Bracing for Success: Long-term Patient-reported Outcomes of Bracing Therapy for Pectus Carinatum.

INTRODUCTION: Pectus carinatum (PC) is typically managed by compressive bracing therapy during adolescence. This study assesses the long-term patient-reported outcomes of bracing therapy on adolescents diagnosed with PC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We identified 867 patients diagnosed with PC and treated at our institution between 2013 and 2023. Patients and/or guardians were contacted via email and phone to complete a survey. The 17-question survey evaluated self-reported brace usage, cosmetic satisfaction, and quality of life outcomes. RESULTS: Ninety-eight patients completed the survey; 81.6%

Compressive bracing for pectus carinatum following congenital heart disease surgery in children: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Pectus carinatum (PC) can develop as a secondary deformity following median sternotomy for congenital heart disease repair in children. While compressive bracing is an established first-line treatment for primary pectus carinatum, its safety and effectiveness in post-cardiac surgery patients remain uninvestigated. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 54 pediatric patients with PC secondary to congenital heart disease surgery, treated with custom-fitted compressive bracing at a single center (March 2019 to December 2020). The primary outcome was anteroposterior (A

Dynamic Compression System versus Self-Adjustable Bracing for Pectus Carinatum: Clinical Outcomes and Cost Comparison.

BACKGROUND: Bracing is the preferred treatment for pectus carinatum. However, few studies have compared outcomes of different bracing methods. We tested the hypothesis that the type of brace has no effect on outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective study of children who underwent bracing during a 10-year period (2011-2021) at a multidisciplinary chest wall anomaly center was conducted. The characteristics and outcomes of patients treated with a pressure-guided orthotist-adjusted brace (FMF Dynamic Compression System [DCS]) were compared with those treated with a simpler, less costly, self-adjustabl

Non-operative treatment of pectus carinatum: Fifteen years of outcomes and predictors from a national paediatric service.

BACKGROUND: Non-surgical bracing is the primary treatment for pectus carinatum, yet large cohorts with objectively measured adherence are limited. This study evaluates 15 years of bracing outcomes and identifies factors associated with successful correction. METHODS: This retrospective observational cohort study included patients <20 years with chondrogladiolar pectus carinatum treated with orthotic bracing between 2010 and 2025 within the Scottish National Chest Wall Service. Chest wall flexibility was assessed subjectively prior to 2019 and objectively thereafter using a calibrated force ga

Pycnodysostosis With Papilledema and Isolated Low Parathyroid Hormone Levels in an Eight-Year-Old Girl: A Genetically Confirmed Case Report.

Pycnodysostosis is a rare autosomal recessive skeletal dysplasia resulting from pathogenic variants in the CTSK gene, which encodes cathepsin K, a lysosomal cysteine protease expressed in osteoclasts. Deficiency of this enzyme leads to defective bone resorption and generalized osteosclerosis. We report an 8-year-old girl, the firstborn of a third-degree consanguineous marriage, who presented with poor height and weight gain since birth and delayed developmental milestones, including independent walking at 2 years of age. Physical examination revealed proportionate short stature with microcepha

Extended KAFR: a kinematic-adaptive paradigm for the efficient analysis of surgical video.

Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a chronic and potentially sight-threatening disease. Topical corticosteroids (Cs) seem to be the only effective treatment for this condition, although severe side effects may occur owing to their prolonged use. More recently, cyclosporine (Cyc) eye drops have been reported as a valid alternative, but so far such treatment has only been successfully experimented for a short time and in small numbers of patients. The aim of our study is to evaluate the long term safety and efficacy of topical cyclosporine eye drops in children suffering from VKC. Over a perio
