Pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is an uncommon disease principally affecting women during childbearing years and eventually leading to progressive respiratory failure. Lung transplantation is a viable option for patients with end-stage disease. LAM-related complications remain common, but recurrence of LAM following allograft transplantation is rare. We present a 25-year-old woman who presented with progressive dyspnea five years after bilateral lung transplantation for end-stage LAM. Histological examination of transbronchial lung biopsy sample confirmed recurrent LAM. We changed cyc

Hydatid disease is a parasitic infection caused by Echinococcus granulosus. Cardiac involvement is rare especially without liver and lungs tissue involvement. We describe a 12-year-old male patient referred to Mofid Children's Hospital, Tehran, Iran in Jul 2020 due to chronic pericardial effusion and suspected tuberculosis infection from Afghanistan. Echocardiography revealed a cystic lesion in the interventricular septum. Thoracic and abdominal computed tomography showed no similar cystic lesion in the lungs and liver. The patient underwent open-heart surgery for cystectomy and medical treatm

Inhalable microparticle-based drug delivery platforms are being investigated extensively for Tuberculosis (TB) treatment as they offer efficient deposition in lungs and improved pharmacokinetics of the encapsulated cargo. However, the effect of physical parameters of microcarriers on interaction with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infected mammalian cells is underexplored. In this study, we report that Mtb-infected macrophages are highly phagocytic and microparticle surface charge plays a major role in particle internalization by infected cells. Microparticles of different sizes (0.5-2 μm) w

Introduction: Necrotizing sarcoid granulomatosis (NSG) is a very rare disease of unknown etiology characterized by sarcoid-like granulomas, vasculitis and necrosis in pulmonary and extrapulmonary localizations. Case report: We describe a case of a 34-year-old Caucasian male with fever, pleural pain, and nodular pulmonary opacities on chest radiograph. Histological examination of the lung tissue confirmed NSG. Diagnostically, infectious causes, vasculitis, and malignancy were excluded. A tendency to partial regression was observed, without the need for corticosteroid treatment. Conclusion: NSG

Pulmonary mucormycosis is a relatively rare pulmonary fungal disease, which is difficult to diagnose early and lacks effective treatment. It is seen in patients with hematological malignancies, diabetes mellitus, and immunocompromised states. The diagnosis depends primarily on the detection of fungi in lung tissue. Here, we present a case of a 52-year-old male who has type 2 diabetes mellitus and a past history of treated pulmonary tuberculosis. Clinical diagnosis is difficult in pulmonary mucormycosis, and early diagnosis is needed for this life-threatening infection. Histopathological examin

INTRODUCTION: Adenopathies are a frequent cause of recourse in internal medicine. When histological analysis reveals the presence of granuloma, multiple infectious or non-infectious etiologies are considered. If diagnoses of lymphoma, sarcoidosis or tuberculosis are easily mentioned, tularemia should also be considered in the differential diagnosis.
OBSERVATION: A 54-year-old patient had a fever at the evening with night sweats and a cough resistant to two lines of antibiotics. A thoraco-abdomino-pelvic CT scan revealed hilar and mediastinal adenopathies that appeared hypermetabolic with PET-

BACKGROUND: S-1 plus leucovorin and oxaliplatin showed promising efficacy for treatment of advanced gastric cancer in a randomised phase 2 study. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of oral TAS-118 (S-1 plus leucovorin) and oxaliplatin versus S-1 plus cisplatin in patients with advanced gastric cancer.
METHODS: We did a randomised, open-label, phase 3 trial in 62 centres across Japan and South Korea. Patients aged 20 years or older, with a histologically confirmed advanced gastric cancer with negative or unknown HER2 status, with Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status

OBJECTIVE: Xpert MTB/RIF is recommended to detect pulmonary tuberculosis; however, there is insufficient data on its utility for bone samples. This study aimed to assess the accuracy of Xpert MTB/RIF compared with conventional histopathology in diagnosing spinal tuberculosis (STB) based on bone specimens in high burden settings.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Totally, 128 suspected STB participants were enrolled into this study. The bone specimens were obtained through puncture or operation for histological and Xpert MTB/RIF analyses, so as to compare their accuracy in diagnosing STB by the composite

Successful treatment of tuberculosis (TB) requires antibiotics to reach their intended point of action, i.e., necrotizing granulomas in the lung. MALDI mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) is able to visualize the distribution of antibiotics in tissue, but resolving the small histological structures in mice, which are most commonly used in preclinical trials, requires high spatial resolution. We developed a MALDI MSI method to image antibiotics in the mouse lung with high mass resolution (240k @ m/z 200 fwhm) and high spatial resolution (10 μm pixel size). A crucial step was to develop a cryosectio

OBJECTIVES: The molecular profiles and prognosis of anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) fusion and resectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remain unclear. This study aimed to explore the distribution of ALK fusion variants and prognostic factors in patients with surgically resected NSCLC.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Among the 93 ALK positive surgical patients screened by immunohistochemistry (IHC) or real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), 63 patients were confirmed as ALK rearrangement by next-generation sequencing (NGS), including 55 cases of stage I-III and 8 cases of stage IV. BACKGROUND: The efficacy of mesnchymal stem cells (MSCs) to treat the necrotic tissue of salivary glands (SGs) has yet investigated.
OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to investigate the potential capacity of MSCs to restore the function and regenerate the necrotic submandiular gland in the rat animal model.
METHODS: Twenty-one Sprague-Dawley rats were provided from a breeding colony and randomly divided into three groups including the positive control or induced SG atrophy without treatment, the treatment group or induced SG atrophy with MSCs isolated transplantation and the negative contr

INTRODUCTION: In metropolitan France, nearly 20 new cases of leprosy are diagnosed each year. The incidence of tuberculosis in France is 8/100,000 inhabitants and there are very few accounts of association of these two mycobacteria. Herein we report a case of co-infection with borderline tuberculoid (BT) leprosy and disseminated tuberculosis diagnosed in metropolitan France.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A male subject presented with diffuse painless infiltrated erythematous plaques. The biopsy revealed perisudoral and perineural lymphohistiocytic epithelioid cell granuloma as well as acid-alcohol-fa

INTRODUCTION: Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) is a well-established diagnostic tool for lung cancer, sarcoidosis, and suspected metastatic extra-thoracic malignancy (ETM). Patients with primary ETM often have hypermetabolic mediastinal/hilar lymph node enlargement in the PET-scan done for initial staging or post treatment followup. We aimed to determine the diagnostic performance of EBUS-TBNA and the relationship between PET-SUV values and diagnosis of malignancy metastasis in patients with ETM.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Results of EBUS-TBNA in ETM pa

Anton Ghon is well known in the field of childhood tuberculosis, and the tuberculosis primary focus and complex are frequently called the Ghon focus and complex; this is largely the result of the wide publication of the English translation of his monograph "Der primäre Lungenherd bei der Tuberkulose der Kinder." Ghon's studies are frequently quoted, but precise details of his monograph are neglected, his results often misquoted, and his later publications virtually unknown. This review highlights aspects of Ghon's anatomical pathology studies in children and adults not necessarily dying of tub

UNLABELLED: Pulmonary tuberculosis manifesting as a mass lesion, thus, mimicking a lung carcinoma is an unusual radiographic presentation of tuberculosis (TB). The common radiologic patterns and clinical presentations are well known and documented. We report two cases of pulmonary tuberculosis with a neoplastic appearance on chest imaging diagnosed histologically. A 21 - year old female with cough, weight loss, anorexia and an unremarkable physical examination. Chest radiography showed a right apical mass suggestive of lung cancer. Histology of the lesion revealed parenchymal pulmonary tubercu

Thyroid tuberculosis is a rare disease. Its incidence is low even in countries where prevalence of pulmonary tuberculosis is high (0.1-0.4%). In literature, there are only a few cases which were diagnosed as thyroid tuberculosis. It can be explained by a high resistance of the thyroid gland to infectious processes. However, the prevalence of tuberculosis has increased worldwide and thyroid involvement can be a primary manifestation of the disease. The incidence of extrapulmonary tuberculosis has been showing a progressive increase in the recent years(Barnes and Weatherstone, 1979). The most fr

BACKGROUND: Compared with global numbers, Australia has enjoyed relatively good tuberculosis control over the past 30 years, with an annual incidence of 5.7 per 100 000 population. Thanks to its unique geography and proximity to high-burden countries, such as Papua New Guinea (PNG), Far North Queensland (FNQ) has previously been shown to have higher rates of tuberculosis compared with both the state and national average.
AIMS: To document tuberculosis epidemiology in FNQ compared to two previous audits of the region.
METHODS: Retrospective clinical audit of all cases of tuberculosis reported

BACKGROUND: CCNY, a novel cyclin family member, plays an increasingly important role in the progression of tumor invasion and metastasis, including lung cancer. However, the clinical significance of CCNY in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients is unknown.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We prepared CCNY monoclonal antibodies, validated specific peptides by a peptide array, and established a double-antibody sandwich ELISA detection method. Then, we measured CCNY levels in 100 NSCLC patients and 50 healthy controls. A blinded validation was subsequently performed in 399 NSCLC patients and 150 heal

BACKGROUND/AIM: The analysis of prognostic factors is important to identify determinants of disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) in resected non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We examined baseline characteristics associated with DFS and OS among 757 patients with resected, histologically proven, MAGE-A3-positive Stage IB-IIIA NSCLC assigned to placebo in the MAGRIT study (NCT00480025). We explored characteristics of NSCLC that could predict DFS and OS using Cox regression models.
RESULTS: The multivariate analysis showed that lower nodal stage, the pre

Although chronic airflow limitation (CAL) is an important long-term consequence of tuberculosis (TB), little is known about the disease process. We present what we believe to be the first case of histologically confirmed residual TB-associated obstructive pulmonary disease (TOPD) in a 23-year-old non-smoking man who developed severe CAL after one episode of TB, with no other plausible risk factors. Lung biopsies identified residual post-TB pathology affecting the small airways and vessels throughout his lung; this has not been reported previously. These findings strengthen the argument that TO
