Patient and healthcare professional satisfaction with 3D imaging new technologies for medical purposes.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Advances in the field of three-dimensional scanning have enabled the development of instruments that can generate images that are useful in medicine. On the other hand, satisfaction studies are becoming increasingly important in the evaluation of quality in healthcare. We aimed to evaluate patients' and professionals' satisfaction with the use of a three-dimensional scanner applied to chest wall malformations. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the framework of a study to validate the results of three-dimensional scanning technology, we developed questionnaires to measure sat

Left congenital diaphragmatic hernia-associated musculoskeletal deformities.

AIM: With the advancement in the treatment strategies of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), there is an increase in the survival rates. This fact leads to an increase in the morbidity and extrapulmonary complications in the long term such as failure to thrive, hernia recurrence, neurodevelopmental delay, gastrointestinal problems, and musculoskeletal anomalies. Herein, we aim to investigate the association between the long-term musculoskeletal complications in CDH patients regarding the defect size, repair type, and perinatal parameters. METHODS: After Institutional Review Board approval

Initial reduction of flexible pectus carinatum with outpatient manipulation as an adjunct to external compressive bracing: technique and early outcomes at 12 weeks.

INTRODUCTION: Our aim was to assess whether initial reduction with outpatient soft-tissue manipulation of flexible pectus carinatum deformity prior to external compressive bracing was associated with improved compliance and patient satisfaction compared to reported outcomes of external brace with progressive tightening. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From our observational cohort of 227 patients, 177 were felt appropriate to undergo initial reduction and soft tissue manipulation prior to immediate custom fitting of an external compressive brace. These patients then followed a prescriptive schedule of

Trichorhinophalangeal syndrome as a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge for paediatric endocrinologists.

Trichorhinophalangeal syndrome (TRPS) is rare genetic disorder with autosomal dominant inheritance. The TRPS1 gene is located on the long arm of the eighth chromosome (8q24.12). The phenotype is variable and presents a wide clinical spectrum. Most cases are characterised by thin, sparse scalp hair, distinctive facial dysmorphism, and various skeletal abnormalities, especially of the hands and feet. Characteristic facial features may include a "pear-shaped" nose, micrognathia, dental anomalies, prominent ears, elongated philtrum, and thin upper vermillion border. In most cases, affected individ

Prevalence of pectus excavatum (PE), pectus carinatum (PC), tracheal hypoplasia, thoracic spine deformities and lateral heart displacement in thoracic radiographs of screw-tailed brachycephalic dogs.

Pectus excavatum, thoracic spine deformities, tracheal hypoplasia and lateral heart displacement are frequently described in brachycephalic dog breeds. Pectus carinatum is described sporadically, although the authors' observations demonstrate that it may occur in certain brachycephalic dog breeds. It was hypothesised that dogs of screw-tailed brachycephalic breeds carry a greater risk of these anomalies than normal-tailed brachycephalic breeds, and that there could a relation between the presence of pectus excavatum or pectus carinatum and thoracic spine deformities, tracheal hypoplasia and la

Subarachnoid Block a Safe Choice for Cesarean Section in Neurofibromatosis Patient with Severe Kyphoscoliosis.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal-dominant neuroectodermal hereditary disorder, in which spinal skeletal deformities are one of the manifestations. Pectus carinatum, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, and kyphoscoliosis can be seen with this genetic disorder which can lead to cardiorespiratory system problems and can cause difficulty in airway management. We present the anesthetic management of a NF1 patient with a sharp thoracolumbar dystrophic kyphoscoliosis who have been posted for emergency cesarean section as a result of fetal distress. The operation was successfully perfor

Preliminary Evaluation of a Web-Based Psychological Screening Tool in Adolescents Undergoing Minimally Invasive Pectus Surgery: Single-Center Observational Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative anxiety and depression are predominant risk factors for increased postoperative pain. Thoracic wall deformities in adolescents often cause low self-esteem, which contributes to psychological concerns. Several studies have suggested a relationship between preoperative mental health support and enhanced recovery after surgery. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the validity of screening questionnaires concerning psychological trait and state characteristics via a patient-specific online platform. METHODS: Patients scheduled for elective pectus surgery between June 2017

TNNT1 nemaline myopathy: natural history and therapeutic frontier.

We describe the natural history of 'Amish' nemaline myopathy (ANM), an infantile-onset, lethal disease linked to a pathogenic c.505G>T nonsense mutation of TNNT1, which encodes the slow fiber isoform of troponin T (TNNT1; a.k.a. TnT). The TNNT1 c.505G>T allele has a carrier frequency of 6.5% within Old Order Amish settlements of North America. We collected natural history data for 106 ANM patients born between 1923 and 2017. Over the last two decades, mean age of molecular diagnosis was 16 ± 27 days. TNNT1 c.505G>T homozygotes were normal weight at birth but failed to thrive by age 9 months. P

Mechanistic insights into the cellular effects of a novel FN1 variant associated with a spondylometaphyseal dysplasia.

Spondylometaphyseal dysplasia (SMD) is characterized by developmental changes in long bones and vertebrae. It has large phenotypic diversity and multiple genetic causes, including a recent link to novel variants in the extracellular matrix (ECM) protein fibronectin (FN), a regulator of ECM assembly and key link between the ECM and proper cell function. We identified a patient with a unique SMD, similar to SMD with corner fractures. The patient has been followed over 19 years and presents with short stature, genu varum, kyphoscoliosis, and pectus carinatum. Radiography shows metaphyseal changes

Embolic stroke, left atrial myxoma and gigantism in a patient with Carney complex with additional features suggestive of Marfan syndrome.

A 16-year-old boy presented to the emergency department with a sudden weakness on the right side of the body and was diagnosed as having embolic stroke. Later on, the patient was diagnosed as having Carney complex (CNC). The neurological complication might be caused by left atrial myxoma as a feature of CNC. Surprisingly, the patient showed some additional features such as positive wrist and thumb signs, pectus carinatum deformity and plain flat feet, suggestive of Marfan syndrome. This case demonstrated that both of these syndromes might coexist in the same patient, suggesting that proper dia

Outcomes, quality of life, and long-term results after pectus repair from around the globe.

The procedure introduced by Donald Nuss in 1997 at the American Pediatric Surgical Association meeting has now been adopted by pediatric, thoracic, and plastic surgeons around the globe. Since its introduction, the Nuss procedure has been the subject of intense scrutiny. More than 20 years since the original publication, medical centers from around the world have reported their experience with the procedure and robust evidence now supports its safety and efficacy. Additionally, in collaboration with psychologists in Norfolk, a methodology was devised to measure the psychosocial as well as the

[Automatic diagnosis of pectus carinatum for children based on the improved Haller index].

Pectus carinatum (PC) is one of the most common chest wall anomalies, which is characterized by the protrusion of the anterior chest wall including the sternum and adjacent costal cartilages. Mildly patients suffer from mental problems such as self-abasement, while severely suffering patients are disturbed by significant cardiopulmonary symptoms. The traditional Haller index, which is widely used clinically to evaluate the severity of PC, is deficient in diagnosis efficiency and classification. This paper presents an improved Haller index algorithm for PC: first, the contour of the patient che

Feasibility of using computer simulation to predict the postoperative outcome of the minimally invasive Nuss procedure: Simulation prediction vs. postoperative clinical observation.

The Nuss procedure is the most minimally invasive and commonly used surgical correction for pectus excavatum (PE) by using a prebent pectus bar to elevate the deformed chest wall. However, there are some complications associated with this procedure such as postoperative pain as well as surgical uncertainties because of human judgment. It is therefore important to understand the biomechanical effect of the pectus bar on PE thoraces undergoing an operation to alleviate the postoperative pain as well as to improve surgical outcome. The current study incorporated the finite element method (FEM) to

Minimally invasive repair of pectus carinatum by modification of the Abramson technique.

INTRODUCTION: The minimally invasive pectus carinatum surgery described by Abramson has been performed in many centers. We modified the "sub-muscular tunnel creation" part of the original Abramson technique. AIM: To compare the operative time between the original Abramson technique and a lightly modified approach. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective review of 84 patients who underwent minimally invasive repair of pectus carinatum deformity between July 2008 and November 2017 was performed. We applied two different techniques, the original Abramson technique and the modified technique. Sixt
