Comparison of sliding genioplasty use between virtual surgical planning and model surgery in patients with facial asymmetry.

This retrospective comparative study evaluated whether the adoption of virtual surgical planning (VSP) was associated with changes in adjunctive sliding genioplasty use in patients undergoing bimaxillary orthognathic surgery for facial asymmetry. A total of 117 patients were classified into a model surgery (MS) group (n = 32) and a VSP group (n = 85). Sliding genioplasty frequency was compared between groups, and subgroup analysis was performed according to preoperative menton deviation. In patients with severe menton deviation (≥4 mm), postoperative transverse skeletal and soft-tissue symmetr

Bone-Anchored CT Angiography Framework for In Vivo Assessment of Zygomaticus Major Morphology.

Background: The zygomaticus major (ZMa) is a key mimetic muscle with reported anatomical variability, but in vivo descriptions based on routinely acquired imaging remain limited. Methods: This retrospective single-centre study evaluated whether clinically indicated head-and-neck CT angiography (CTA) can support a bone-anchored, consensus-based descriptive assessment of ZMa morphology. Seventy-five CTA examinations were analysed bilaterally, yielding 150 hemifaces from 42 males and 33 females. Multiplanar reconstructions were reviewed using skeletal landmarks. Results: ZMa morphology was catego

Concurrent resection and orthognathic surgery for the management of mandibular condyle osteoma: a case report and literature review.

Facial asymmetry is a common sequela of condylar osteoma and has a significant impact on patient's quality of life. In some cases, sole resection of the tumor and surrounding structures is insufficient to restore maxillofacial harmony, and incorporating additional surgical procedures, such as orthognathic surgery, might provide a more comprehensive solution. This paper reports the case of a 36-year-old woman who presented with pain on biting on the right side, accompanied by swelling over the right periauricular region. Clinical examination revealed facial asymmetry with a chin shift to the le

Bony venous malformations in facial bones: Diagnosis and treatment of improperly called cavernous hemangioma.

This case series and literature review introduces Bony Vascular Malformations (BVM) of facial bones as a well-defined entity to provide a more accurate reference to these often mislabeled vascular anomalies, aiming to standardize terminology, elucidate their clinical-radiological features and guide their management. This retrospective review analyzes 20 patients treated between 2017 and 2024, all affected by venous malformations involving facial bones. Facial BVMs are apparently rarer than spine or skull bony venous malformations, but they are often misdiagnosed as hemangiomas and, as such sta

Beyond Bifid and Trifid: CBCT Findings of a Pentafid Mandibular Condyle in a Patient With a History of Childhood Trauma: A Case Report.

The mandibular condyle may exhibit a variety of morphological variations, most commonly bifid and, less frequently, trifid and tetrafid configurations. Although these anomalies are often detected incidentally and remain asymptomatic, some patients may present with temporomandibular joint dysfunction, pain, restricted mandibular movements, or facial asymmetry. We report the clinical and radiographic findings of a 50-year-old female patient in whom an unusual five-lobed (pentafid) morphology of the right mandibular condyle was incidentally detected during routine radiographic examination. The pa

A case of oral lipoma: from stem to stern.

BACKGROUND: Lipomas are soft tissue tumors found mostly in adults between the fifth and seventh decades, and their exact cause remains unknown. Oral lipomas are rare compared to other body locations and are most often found in the buccal mucosa and buccal vestibule. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a non-tender oral lipoma in a 52-year-old female with a painless, soft, slowly evolving swelling causing facial asymmetry. We carried out, under local anesthesia, an intra-oral lipomectomy, and the histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of a lipoma. Postoperative control showed a dissipation

Venous malformations involving the buccal fat pad: anatomical extension patterns and management implications.

BACKGROUND: Venous malformations (VMs) involving the buccal fat pad (BFP) are uncommon lesions that may cause facial swelling and contour deformity. Although vascular malformations represent the most common pathology affecting the BFP, their anatomical extent, extension patterns, and implications for treatment planning remain poorly defined. This study assessed the imaging features and anatomical extension patterns of BFP VMs and summarized corresponding staged treatment strategies. METHODS: Consecutive patients with VMs involving the BFP treated at a tertiary referral center between 2015 and

Minimally Invasive Aesthetic Treatments for the Corrective Patient Archetype: Transforming Lives.

BACKGROUND: The definition of health encompasses mental, emotional, and social well-being, rather than simply the absence of disease. As a result, corrective aesthetic treatments are increasingly being viewed as an integral component of overall health rather than confined solely to the domain of aesthetics. In the realm of facial aesthetics, the corrective patient archetype is distinctly focused on rebalancing or proportioning facial features to improve confidence and self-perception. Minimally invasive treatments, such as botulinum toxin and hyaluronic acid (HA) gels, are known for their effi

Virtual Surgical Planning-Guided Correction of Hemifacial Microsomia With Inverted-L Osteotomy.

Hemifacial microsomia (HFM) produces facial asymmetry involving the skeleton and overlying soft tissues, and skeletal correction may leave residual soft-tissue deficiency. We report a 23-year-old woman with left HFM (Pruzansky-Kaban type IIb; OMENS-Plus O0M2E1N0S2), maxillary occlusal cant, and leftward chin deviation. Three-dimensional virtual surgical planning (VSP) was performed using patient-specific osteotomy guides and wafers. One-stage treatment comprised Le Fort I osteotomy, left mandibular inverted-L osteotomy with autogenous iliac interpositional grafting, right sagittal split ramus

Cross-Sectional study on cranial shape measurement values of 2,165 preterm infants in Beijing.

BACKGROUND: The incidence rate of postural cranial abnormality is high. They often accompany facial asymmetry, affecting the appearance and potentially even the development of the nervous system in affected children. To investigate the epidemiological characteristics of the detection rate of postural cranial abnormality in preterm infants, providing a basis for early diagnosis and intervention timing. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on cranial measurement data from 2,165 preterm infants who visited the Child Health Care Center of Peking University Third Hospital for the first tim

Simultaneous Orthognathic Surgery and Condylectomy for Active Unilateral Condylar Hyperplasia: Indications and Outcomes of a Single-Stage Protocol.

BACKGROUND: Active unilateral condylar hyperplasia (AUCH) leads to progressive facial asymmetry and occlusal imbalance and may coexist with preexisting skeletal discrepancies. In such cases, a single-stage approach combining condylectomy and orthognathic surgery can address both pathological growth and the associated dentofacial deformity. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to present a treatment protocol and surgical algorithm for simultaneous orthognathic surgery and condylectomy in subjects with AUCH and to evaluate clinical outcomes in a retrospective case series. Analysis of Craniofacial Microsomia and Facial Asymmetry: Approaches in Facial Feminization Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Comprehensive facial analysis among transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) individuals undergoing facial feminization surgery (FFS) has created new opportunities to investigate facial asymmetry in adults. Although craniofacial microsomia (CFM) is typically identified in infancy, milder forms may go unrecognized, leaving gaps in diagnosis and treatment. OBJECTIVES: The authors of this study examine facial asymmetry, including CFM, among TGD patients undergoing FFS and discuss appropriate surgical strategies. METHODS: Adults registered male at birth undergoing de novo FFS from 2020 t

Cephalic Alar Base Malposition: Recognition and Correction with an Advancement Flap.

BACKGROUND: Cephalic alar base malposition (CABM) represents an underrecognized cause of nasal base disharmony and is frequently misdiagnosed as alar rim retraction. In this condition, the alar base is vertically displaced in a cephalic direction, creating imbalance in the alar-columellar relationship and often exaggerating the appearance of nasal tip ptosis. This study describes a reproducible surgical technique using a full-thickness advancement flap to reposition the alar base inferiorly while preserving the natural contour of the alar-facial groove. METHODS: A retrospective study was perf

Quantitative Assessment of Facial Expression Asymmetry in Parkinson's Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Hypomimia, or reduced facial expressiveness, is a cardinal motor feature of Parkinson's disease (PD). Although limb motor symptoms in PD are characteristically asymmetric, whether facial hypomimia exhibits comparable asymmetry remains poorly understood. We investigated facial expression asymmetry in PD using AI-based computer vision and machine learning. METHODS: Videos of instructed emotional facial expressions were collected from 101 individuals with PD and 94 healthy controls (HCs) across two independent cohorts. Facial landmarks were extracted to compute region-specific facial

Evaluating ChatGPT's Reliability in Analyzing Facial Asymmetry: A Comparative Study With Human Evaluators Using Cross Sectional Static Images.

OBJECTIVE: Facial asymmetry assessment is often subjective and time intensive, thus we aim to evaluate reliability of ChatGPT in analyzing facial asymmetry compared to human raters. METHODS: Thirty patients with unilateral facial paralysis who underwent facial reanimation surgery were included in this study. Sixty static 2D frontal images (pre and postoperative) were obtained from our database. Facial asymmetry was assessed using the Sunnybrook resting symmetry scale and a 0-4 global asymmetry rating scale. Two human raters evaluated all images independently. Facial asymmetry in unicoronal craniosynostosis: automated three-dimensional quantification of surgical outcomes.

Craniosynostosis is the premature closure of one or more cranial sutures which may result in functional and aesthetic complications. Non-syndromic unicoronal craniosynostosis commonly leads to facial asymmetry. This study aimed to quantify changes in facial asymmetry before and after surgical treatment using an automated 3D technique. A retrospective study was performed including 32 patients treated at Radboud University Medical Center Nijmegen between 2011 and 2024. Pre- and postoperative three-dimensional facial photographs were analysed, and asymmetry was quantified using regional root-mean

Early findings of morphological changes in the temporomandibular joint after orthognathic surgery in mandibular prognathism with facial asymmetry.

This study was performed to investigate early morphological changes in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), after patients with mandibular prognathism with facial asymmetry (MPA) received orthognathic surgery. The morphological changes in the TMJ were analyzed on computed tomography multi-sectional reconstructed images first taken before preoperative orthodontic treatment and then again 6 months after orthognathic surgery, in 39 patients with MPA. A combination of Le Fort I osteotomy and bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) was performed in 22 patients and BSSO alone was performed in 17 pat

Accuracy of fiducial-based augmented reality in auricular reconstruction.

OBJECTIVES: Reconstruction with autologous costal cartilage remains the gold standard surgical treatment for total or partial ear reconstruction. The different auricular subunits are sculpted from costal cartilage and assembled. The assembly requires a particular skillset and training, including a thorough three-dimensional (3D) understanding of auricular anatomy. The correct positioning of the ear framework can be particularly difficult in patients with hemifacial microsomia because of facial asymmetry. We developed a digital workflow that can help the surgeon in the correct positioning of th

VectorLift: Anatomically Guided Thread-Lifting Technique With Reduced Pain and Downtime - Results from a Real-World Non-Randomized Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Thread lifting has emerged as a minimally invasive alternative to surgical facial rejuvenation, providing mechanical tissue repositioning with shorter recovery times. Advances in biomaterials and thread design have improved safety and lifting capacity; however, variability in clinical outcomes persists due to differences in vector design, thread type, tissue manipulation, and anesthesia techniques. These factors may influence complication rates, procedural tolerance, and postoperative downtime, contributing to ongoing concerns regarding the predictability and reproducibility of thr
