INTRODUCTION: The number of patients with congenital lung malformations (CLM) is increasing because of prenatal diagnosis. We investigated the changes in the patient backgrounds and the surgical approach for lobectomy, evaluating the surgical outcomes of thoracoscopic surgery.
METHODS: We enrolled 50 CLM patients who underwent lobectomy between 1995 and 2024. Patients were divided into three 10-year groups to evaluate the trends in patient backgrounds. We also divided them into the thoracotomy and thoracoscopy groups to compare the patient backgrounds and surgical outcomes.

Atrial septal defects (ASDs) are among the most common congenital heart defects diagnosed in adulthood, with percutaneous device closure being the standard treatment for suitable secundum ASDs. However, the presence of anomalous coronary artery anatomy, particularly a high-risk interarterial course, may complicate procedural planning due to potential myocardial ischemia and sudden cardiac death. Single-ostium coronary artery anomalies are exceptionally rare, and their coexistence with a secundum ASD is even more uncommon, providing distinct diagnostic and treatment issues. We report the case o

Pectus is the most common congenital chest wall deformity, with pectus excavatum being the most prevalent type characterized by a sunken sternum. It has been proven that in severe cases this anomaly can result in cardiopulmonary compromise affecting patients' daily activity and ability to exercise. Despite the latest research, the deformity may still be viewed by some as a cosmetic issue that does not necessitate treatment. Since primary care physicians are often the first to evaluate these patients, a thorough understanding and comprehensive treatment approach for pectus is needed. Patients w

Airway management in neonates with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) presents extreme challenges due to craniofacial abnormalities, cervical rigidity, limited mouth opening, and restrictive chest wall mechanics. These patients are at increased risk of failed intubation and perioperative respiratory complications, as airway trauma may rapidly develop, causing airway edema and compromising oxygenation. Early recognition and individualized airway planning are essential to avoid repeated traumatic airway manipulation and its associated complications. In our case, a full-term male neonate wi

Pectus excavatum (PE) is the most common congenital chest wall deformity, accounting for 90% of cases, and may predispose patients to hemodynamic compromise due to cardiac compression. Such events during spinal surgery, however, are rarely reported. In the widely used genupectoral prone position for spine surgeries, the patient lies prone with the torso supported and the legs flexed, thereby reducing abdominal compression, improving venous drainage, and reducing bleeding. However, the support provided by the thorax in this position may cause significant mediastinal compression in the presence

BACKGROUND: Straight Back Syndrome (SBS) is a congenital condition characterized by loss of normal thoracic kyphosis and chest narrowing, which can cause cardiac compression. Although linked to cardiovascular abnormalities, its relationship with atrial arrhythmia remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association between SBS and non-pulmonary vein (PV)-related atrial tachyarrhythmias (ATAs) in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF).
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 222 consecutive patients (mean age, 65.8 ± 11.3 years) who underwent initial AF ablation. Following PV isolatio

Dextrocardia with situs inversus is an uncommon congenital disorder in which the heart and other organs in the chest and abdomen are reversed. Although it rarely causes symptoms, it can be linked to heart or systemic disorders and is challenging to diagnose due to its unique architecture. The present report describes the case of a 27-year-old man who presented with sudden breathing problems. A physical examination revealed no heartbeat on the left side and odd cardiac noises. Further electrocardiogram tests revealed classic symptoms of dextrocardia, including right axis deviation and inverted

INTRODUCTION: Conjoined twinning represents a rare and complex congenital anomaly arising from incomplete embryonic division after the 13th day of fertilization. The condition occurs in approximately 1 in 50,000–200,000 live births, most commonly among females. Successful perioperative management requires multidisciplinary planning and precise anesthetic coordination to address unique physiological challenges, including potential cross-circulation and shared organ systems. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the anesthetic management of six-hour-old male conjoined twins joined from the mid-chest to t

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary hypoplasia is a rare congenital lung disorder characterized by the incomplete development of lung tissue. This condition can be classified as primary or secondary to other congenital anomalies, with primary pulmonary hypoplasia being considerably rarer than the secondary form. Severe cases often manifest as respiratory failure in the immediate newborn period. While secondary pulmonary hypoplasia is often antenatally detected, primary cases-such as ours-may evade prenatal imaging, presenting as refractory neonatal respiratory distress. Secondary causes, such as oligohydram

INTRODUCTION: Critical congenital heart disease (CHD) is associated with neurodevelopmental disorders, recognised as the most common long-term morbidity in affected children. In critical CHD, that is, CHD requiring cardiac surgery within the first 3 months of life, 30%-50% of children have lower developmental scores. Therefore, early identification of at-risk infants is crucial, yet there is no scientifically evaluated care programme in France. This study aims to evaluate early neurodevelopmental status in infants with prenatally diagnosed critical CHD and to determine how intrinsic susceptibi

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital foregut malformations, usually asymptomatic in early life. Gastric bronchogenic cysts (GBCs) are exceedingly uncommon and often pose diagnostic challenges due to nonspecific symptoms and inconclusive imaging. Misdiagnosis is common, as GBCs can mimic solid tumors or other cystic lesions.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 53-year-old asymptomatic man was found to have an incidental gastric mass on abdominal CT, revealing a 4.0 × 2.1 cm non-enhancing lesion along the lesser curvature. Gastroscopy was unremarkable. He reported no symptoms su

IMPORTANCE: Selection of patients with a bicuspid aortic valve and aortopathy for prophylactic aortic surgery remains challenging. In thoracic aortopathy, aortic medial elastin fiber fragmentation initially leads to microcalcification but later declines with progressive loss of elastin content and reduced structural integrity.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether aortic microcalcification detected using fluorine F 18-labeled [18F]-sodium fluoride positron emission tomography (PET) is associated with future aortic diameter expansion.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This prospective longitudinal

Agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) is a congenital malformation most commonly identified in prenatal or early childhood imaging, with adult diagnoses being relatively rare. We present the case of a 62-year-old man with a history of intellectual disability who was incidentally found to have complete ACC during evaluation for dizziness and chest discomfort. Initial noncontrast computed tomography (CT) of the brain demonstrated ventricular enlargement concerning for hydrocephalus, prompting further evaluation. Subsequent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) clarified the diagnosis, revealing class

AIM: To compare perioperative and long-term outcomes of lobectomy versus lung-sparing resection in children undergoing surgery for congenital pulmonary airway malformation (CPAM).
METHODS: A retrospective single-center study was conducted including children who underwent primary surgical resection for postnatally confirmed CPAM between 2005 and 2024. Patients with other congenital lung lesions, bilateral disease, syndromic conditions, or incomplete data were excluded. Perioperative variables, postoperative outcomes, redo surgery, and chest wall anomalies were compared between lobectomy and lu

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is an increasingly recognized cause of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in young women, yet long-term comparisons with atherosclerotic AMI are limited. We compared outcomes in women aged 18-55 years with these two conditions.
METHODS: Using the TriNetX research network, we conducted a retrospective cohort study of women aged 18-55 years with SCAD or atherosclerotic myocardial infaction(AMI). Cohorts were balanced by 1:1 propensity score matching, and outcomes assessed at 30 days, 1 year, and 3 years. Sensitivity analyses used age-only

BACKGROUND: Patent foramen ovale (PFO) and pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs) are congenital vascular abnormalities that can lead to right-to-left shunting, potentially causing paradoxical embolism.
CASE SUMMARY: We describe a case of a 39-year-old woman who presented with syncope and left-sided facial numbness; her brain imaging confirmed a subacute lacunar infarct in the left thalamus. A transthoracic echocardiogram showed a PFO with moderate to severe right-to-left shunting. The patient underwent successful PFO closure. Postprocedurally, she developed transient hypotension. Comp
