Facial Asymmetry and Sexuality in Women.

People perceive more symmetrical individuals as more attractive; therefore, facial symmetry has been linked to mate selection. Being perceived as more attractive could also increase women's indirect reproductive benefits that would follow from pronounced sexuality and enhanced mating. Sexuality can be examined either as long-term, through sociosexual orientation, or through current sexual activity and desire. This study explored the relationship between facial asymmetry and female sexuality, while taking into account a relationship status and, due to the potential differences in facial asymmet

Evaluation of Postoperative Facial Asymmetry Index Following Mandibular Reconstruction Using Free Fibular Flap With Condylar Involvement.

BACKGROUND: Loss of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) following mandibulectomy disrupts maxillomandibular continuity and occlusion, potentially resulting in facial asymmetry with functional, structural, and aesthetic consequences. The free fibular flap remains the gold standard for mandibular reconstruction. However, the impact of condylar involvement on postoperative facial asymmetry remains poorly studied. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on patients undergoing free fibular flap mandibular reconstruction at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) between 2023 and 2025. Subject

Automated Classification of Skeletal Facial Asymmetry in CBCT Using a Reproducible 3D Slicer Workflow for Patient-Specific Decision Support.

This study presents an automated pipeline for classifying skeletal facial asymmetry of 170 patients with Class III malocclusion using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). The methodology integrates standardized image preprocessing, mirroring, voxel-based registration, anatomical measurement extraction, dimensionality reduction, and clustering. Principal component analysis (PCA), t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE), and uniform manifold approximation and projection (UMAP) were evaluated using Spectral Clustering with both k-nearest-neighbors (kNN) and radial basis function (RBF

Familial Aplasia Cutis Congenita With Exposure of the Meningeal Membrane: A Case Report.

Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) is a rare congenital malformation characterized by the localized absence of skin and occasionally subcutaneous and bone tissues. Its etiology is multifactorial, and management ranges from conservative wound care to surgical intervention. We report the case of a male newborn presenting with a 4-5 cm ulcerated lesion at the vertex of the scalp, with complete absence of bone tissue and dural exposure. Physical examination revealed syndromic features (facial asymmetry, hypertelorism, low-set ears, and cutaneous syndactyly) and an atrial septal defect. A strong autosom

Unlocking the airway through mandibular distraction followed by TMJ release in bilateral TMJ ankylosis complicated by severe OSA.

An early adolescent with bilateral temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis presented with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), facial asymmetry and reduced mouth opening with an interincisal distance of 2 mm. Baseline polysomnography (PSG) revealed a critically elevated apnoea-hypopnoea index (AHI) of 90.3, consistent with extremely severe OSA. Due to high anaesthetic risk and compromised airway, a staged surgical approach was adopted. A planned tracheostomy was performed during the first-stage procedure to secure the airway with subsequent bilateral mandibular distraction osteogenesis leading to s

Artificial Intelligence in the Management of Facial Palsy: A Narrative Review Across the Care Continuum.

INTRODUCTION: Facial paralysis produces substantial functional and psychosocial impairment which facial reanimation surgery seeks to mitigate by restoring facial movement and improving symmetry. However, despite technical advances in nerve- and muscle-based reconstruction, perioperative evaluation and outcome assessment remain largely subjective and variably reproducible. Artificial intelligence (AI) and computer vision have emerged as tools to provide objective, scalable assessment across the facial reanimation care pathway. METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched ex

Refined classification and surgical techniques for alar base reduction in rhinoplasty: A stepwise approach for optimal aesthetic outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Alar base surgery is a key component of rhinoplasty for achieving balanced nasal proportions and harmony with facial features. Variations in nasal base morphology affect both aesthetic and functional outcomes. METHODS: We present a practical classification framework for alar base deformities and describe a stepwise surgical approach tailored to patient-specific anatomical and ethnic characteristics. Surgical strategies for wide alar base, isolated flare, combined deformities, thick alar base, and thick lobule are outlined. Practical intraoperative pearls and tissue-sparing techniq

The spatial mandibular triangle framework for quantifying structural and positional features of mandibular asymmetry: a retrospective diagnostic accuracy study.

OBJECTIVES: To develop and internally validate the Spatial Mandibular Triangle (SMT), a novel geometric framework that quantifies morphological and positional features of mandibular asymmetry. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective diagnostic accuracy study initially included 416 eligible participants. After expert assessment, 17 cases with discordant expert classifications were excluded, leaving 399 participants for analysis: 273 with mandibular asymmetry and 126 controls. A simplified SMT was constructed using bilateral condylar centers and menton. Two dimensionless indices were derived:

RETINAL RACEMOSE HEMANGIOMA ASSOCIATED WITH INTRACRANIAL VASCULAR MALFORMATION (WYBURN-MASON SYNDROME).

PURPOSE: To describe a case of Wyburn-Mason syndrome in a young child with initially declined treatment leading to delayed intervention. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: We report a 6-year-old boy with mild periocular trauma after a fall, who was incidentally found to have a retinal arteriovenous malformation associated with a brain arteriovenous malformation, indicative of Wyburn-Mason syndrome. The patient's visual examination was unremarkable except for a visual acuity of 20/150 in the right eye, corrected to 20/60, and 20/30 in the left eye, along with mild proptosis and facial asymmetry.

Postoperative nostril asymmetry after Le Fort I osteotomy: an analysis of the interplay between alar cinch sutures and intubation side.

BACKGROUND: Orthognathic surgery aims to improve jaw function and facial aesthetics through bilateral sagittal split osteotomy and Le Fort I osteotomy. Recent treatment goals emphasize careful evaluation of aesthetic outcomes, particularly in the nasolabial area, as repositioning the upper jaw can lead to significant soft tissue changes. This study investigates whether nasotracheal intubation affects nostril symmetry in patients undergoing Le Fort I osteotomy with/without cinch sutures. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of adult patients (ages 18-30, ASA I-II) who underwent Le Fort I surgery

Five Steps for Effective Office-Based Neck Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction Under Local Anesthesia: Patient Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The lower face, particularly the neck contour, is an essential element of facial rejuvenation. One of the most effective tools for removing accumulating fat and redraping the neck skin is liposuction, requiring appropriate patient selection for the procedure. METHODS: This retrospective study included patients who underwent office-based neck USS-assisted liposuction under local anesthesia in 2023. This study aimed to measure patient satisfaction and pain during the procedure and the complications associated with the five steps of office-based neck ultrasound-assisted liposuction u

From Social to Symbolic: Investigating the Neural Networks Involved in Emoji and Facial Expression Recognition.

Facial expressions and emojis serve as fundamental social cues, yet their neural processing remains distinct. Using swLORETA source reconstruction based on EEG/ERP signals at N170 stage, we analyzed participant-specific brain activations in 50 young, healthy individuals performing an emotion recognition task with real faces and emojis. Behavioral results revealed higher accuracy and faster reaction times for emojis compared to faces consistent with prior electrophysiological findings on P300 amplitude effects. Both stimulus types activated bilateral fusiform areas (BA19/37) and the orbitofront

Sensitivity to horizontal and vertical spatial relations in younger and older adults' face perception.

As many visual functions, also face perception is subject to age-related decline. Here we addressed whether sensitivity to 2nd order spatial relations among facial features suffers from aging. Thirty-one younger (M = 23.5 years) and fifty-seven older adults (M = 61.7 years) performed a change detection task in same/different format with faces manipulated in eye distance (horizontal, H) and eye height (vertical, V), while the face stimuli were composed of different sets of internal features (eyes, nose and mouth), shown in isolation or with the embedding external feature context (face outline w

Through Massage to the Brain-Neuronal and Neuroplastic Mechanisms of Massage Based on Various Neuroimaging Techniques (EEG, fMRI, and fNIRS).

Introduction: Massage therapy delivers structured mechanosensory input that can influence brain function, yet the central mechanisms and potential for neuroplastic change have not been synthesized across neuroimaging modalities. This mechanistic review integrates evidence from electroencephalography (EEG), functional MRI (fMRI), and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to map how massage alters human brain activity acutely and over time and to identify signals of longitudinal adaptation. Materials and Methods: We conducted a scoping, mechanistic review informed by PRISMA/PRISMA-ScR pr

Functional and aesthetic oral rehabilitation after cancer treatment using dental prosthesis and hyaluronic acid injections: A case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Oral cavity cancers are highly invasive malignancies, typically treated with a combination of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Surgical intervention requires the removal of all affected tissues, including the mandibular basal bone. Reconstructive procedures may involve tissue and skin grafts, such as fibula free flaps in the case of mandibulectomy. These techniques aim to minimize scarring and restore basic oral functions. However, radiation therapy may result in fibrotic scarring of the connective tissues. This case report focuses on the integration of surgical, prosthetic, a

"Endoscopic-assisted, subperiosteal browlift bone fixation technique outcomes: a systematic review and meta-analysis".

BACKGROUND: The optimal central forehead fixation method after endoscopic-assisted, subperiosteal browlift is an ongoing clinical controversy. There are two general categories of central forehead bone fixation: permanent bone fixation (e.g., fixation implants, bone tunnels) and temporary bone fixation (e.g., removable, percutaneous titanium screws). A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to compare complication and revision surgery incidence rates using permanent versus temporary fixation after subperiosteal browlift for upper third facial rejuvenation. METHODS: PubMed and Embase
