The process of 3D printing has found its way into orthopedics and trauma surgery, particularly for complex interventions on the elbow and forearm. By producing patient-specific implants and surgical templates misalignments, fractures and deformities can be precisely corrected. It could be shown that this technology increases the surgical accuracy, shortens recovery times and reduces postoperative complications. Compared to conventional implants 3D-printed implants provide the advantage of individual adaptation to the anatomical situation of the patient. This is particularly relevant in complex

BACKGROUND: Pediatric polydactyly is a common congenital disorder of the hand and foot that affects the development and psychology of children. It can be classified into postaxial polydactyly, preaxial polydactyly and central polydactyly. Among the three types, central polydactyly is the rarest, resulting in limited literature pertaining to the management of this condition. We present a rare case of central polydactyly of the left foot with nine toes.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 10-month-old female child was brought to us with left congenital central mirror foot and ill-fitting shoe concerns. The fo

OBJECTIVE: Emanuel syndrome is a rare inherited chromosomal disorder characterized by the presence of a derivative chromosome 22 resulting from a translocation between chromosomes 11 and 22. Since the number of reported cases in Asian is still small, we mean to present 2 more cases diagnosed prenatally and review similar case reports to better understand the syndrome when abnormal findings were found prenatally.
CASE REPORT: Two cases of Emanual syndrome were found where one draws attention due to abnormal serum marker and thickened nuchal translucency, and the other was found when prenatal u

Effective orthopedic care/rehabilitation for pediatric upper limb deficiencies (ULDs) requires understanding how function and prosthetic control progress as the child develops. Psychometrically sound outcome measures are imperative. This systematic review critically appraised the instruments available for assessing upper limb function among children with ULDs. PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and Scopus were searched. Eligible studies evaluated instruments' validity, reliability, and/or responsiveness and included children under 18 years. Following PRISMA guidelines, multiple reviewers independently sc

Clinical registries that allow longitudinal patient follow-up with standardized outcome measures are useful tools for collecting data that can be used to inform patients and clinicians about the aetiology, natural history and response of various conditions to treatment. Registries are being employed across the world for children with congenital upper limb differences where the benefits of accumulated data for this heterogenous group of significant conditions are proving invaluable including the Congenital Upper Limb Difference registry in the United States, the Congenital Upper Limb Anomaly No

This study evaluated the implementation of PROMIS® tools within the Australian Hand Difference Register to assess functional and psychosocial outcomes in children with congenital upper limb differences (CULDs). One-hundred and thirty-six children out of 212 invited completed the questionnaires between May 2021 and July 2023. Six PROMIS® tools covering physical and psychosocial domains were evaluated at four ages: 5 (n = 40), 8 (n = 26), 11 (n = 32), 14 (n = 25) and 17 years (n = 13). Significant reductions in upper extremity function compared with the reference population were confirmed, excep

The aim of this study was to explore the pattern of eye dominance in individuals with congenital transverse absences between humeral and metacarpal levels. Eighty-one patients were included with a median age of 25 years (interquartile range 15 to 35; range 6-71). The left-right laterality of limb absence was 27:54. Eighty-one per cent of left-hand-dominant (absent right hand) patients were left-eye dominant (compared with 57% of normal left-handers); 83% of right-hand-dominant (absent left hand) patients were right-eye dominant (compared with 66% normal right-handers). Patients were more likel

INTRODUCTION: Radial club hand is a rare congenital malformation with functional and aesthetic repercussions.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present the case of a 6-year-old boy with bilateral hand deformity, associated with hypoplasia of the thenar muscles and aplasia of the radius (Bayne stage IV). After bilateral ulnar radialisation, recovery was favorable, with stability of the hand axis and a fine grip allowing writing. At 18 months postoperatively, the child was able to integrate into school without assistance.
DISCUSSION: Radial clubhands are rare malformations, often treated late in Madaga

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between the introduction of the fetal anomaly scans in the Netherlands and termination of pregnancy (TOP) in cases of prenatally detected upper limb anomalies.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study among prenatally detected upper limb anomalies between 2000 and 2023. Anomalies were categorized as reduction defects, syndactyly, or polydactyly, and classified as isolated or non-isolated. We analyzed TOP rates across three periods (2000-2006, 2007-August 2021, September 2021-2023), including an interrupted time series (ITS) analysis to assess the impac

Split-hand/foot malformation (SHFM), also known as ectrodactyly (ED), is a group of congenital limb malformations characterized by partial or complete aplasia of the central rays of the hand and/or foot, with variable fusion of the remaining digits. These conditions can severely impact the functions of the limbs, with an incidence ranging from 1/90 000 to 1/8 500, and account for 8% to 17% of all limb malformations. The typical clinical manifestation include median clefts of the hands/feet, syndactyly, and hypoplasia or aplasia of phalanges and metacarpal/metatarsal bones. SHFM are genetically

Brachydactyly (BD) is a common congenital deformity of the hands and feet resulting from shortening, absence, or fusion of phalanges and metatarsals. Clinically, BD is categorized into isolated, complex and syndromic forms based on the presence of co-morbid congenital manifestations. The diagnosis of BD primarily depends on the examination of the appearance, along with the anteroposterior (AP) X-ray of hands and feet. Bell classified the isolated BD into five types based on the location and number of involved bones. Some BD can be further subdivided into several subtypes according to the sever

Flexible flatfoot is common among school-age children and significantly affects walking efficiency, balance stability, and joint-movement coordination in children. The demands on the skeletal structure and muscle function are increased during running; however, the impact of a flexible flatfoot on children's running capabilities is unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of flexible flatfoot on the running function of school-age children. Participants with flat feet (n = 28) and typical feet (n = 27) ran on a flat surface at their chosen maximum pace. At the same time, the k

BACKGROUND: Heterozygous TP63 mutations cause a spectrum of disorders including split-hand/foot malformation 4 (SHFM4) and ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-cleft lip/palate syndrome 3 (EEC3). While some SHFM4 mutations concurrently induce EEC3-like phenotypes (designated SHFM4/EEC3 mutations), their prevalence and distribution-particularly those near the p63 C-terminus-remain poorly characterized.
METHOD: A multigenerational Chinese family with an isolated form of SHFM was investigated. Genetic analysis included real-time quantitative PCR and Sanger sequencing. Disease mutation databases and

Weaver syndrome is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder that encompasses macrocephaly, tall stature, obesity, brain anomalies, intellectual disability, and increased susceptibility to cancer. This dominant monogenic disorder is caused by germline variants in enhancer of zeste 2 polycomb repressive complex 2 subunit (EZH2), a key epigenetic writer. Unfortunately, there are no effective treatments for Weaver syndrome. However, preclinical results support the potential for therapeutic gains, despite the prenatal onset. Thus, for the first time, we tested whether CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing strategies
