Molecular basis of mucopolysaccharidosis IVA in a large cohort: genotype-phenotype correlations and reporting of 12 novel GALNS variants.

Mucopolysaccharidosis type IVA (MPS IVA) is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder caused by deficient activity of N-acetylgalactosamine-6-sulfatase (GALNS). In this single-center study, we analyzed the clinical and genetic characteristics of 82 pediatric MPS IVA patients, including 68 severe, 12 intermediate, and 2 mild cases. The most common clinical manifestations were pectus carinatum (72%), short stature (56%), and genu valgum (45%). All patients showed markedly reduced GALNS activity, although no significant difference was observed across phenotypic subgroups. Genetic analysis

Psychological Impact of Congenital Chest Wall Deformities Among Adolescents and Young Adults.

Progression of pectus excavatum and carinatum coincides with adolescence, a critical period for identity and self-esteem development. While clinical decision-making and insurance coverage have historically emphasized anatomic severity and cardiopulmonary functioning, increasing evidence suggests that psychosocial burden and quality of life (QoL) impairment represent central components of disease impact. A narrative review was conducted using the PubMed database to synthesize the current literature on the psychological impact of these deformities in adolescents and young adults, including body

The role of age and severity of deformity in the choice of treatment for pectus carinatum: a comparison of braces and surgical correction.

BACKGROUND: Pectus carinatum (PC) is a congenital chest wall deformity that can lead to aesthetic, functional and psychosocial problems, especially in adolescence. The choice of treatment usually depends on clinical factors such as the severity of the deformity, the stiffness of the chest wall and the age of the patient. This study aimed to compare the clinical outcomes of conservative and surgical treatment modalities for PC and to examine the associations among age, deformity severity and treatment selection. METHODS: A retrospective review of 118 patients treated between 2009 and 2022 was

Determinants of Successful Pectus Carinatum Bracing: A Narrative Review.

Pectus carinatum (PC) is a chest wall deformity characterized by the anterior projection of the sternum that typically manifests in adolescence and may result in notable psychosocial morbidity despite insubstantial physiological signs. Historically considered less common than pectus excavatum, recent trends suggest that PC may be underdiagnosed, with increasing recognition and referrals to specialized pectus clinics. The main objective of this review is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the role of bracing, particularly the dynamic compression system, in the non-surgical management o

Dynamic Compression System Bracing as a Treatment Option for Chondromanubrial Pectus Carinatum.

IntroductionChondromanubrial pectus carinatum (PC) is a rare type of pectus deformity in which there is protrusion of the manubrium and superior costal cartilage. Studies have shown that orthotic bracing is successful in correcting chondrogladiolar PC, but surgery has been the primary treatment for the chondromanubrial subtype. Due to the rarity of this type of PC, we aimed to describe our experience and outcomes with the dynamic compression system (DCS) bracing in these patients.MethodsThis is retrospective single center review of all patients with chondromanubrial PC treated with DCS from 20

Modified sandwich technique for asymmetric pectus carinatum and excavatum-carinatum complex: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Asymmetric pectus carinatum (PC) and excavatum-carinatum complex (ECC) represent challenging chest wall deformities in which conventional bracing or single-direction minimally invasive techniques may fail to achieve satisfactory correction. The modified sandwich technique allows multidirectional remodeling of the anterior chest wall using combined internal and external bar placement; however, technical aspects such as bar number, length, placement sequence, and fixation remain insufficiently defined. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 55 patients who underwent repa

Minimally invasive care for pectus carinatum.

PURPOSE: Pectus Carinatum (PC) is a chest wall difference characterised by protrusion of the anterior chest wall and is commonly treated by Dynamic Compression Bracing (DCB). Whereas bracing programs are traditionally characterized by direct physician and health ally involvement at regular follow-up appointments, we hypothesize that PC can be successfully treated without in-person clinical care. METHODS: With REB approval, we prospectively enrolled all patients with PC treated with DCB from 2018 to 2024 at a single center. These patients were assessed by a single provider and offered DCB from
