However, existing evidence regarding its efficacy and safety is fragmented. This systematic review aimed to synthesize current data on BTX injections for PNP. Guided by PRISMA and the neuromatrix theory, major databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane, Emba

Correlation of Soft and Hard Tissue Deviation in the Middle and Lower Face of Patients With Mandibular Deformity.

OBJECTIVE: Compared with patients without facial deviation, patients with jaw deviation deformity often present ocular plane deviation and inconsistent asymmetric deformity severity between soft and hard tissues. These conditions bring greater uncertainty to diagnostic analysis and increase the difficulty in determining the final jaw position for orthognathic surgery. This study aimed to explore the correlation between soft and hard tissues in the middle and lower facial regions of patients with mandibular deviation, as well as its variation trend with the severity of mandibular deviation, so

Botulinum Toxin in Facial Paralysis: A Neuroaesthetic Framework for Functional, Therapeutic, and Aesthetic Correction.

BACKGROUND: Facial paralysis (FP) produces functional deficits and facial asymmetry that may include neuromuscular discoordination with synkinesis, painful muscle contractions, disturbing facial spasms, and autonomic misdirection such as gustatory lacrimation. Although Botulinum toxin A (BTX-A) is widely used in dermatology for aesthetic indications, its therapeutic and functional role in facial paralysis is less commonly incorporated within a clinical unified framework. OBJECTIVE: To propose a neuroaesthetic framework that integrates functional restoration, therapeutic relief, and correction

AI-Based Angle Map Analysis of Facial Asymmetry in Peripheral Facial Palsy.

Peripheral facial palsy (PFP) causes pronounced facial asymmetry and functional impairment, highlighting the need for reliable, objective assessment. This study presents a novel, fully automated, reference-free method for quantifying facial symmetry using artificial intelligence (AI)-based facial landmark detection. A total of 405 datasets from 198 PFP patients were analyzed, each including nine standardized facial expressions covering both resting and dynamic movements. AI detected 478 landmarks per image, from which 225 paired landmarks were used to compute local asymmetry angles. Systematic
