Calcifying fibrous tumor (CFT) is a benign tumor entity which can present in a variety of different sites. Till date, eight cases with a mediastinal manifestation have been published in literature. Surgical removal is the treatment of choice for this often incidentally detected tumor. Surgery of thoracic CFT may be challenging due to its localization within the mediastinum. A 10-year old boy with a right-sided thoracic pectus carinatum-like deformity was referred for further evaluation, incidentally, revealing a mediastinal mass in computed tomography (CT). Laboratory results were all within n

Patients with achondroplasia and other causes of dwarfism suffer from increased rates of cardiovascular disease relative to the remainder of the population. Few studies have examined these patients when undergoing cardiac surgery or percutaneous intervention. This systematic review examines the literature to determine outcomes following cardiac intervention in this unique population. An electronic search was performed in the English literature to identify all reports of achondroplasia, dwarfism, and cardiac intervention. Of the 5,274 articles identified, 14 articles with 14 cases met inclusion

PURPOSE: This study reports the incidence, severity, and predictors of musculoskeletal deformities (MD), including scoliosis and chest wall anomalies, following thoracic procedures in children.
METHODS: Children younger than 14 years who had thoracic surgery between 1997 and 2012 and had no other predispositions to MD, underwent longitudinal follow-ups with dedicated musculoskeletal examination performed in an esophageal atresia, orthopedic, or research clinic. Incidence of MD was calculated, and logistic regression methods were used to determine independent predictors, including sex, gestati

Micro and Martsolf syndromes are rare clinically and genetically overlapping disorders caused by mutations in RAB3GAP1, RAB3GAP2, RAB18 and TBC1D20 genes. We describe 34 new patients, 27 with Micro and seven with Martsolf. Patients presented with the characteristic clinical manifestations of the two syndromes, including postnatal microcephaly, congenital cataracts, microphthalmia, optic atrophy, spasticity and intellectual disability. Brain imaging showed in the majority of cases polymicrogyria, thin corpus callosum, cortical atrophy, and white matter dysmyelination. Unusual additional finding

BACKGROUND: Mucopolysaccharidosis IVA (MPS IVA) is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disease due to N-acetylgalactosamine-6-sulfatase (GALNS) deficiency. It results in accumulation of the glycosaminoglycans, keratan sulfate and chondroitin-6-sulfate, leading to skeletal and other systemic impairments. Data on MPS IVA in Asian populations are scarce.
METHODS: This is a multicentre descriptive case series of 21 patients comprising all MPS IVA patients in Malaysia. Mutational analysis was performed by PCR and Sanger sequencing of the GALNS gene in 17 patients.
RESULTS: The patients (15 f

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a genetic disorder characterized by bone fragility and blue sclerae, which are mainly caused by a mutation of the COL1A1 or COL1A2 genes that encode type I procollagen. Mutations in the splice site of type I collagen genes are one of the mutations that cause OI and usually lead to a mild or moderate OI phenotype. A heterozygous A to G point mutation in intron 9 at the -2 position of the splice receptor site of COL1A1 was identified in a family with type I or IV OI. Three affected individuals in four generations of one family all presented with several clinical s

Awareness of pectus carinatum has increased among the medical community over the last several decades, as innovative options for nonsurgical treatments have become more widely known. Management alternatives have shifted from open resective to minimally invasive strategies, and finally, to reshaping the chest using both surgical and non-surgical modalities. We aim to review the evolution of the diagnosis and treatment of pectus carinatum up to its current management.

Amish Nemaline Myopathy is a severe form of nemaline myopathy associated to mutation in TNNT1 gene, firstly reported among the Old Order Amish. Here we report two Italian siblings who manifested, by the age of 7 months, progressive and severe muscle weakness and wasting, respiratory insufficiency, pectus carinatum deformity and failure to thrive. Muscle biopsy was consistent with nemaline myopathy and novel homozygous missense mutation in TNNT1 was found. Our cases expand the mutational spectrum of TNNT1, confirm the invariable peculiar clinical phenotype also outside the Amish population, and

Today, in our country, as well as throughout the world, there is no single approach to the tactics of managing patients with deformations of the anterior chest wall. These patients constitute a large and heterogeneous group. The team acquired great experience in treating children with pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum, as well as a unique experience in the surgical treatment of pediatric thoracic outlet syndrome and sternum clefts. Now in the world there are a lot of surgical methods used for the correction of congenital deformities of the chest wall, however, the majority of them are extr

A photographic clinical role has been realized in our institution in the care of patients with Pectus Carinatum. A series of clinical photographs along with 3D imaging are now presented by our photographers to each patient in clinic to demonstrate changes over time in the size and shape of their chest wall defects associated with this condition. This interaction has increased patient compliance for treatment and subsequently reinforces the relevance and importance of clinical photographers in patient care.

Pectus excavatum (PE) and pectus carinatum (PC) are the most common congenital chest wall anomalies. Current research suggests that PE and PC may result from overgrowth of the sternocostal cartilages. This can produce a deformation that displaces the sternum inward as in PE or outward as in PC. The etiology, clinical presentation, evaluation, and management of PE and PC are reviewed. Varied clinical presentations, cardiopulmonary effects, and psychosocial aspects are described.

Pectus carinatum is a congenital chest-wall deformity with a prevalence of 0.3-0.7%. This chest-wall deformity can lead to functional, cosmetic and psychosocial problems. For many years, the only available treatment was an invasive surgical procedure. A less-invasive treatment, namely external compression of the sternum with a brace, showed disappointing results due to discomfort, a high percentage of skin complications and low compliance. The introduction of the dynamic compression brace has meant that the pressure of sternal compression can be measured and adjusted, which has improved comfor

There has been a growing interest in the nonoperative treatment of chest wall deformities over the last few decades; with the advent of external compressive orthotics, similar outcomes have been reported compared with surgical intervention. There have been fewer major complications reported with dynamic compression bracing on the chest wall; however, the Achilles heel of this approach still lies with treatment tolerability and compliance. A Medline literature search was undertaken to evaluate the evidence concerning the techniques, modifications, and outcomes associated with external compressi

INTRODUCTION: While body image disturbances and quality of life in persons with pectus excavatum (PE) have been well documented, very little has been done to systematically measure and document the same in patients with pectus carinatum (PC). Because of this, the current study aimed to develop and validate an instrument to assess body image related quality of life in patients with PC and their parents.
METHOD: Participants: Two waves of data collection took place. The development phase enrolled 78 PC patients and 76 matched parents. The validation phase enrolled 50 PC patients and 50 parents.

We presented a case of acute anterior myocardial infarction caused by left anterior descending artery occlusion in a patient with pectus carinatum. The electrocardiogram (ECG) on admission showed counterclockwise rotation and T wave inversion only in leads V1-V2. Computed tomography revealed that this patient with pectus carinatum had greater septal angle. Electrocardiographic counterclockwise rotation due to greater septal angle in pectus carinatum led to atypical ECG findings of acute myocardial infraction.

To date, standard methods for assessing the severity of chest wall deformities are mostly linked to X-ray and CT scans. However, the use of radiations limits their use when there is a need to monitor the development of the pathology over time. This is particularly important when dealing with patients suffering from Pectus Carinatum, whose treatment mainly requires the use of corrective braces and a systematic supervision. In recent years, the assessment of severity of chest deformities by means of radiation-free devices became increasingly popular but not yet adopted as standard clinical pract

Introduction: Children with pectus carinatum (PC) are particularly vulnerable to psychosocial effects of poor body image, even though they may not experience physical symptoms. Nonoperative treatment with orthotic bracing is effective in PC correction. We describe our experience with dynamic compression bracing (DCB) for PC patients and their satisfaction with bracing. Materials and Methods: Prospective institutional data of patients undergoing DCB from July 2011 to June 2018 were reviewed and analyzed for those who entered the retainer mode after correction, defined by a correction pressure o

BACKGROUND: Brachydactyly, a developmental disorder, refers to shortening of hands/feet due to small or missing metacarpals/metatarsals and/or phalanges. Isolated brachydactyly type E (BDE), characterized by shortened metacarpals and/or metatarsals, consists in a small proportion of patients with Homeobox D13 (HOXD13) or parathyroid-hormone-like hormone (PTHLH) mutations. BDE is often accompanied by other anomalies that are parts of many congenital syndromes. In this study, we investigated a Chinese family presented with BDE combined with pectus carinatum and short stature.
METHODS: A four-ge
