Modified Osteotomies for Wing and Mini-Wing Genioplasty.

Patients with chin deficiency secondary to dentofacial deformity often present with aesthetic and functional complaints. Treatment of such deficiencies with conventional genioplasty may be limited when broader modification of the mandibular basilar contour is required. This retrospective case series reports the clinical and radiographic outcomes of 9 patients treated with wing (n = 8) or mini-wing (n = 1) genioplasty for anteroposterior and/or vertical chin deficiency, mandibular asymmetry, syndromic deformities, post-traumatic sequelae, or airway-related complaints. Wing osteotomy was indicat

Clinical Application of a Multistage Algorithm for Aesthetic and Functional Reconstruction in Post-Traumatic Craniofacial Sequelae.

BACKGROUND: Craniomaxillofacial trauma is a common occurrence in adults, often resulting from vehicle accidents, assaults, sports injuries, working accidents, and others. The primary goal of craniomaxillofacial trauma surgery is to restore function and aesthetics, while also supporting the patient's social reintegration. However, many patients develop post-traumatic complications and sequelae such as malocclusion, facial asymmetry, unsatisfactory aesthetic outcomes, pseudoarthrosis, airway disturbances, and nasal or ocular dysfunction. A multistage reconstruction approach involves sequential p

Emotion regulation and visual attention in body dysmorphic disorder: a multimodal study using EEG, GSR, and eye-tracking.

BACKGROUND: Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a psychiatric condition characterized by obsessive preoccupation with perceived physical flaws, often accompanied by emotional dysregulation and attentional biases. Despite increasing clinical recognition, the neurophysiological and attentional mechanisms underlying BDD remain poorly understood. METHODS: This study employed a multimodal experimental design to compare individuals with BDD (n = 27) and healthy controls (n = 27). Participants completed standardized psychometric assessments and were exposed to emotionally valenced facial and body-rela

Using facial morphology traits related to attention problems in children to identify prenatal exposure history.

Brain development and face morphology are related through underlying biological mechanisms, namely embryonic neuroectodermal processes. This study examined whether the facial parameters identified in children can help understand the neurodevelopmental impact of prenatal exposures on child behavior. We studied 9- to 10-year-old children of European descent from Generation R Study (N = 2,779) with three-dimensional face photographs. With an AI model of a 3D graph autoencoder, each facial shape was compressed into 200 traits representing facial morphology. We examined associations of traits with

Neural gender stereotype asymmetry in bidirectional word-face priming.

This study investigates the behavioral and neural correlates of implicit and automatic gender stereotyping at the intersection of language and face processing, focusing on the bidirectional flow of gender-stereotypical information and previously observed asymmetries in stereotype processing. We recorded response times (RTs) and Event-Related Potentials (ERPs) to a target face (male, female) preceded by stereotypically associated words (e.g., conducente "driver", badante "caregiver"), or to stereotypically associated target words preceded by a face (male, female). Participants performed a gende

Eyes don't lie: Unmasking fake faces with ocular clues.

The rapid evolution of generative models necessitates robust methods to distinguish synthesized faces from real ones. This work evaluates a set of ocular geometry features for detecting synthesized faces generated by both GAN-based models (StyleGAN2/3) and text-to-image diffusion models (SFHQ-T2I), under controlled (Chicago Face Database, CFD) and uncontrolled (FFHQ, CelebA-HQ) acquisition conditions. Facial landmarks were extracted using MediaPipe Face Mesh, followed by XGBoost-based classification in both pairwise and pooled settings, covering 3128 real and 3470 synthesized images. The resul

Hydrochemical redistribution in a stressed aquifer system: Decadal attenuation of salinity extremes and expansion of diffuse agricultural contamination across Mexico.

Groundwater chemistry in large aquifer systems is reshaped not only by gradual degradation but also by subtle reorganization of contaminant stress. We analyze a decade of federal monitoring data (2012-2021) to assess national-scale hydrochemical change in Mexican aquifers using a distribution-based contaminant hydrology framework that explicitly accounts for non-coincident sampling locations. We track shifts in concentration distributions, exceedance probabilities, hydrochemical facies and multivariate association patterns. We find that salinity extremes have retreated, but without commensurat

Minimally Invasive Suture-crossing Technique for Facial Contour Restoration Using Poly-l-lactic Acid/Polycaprolactone Aptos Threads.

BACKGROUND: Facial aging leads to progressive soft tissue descent, skin laxity, and loss of mandibular definition. Thread lifting has emerged as a minimally invasive approach to reposition and anchor tissues while stimulating collagen synthesis. This study presents a modified technique using Aptos Excellence Visage sutures with a strategic suture-crossing method to enhance cervicofacial contour. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed data from 22 participants who underwent the modified thread-lifting technique for cervicofacial rejuvenation. The procedure involved the insertion of 10 mult

Surgery First Bimaxillary Osteotomy for Marked Facial Asymmetry Developed After Aligner Treatment.

A 28-year-old woman with facial asymmetry after aligner treatment visited our hospital. She complained of an asymmetric gummy smile and a deviated mental area developed after clear aligner treatment. On CT examination, occlusal cant was found, leading to facial asymmetry. We made a clinical diagnosis of jaw deformity with an asymmetric face, and recommended her orthognathic surgery using wire orthodontics. She accepted jaw surgery; however, she refused wire orthodontic treatment. Therefore, we selected bimaxillary osteotomy with a surgical-first approach using her clear aligner to correct the

A Method for Locating the Summit of Zygoma and Radiographic Measurement of Zygoma in Patients With Hemifacial Microsomia.

BACKGROUND: To explore a method for locating the summit of zygoma (SOZ) for patients with hemifacial microsomia and to analyze the asymmetry of the zygomatic bone in patients with hemifacial microsomia. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted with consecutive patients diagnosed with hemifacial microsomia. A cylinder perpendicular to the horizontal plane was established, with its axis passing through the midpoint of the sella turcica, on 3D-reconstructed images. By adjusting the cylinder's radius, the SOZ was identified as the point where the zygomatic bone protrudes slightly above the cy

Reduction of zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures with elevator and modified wire and screw: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fractures can lead to significant facial asymmetry due to displacement of the zygomatic bone. Its management is challenging because of the complex 3D structure and difficult surgical access to the ZMC. This case report evaluates the combination of elevator and modified wire and screw technique to treat ZMC fractures displacement with facial asymmetry. CASE REPORTS: A 31-year-old male patient was referred to the emergency room with complaints of pain, swelling on the right face, and facial asymmetry after a motorcycle accident. Anamnesis revealed

Neural correlates of asymmetric switch costs during affective task switching.

Task switching is widely used to investigate cognitive control, typically revealing switch costs-greater performance costs in switch than in repetition trials. Previous research reported affective asymmetric switch costs, with higher costs when switching towards an affective task compared with a switch towards a neutral task. This asymmetry can be explained by the inhibition of the affective task, which enables the performance of the neutral task, leading to increased costs for a switch from the neutral toward the affective task. In Experiment 1, we examined whether the affective task content

The Impact of Septal Deviation on Eye Asymmetry: Implications for Preoperative Facial Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Unresolved facial asymmetry remains a common cause of postoperative dissatisfaction after rhinoplasty, and eyes are key determinants of asymmetric perception. Although the nose is considered the central pivot of facial development, the relationship between nasal septal deviation and ocular or orbital asymmetry has not been clearly defined. This study aimed to evaluate the association between septal deviation and vertical eye-level asymmetry using computed tomography (CT)-based skeletal analysis. METHODS: Fifty two patients undergoing primary rhinoplasty were analyzed retrospective
