PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine effectiveness of a midliner positioning system (MPS, Tortle Midliner) for preventing dolichocephaly.
METHODS: This was a nonrandomized, prospective study of 30 premature infants (study cohort, SC) using an MPS compared with a retrospective study cohort (RSC) of 65 infants who received standard of care intervention.
RESULTS: RSC baseline cranial index (CI) of 80% and final CI of 77% significantly decreased over an average 5.5 weeks (P < .0001). The SC baseline CI and the final CI were both 79% over an average 5.7 weeks, indicating no signifi

BACKGROUND: Germline mutations of the PTEN gene are responsible for several PTEN hamartoma tumor syndromes. They are also implicated as a cause of macrocephaly and mild to severe developmental delay, regardless of the presence or absence of hamartomas in childhood. Nevertheless, because of limited information, the clinical features present during childhood in patients with a PTEN mutation are yet to be elucidated.
METHODS: PTEN mutations were investigated by multiplex targeted sequencing of genomic DNA from 33 children with increased head circumference (>+2 SD) and developmental delay. The cl

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Measuring head circumference (HC) in infants is an easy screening procedure with which to detect abnormalities in brain growth. It has been demonstrated that HC can predict total brain volume (TBV) in very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants. However, the correlation between HC and TBV was weaker than that observed in healthy term-born toddlers, suggesting that there are factors that influence the relationship between HC and TBV. The aim of this study was to identify the clinical risk factors that caused a deviation from the regression line obtained between HC and TBV.

BACKGROUND: Bilambdoid and sagittal synostosis (BLSS), also called "Mercedes Benz synostosis," is a multisutural craniosynostosis that has been described as a specific entity. However, this synostotic pattern can also be found in syndromic craniostenosis. To better define this entity we reviewed our experience with bilambdoid and sagittal synostosis.
METHODS: We searched our prospective database for cases of bilambdoid and sagittal synostosis among all types of craniosynostosis. Two groups were distinguished - patients with isolated BLSS and the group of syndromic craniostenosis for whom BLSS

The authors report on the assessment of an anthropogenic mummy of a young man from the Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo, Sicily, tentatively dated from the mid- to late 19th century AD. The mummy was investigated by full-body CT examination. CT images clearly showed aortic dissection classified as Stanford-A. Due to the relation of aortic dissection to inherited connective tissue diseases in young people, such as Marfan syndrome, conspicuous and pathological findings possibly indicating the presence of underlying Marfan syndrome were assessed. Several systemic features were scored that supported

TGF-β-related heritable connective tissue disorders are characterized by a similar pattern of cardiovascular defects, including aortic root dilatation, mitral valve prolapse, vascular aneurysms, and vascular dissections and exhibit incomplete penetrance and variable expressivity. Because of the phenotypic overlap of these disorders, panel-based genetic testing is frequently used to confirm the clinical findings. Unfortunately in many cases, variants of uncertain significance (VUSs) obscure the genetic diagnosis until more information becomes available. Here, we describe and characterize the fu

PURPOSE: Cerebrospinal fluid diversion via ventricular shunt is a common treatment for hydrocephalus. Change in cranial morphology associated with a sutural fusion has been termed shunt-related or induced craniosynostosis (SRC) or craniocerebral disproportion (CCD). We present a series of patients with SRC who underwent cranial vault remodeling (CVR) and our treatment algorithm.
METHODS: Thirteen patients were retrospectively reviewed who had SRC and CVR; 92% of patients had a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt placed for largely intraventricular hemorrhage of prematurity (69% of patients) at a

Sotos syndrome (SoS) is characterized by overgrowth of prenatal onset, learning disability, and characteristic facial appearance; it is usually due to haploinsufficiency of NSD1 gene at chromosome 5q35. An Italian child was born at 37 weeks of gestation (weight 2,910 g, 25th-50th centiles; length 50 cm, 75th centile; head circumference 36 cm, 97th centile) showing cryptorchidism on the right side, hypertelorism, dolichocephaly, broad and prominent forehead, and narrow jaw; the pregnancy was worsened by maternal preeclampsia and gestational diabetes, and his mother had a previous history of fou

INSTRUCTION: Craniosynostosis is a human disorder characterized by the premature fusing of the cranial sutures in infants. Point mutations in hotspot genes such as FGFRs are the well-recognized causes of syndromic craniosynostosis, but chromosomal abbreviations may also play an important role in developing this disease. Here, we report the case in China of a 2-year-boy dolichocephaly craniosynostosis. Karyotyping by both G-bind staining and array-based DNA hybridization identified microduplications on Chromosomes 8p11.22 q12.1 and 16q11.2 q21, but none of the known pathogenic mutations was det

Sensenbrenner syndrome (cranioectodermal dysplasia, CED) is a very rare autosomal recessive ciliopathy. Cranioectodermal dysplasia is characterized by craniofacial, skeletal, and ectodermal abnormalities. About 50 patients have been described to date. Sensenbrenner syndrome belongs to a group of ciliary chondrodysplasias and is a genetically heterogeneous disorder. Mutations in five genes: IFT122, WDR35, IFT43, WDR19, and IFT52 have been associated with CED. All known genes encode proteins that are part of the intraflagellar transport complex, which plays an important role in the assembly and

3-M syndrome (OMIM #273750, #612921, and #614205) is a rare autosomal recessive growth disorder that is characterized by pre- and postnatal growth retardation, normal intelligence, and characteristic faces. This syndrome also has characteristic radiological features, such as slender long bones and tall vertebral bodies. Three genes, cullin 7 (CUL7), coiled-coil domain containing 8, and obscurin-like 1 are genetic candidates of 3-M syndrome. Patients with 3-M syndrome have a characteristic facial appearance, including a triangular face, frontal bossing, an anteverted nose, dolichocephaly, and a

BACKGROUND: Several patients with ocular dystopia and craniofacial differences have been found to have orbital dysplasia and a frontal bone defect. This deformity is characteristically different from differential diagnoses of encephalocele, sphenoid dysplasia, craniofacial dysostoses, or atypical clefting.
METHODS: The authors retrospectively reviewed the craniofacial registries of two pediatric centers for patients presenting with ocular dystopia or orbitofrontal anomalies between 2000 and 2014. The features and treatment of these patients were analyzed.
RESULTS: Four patients with congenit

7q11.23 duplication syndrome is a disease caused by duplication of a region of chromosome 7 comprising 26 genes. The first case described in the literature was reported by Somerville et al. in 2005, who described a patient with dolichocephaly, high and narrow forehead, long eyelashes, high and wide nose, short philtrum, high arched palate, dental malocclusion, retrognathia, and severe language delay. We report the case of a Colombian patient with 7q11.23 duplication by comparative genomic hybridization techniques, and classical clinical findings, this being the first reported case in Colombia

OBJECTIVES: The Homo erectus-like cranium from Buia (UA 31) was found in the Eritrean Danakil depression and dated to 1 million years. Its outer morphology displays archaic traits, as well as distinctive and derived characters. The present study provides the description and metric comparison of its endocranial anatomy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: UA 31 was originally filled by a diffuse concretion. Following its removal and cleaning, the endocast (995 cc) was reconstructed after physical molding and digital scan. Its morphology is here compared with specimens belonging to different human taxa, tak

Primary delayed onset craniosynostosis is a rarely reported phenomenon. The unique case of a 2-year-old boy who had computed tomography (CT) scans performed 20 months apart demonstrating the post-gestational development of sagittal suture craniosynostosis is presented. The otherwise healthy male initially presented to the emergency department at age 7 months with soft tissue swelling over his left parietal region secondary to a fall. A CT scan revealed a possible left parietal skull fracture without intracranial pathology and patent cranial sutures with a normocephalic calvarial configuration.

Objective The purpose of this study was to determine when dolichocephaly develops in preterm infants, to establish factors that contribute to its development, and to determine its association with adverse motor outcomes. Study Design This study was a retrospective review of data collected from preterm infants born at < 32 weeks' gestation. The cranial index was measured by a physical therapist (PT) at three time points during hospitalization. Demographic data, neonatal morbidities, and motor outcomes at outpatient follow-up were collected. Results Overall, 54% of infants developed dolichocepha

Introduction. Bloom syndrome (BS) is an inherited disorder due to mutation in BLM gene. The diagnosis of BS should be considered in patients with growth retardation of prenatal onset, a photosensitive rash in a butterfly distribution over the cheeks, and an increased risk of cancer at an early age. Clinical manifestations also include short stature, dolichocephaly, prominent ears, micrognathia, malar hypoplasia and a high-pitched voice, immunodeficiency, type II diabetes, and hypogonadism associated with male infertility and female subfertility. The aim of this report is to describe case of pa

Patients with KCNK9 imprinting syndrome demonstrate congenital hypotonia, variable cleft palate, normal MRIs and EEGs, delayed development, and feeding problems. Associated facial dysmorphic features include dolichocephaly with bitemporal narrowing, short philtrum, tented upper lip, palatal abnormalities, and small mandible. This disorder maps to chromosomal region 8q24, and it is caused by a specific missense mutation 770G>A in exon 2, replacing glycine at position 236 by arginine (G236R) in the maternal copy of KCNK9 within this locus. KCNK9 (also called TASK3) encodes a member of the two po

Partial trisomy of chromosome 5 was first described by Lejeune et al. in 1964 on the short arm (12). The vast majority of the partial trisomy 5 cases include 5p duplications; however we reported a small supernumerary marker chromosome. General symptoms include developmental delay, mental retardation, seizures, respiratory difficulties, congenital heart defects, abdominal muscle hypoplasia and dysmorphic features such as macrocephaly, enlarged anterior fontanelle, dolichocephaly, upslanting palpebral fissures, epicanthal folds, hypertelorism, abnormal ears, midface hypoplasia, short nose, broad
