Pectus excavatum can rarely result in clinically significant right ventricular (RV) compression, leading to impaired diastolic filling, reduced stroke volume, and secondary biventricular dysfunction involving both the right and left ventricles. We report a 19-year-old male who presented with progressive exertional dyspnea and was found to have severe pectus excavatum with a Haller index of 5.8 on cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and 3.6 on computed tomography. Multimodal cardiac evaluation demonstrated focal RV compression, moderate RV systolic dysfunction on cardiac MRI with a right ventric

BACKGROUND: Pectus excavatum (PE) is the most common congenital deformity of the anterior chest wall. Although minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum (MIRPE) is widely accepted as the standard surgical approach, the relationship between patient age and postoperative safety remains incompletely defined. This study aimed to examine age-related differences in postoperative effectiveness and complication profiles following MIRPE.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 719 patients with congenital PE who underwent complete correction using the MIRPE at a single University Medical

Whole breast radiotherapy in adjuvant breast cancer (BC) treatment has been commonly delivered in supine positioning for more than 50 years. Its widespread use is related to the broad availability of simple and common breast board immobilization devices, which exploit the natural recumbent position of the body with arms above the head, the good match with linac tables and well-established set up procedures. However, in scenarios like painful arm discomfort in patients with post-surgery arm or arthritic limitation, unfavorable chest geometry like pectus excavatum (PE), large and pendulous breas

Background: Pectus excavatum (PE) is the most common anterior chest wall deformity in children and adolescents. It may lead to postural adaptations of the trunk and spine and can influence the distribution of the center of gravity. Methods: A total of 35 patients with PE, with a Haller index < 3.25, aged 5-17 years, followed a structured exercise program including postural correction exercises, thoracic mobility exercises, breathing retraining, and trunk extensor strengthening for three months after proper instruction by a specialist. Patients were assessed before and after the intervention. P

BACKGROUND: The Nuss procedure, also known as minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum (MIRPE), is recognised to cause high levels of post-operative pain, requiring regional techniques and inpatient and outpatient opioid use. Intercostal nerve cryoablation during MIRPE is a new technique that results in extended analgesia for up to 3-6 months after surgery. This multisite comparative analysis is the first to present the use of cryoanalgesia in Australasia.
METHODS: Retrospective chart reviews were conducted of 17 consecutive patients who underwent cryoanalgesia for MIRPE and 17 patients

BACKGROUND: Robotic mitral valve repair (MVr) offers superior visualization and dexterity, potentially overcoming challenges in severe thoracic deformity such as pectus excavatum. This study compared surgical outcomes after MVr in patients with and without thoracic deformity and assessed the impact of thoracic deformity on operative times in robotic MVr.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We reviewed 359 patients undergoing robotic MVr for degenerative mitral regurgitation (2018-2022). Patients with a Haller index ≥3.25 categorized as the deformity group (Group D; n=35), and those with a Haller index <3.25

BACKGROUND: Despite significant advances in surgical techniques for pectus excavatum (PE), the evolution of research priorities and clinical foci in this field remains poorly defined. This study aims to map the thematic evolution of PE research using bibliometric methods, thereby guiding future clinical research directions.
METHODS: Publications on PE from 2005 to 2025 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). Bibliometric analyses, including co-authorship, co-citation, keyword co-occurrence, burst detection, and trend analyses, were conducted to evaluate research produc

BACKGROUND: Severe pectus excavatum is an uncommon cause of hemodynamic compromise in adults and may present with unexplained tachycardia when preload filling is impaired by cardiac compression.
CASE SUMMARY: A 65-year-old woman with long-standing palpitations presented with sinus tachycardia despite high-dose beta-blockade. Electrocardiogram and ambulatory monitoring showed sinus rhythm with marked heart rate variability. Right heart catheterization revealed low filling pressures, with a mean right atrial pressure of 1 mm Hg and preserved cardiac output. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance sho

BACKGROUND: The Nuss procedure is commonly used to correct pectus excavatum, with cryoanalgesia (CA) and thoracic epidural analgesia (TEA) as pain management options. While a prior meta-analysis showed shorter hospital stays with CA, publication of recent studies warrants a more comprehensive evaluation of outcomes not previously reported.
METHODS: A literature search identified studies comparing CA and TEA in Nuss procedures. Pooled odds ratios, mean differences (MDs), and standardized mean differences (SMDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using RevMan 8.13.0, with a sub

Pectus excavatum (PE) is the most common congenital anterior chest wall anomaly, often requiring surgical correction due to both functional and aesthetic concerns. Gender-affirming surgery has seen a significant increase in recent decades, with mastectomy being the primary procedure for transgender men. For transmasculine patients with PE seeking chest masculinization, the possibility of addressing both conditions in a single surgery has not been well explored. We report the first known case of a 33-year-old transgender patient with PE undergoing a combined procedure of masculinization top sur

INTRODUCTION: The evaluation of patients with pectus excavatum (PE) has focused more on the pediatric population who may undergo surgical correction of sternal defects. Limited data in the medical literature exists on the evaluation of adults with PE. This study evaluated the type of evaluation conducted, clinical findings, and outcomes in a military population.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review of active duty military personnel with a diagnosis of pectus excavatum was conducted. Clinical data included pulmonary function testing, chest imaging, cardiac imaging, and formal ex

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative cryoanalgesia has been widely adopted to reduce postoperative pain, opioid use, and length of stay after minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum (MIRPE). However, its use in children younger than 12 years remains off-label, and outcomes in this age group are poorly characterized. This study evaluated postoperative outcomes after cryoanalgesia during MIRPE in carefully selected children younger than 12 years.
METHODS: We performed a single-center retrospective chart review of patients younger than 12 years who underwent MIRPE with thoracoscopic transthoracic cr

BACKGROUND: During genetic screening for radioulnar synostosis (RUS), we identified FBN2 variants in individuals who also exhibited pectus excavatum (PE). This study aimed to investigate the association between FBN2 variants and non-syndromic paediatric PE.
METHODS: We phenotyped an Fbn2 knockout mouse model. A cohort of 290 paediatric PE probands and their families was recruited. Comprehensive analyses included karyotyping, copy number variation arrays, exome sequencing (ES), Sanger sequencing validation and systematic clinical re-evaluation using the Callewaert scoring system.
