Three new species of Jainus (Monogenoidea: Dactylogyridae) from the gills of Triportheus angulatus (Characiformes: Triportheidae) collected in the Peruvian Amazonia.

Three new species of Jainus Mizelle, Kritzky & Crane, 1968, are described parasitizing the gill filaments of Triportheus angulatus (Spix & Agassiz) (Characiformes: Triportheidae), an omnivorous fish endemic to the Amazon River basin. Jainus iquitensis n. sp. is characterized by the morphology of the vagina, which is bell-shaped, with a canal as a sclerotized tube and the morphology of hook pair VII, which in the new species presents an inflated base, a characteristic not observed in other congeners. Jainus loretoensis n. sp. is unique among Jainus species due to the morphology of its Y-shaped

Synergistic involvement of the NZF domains of the LUBAC accessory subunits HOIL-1L and SHARPIN in the regulation of LUBAC function.

The linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex (LUBAC) plays crucial roles in NF-κB signaling and protection against cell death by generating linear ubiquitin chains. Its accessory subunits, HOIL-1L and SHARPIN, regulate LUBAC function by binding to ubiquitin chains via their Npl4 zinc finger (NZF) domains. However, the synergistic effects of the two NZF domains on LUBAC function remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate that the ubiquitin-binding activity of the two NZF domains cooperatively regulates LUBAC functions. Simultaneous loss of the ubiquitin-binding activity of the NZF domains profoundly i

Biomechanical evolutionary advantage of flexor pollicis longus accessory head and topographical association with neurovascular structures.

The human upper limb has undergone various evolutionary myologic changes, accompanied by corresponding modifications in the anatomical course of neurovascular structures. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the emergence of the accessory head of the flexor pollicis longus (AHFPL) muscle as a beneficial biomechanical evolutionary development and its topographical relationship with adjacent neurovascular structures. In this pursuit to understand this phenomenon, dissections were conducted on sixty-two upper limbs from thirty-one cadavers. We found a strong positive correlation between the lengt

A Complex Case of Bilateral Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in a Patient With Gout: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common nerve entrapment condition of the upper extremity, primarily caused by compression of the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. While various factors can lead to this condition, the accumulation of gouty tophi in the flexor tendons is a rare cause. This case involves a 57-year-old manual laborer who presented with progressively worsening symptoms in both hands, including numbness, pain, and muscle weakness, which were more severe in his right hand. He had a 20-year history of gout, managed with medication. On examinati

An unusual configuration of two anomalies in the extensor digitorum profundus complex in a human.

The extensor digitorum profundus complex underwent degeneration of the ulnar segments during primate adaptation and evolution. This process resulted in the preservation of only the extensor pollicis longus and extensor indicis in some apes, including humans. Consequently, anatomical variations within the digitorum profundus complex in modern humans have been well-documented, with detailed reports on their frequency and patterns in previous studies. Here, we report an unusual arrangement involving two anomalies in the extensor digitorum profundus complex, identified in a 66-year-old Japanese ma

Accessory Flexor Carpi Ulnaris Muscle in Humans: A Rare Anatomical Case with Clinical Considerations.

Anatomical variations of the forearm flexor muscles are occasionally encountered. Though usually observed incidentally during autopsies or imaging studies, they may at times cause concern due to associated clinical symptoms. This report presents a case of unilateral accessory flexor carpi ulnaris (AFCU) muscle observed in a human male cadaver aged 78 years. During routine cadaveric dissection, an anomalous AFCU muscle was observed in the left forearm of a human male cadaver aged 78 years. Standard institutional guidelines pertaining to the use of human cadaver for teaching and research were fo

An accessory head of the extensor indicis: a rare case report.

PURPOSE: A deep knowledge of the variations of the posterior forearm musculature is crucial for assessing and diagnosing conditions in this region. Extensor indicis (EI) is one of the muscles in this region, which exhibits diverse anatomical variations. This report documents an extremely unusual form of the EI with an accessory head on the dorsum of the hand. METHODS: During routine dissection, an extremely rare presentation of the EI was found in the left forearm of a 94-year-old female cadaver. RESULTS: This unusual EI consisted of two muscle bellies. The traditional belly originated from

Congenital three generation wide familial non-syndromic polydactyly.

Polydactyly is typically observed as isolated and sporadic occurrences, although familial cases do exist, albeit with lower frequency, manifesting in various inheritance patterns. In around 30% of polydactyly cases, there exists a familial history, suggesting the probable involvement of a single gene. Given its potential for hereditary transmission, thorough investigation of the patients' parents, first-degree relatives, grandparents, and even great-grandparents for similar disorders becomes imperative. In our clinic, we conducted an analysis focusing on patients presenting with foot polydacty

Smile incision and reverse shotgun approach in distal interphalangeal joint arthrodesis.

BACKGROUND: Arthrodesis serves as the traditional therapeutic approach for advanced distal interphalangeal joint (DIPJ) arthritis. However, the conventional technique may prove insufficient when the excision of pronounced volar and lateral spurs is required. To address this, we innovated the 'smile incision with reverse shotgun approach'. This method enhances joint exposure and yields superior cosmetic results by extending the transverse skin incision over the DIPJ and cleaving the accessory collateral ligament, thereby improving access to the volar and lateral joint margins. This article meti

Lower trapezius transfer to infraspinatus in cases of sequelae of obstetric brachial plexus injury.

BACKGROUND: Deficient shoulder function is a common and exhausting issue in children with obstetric brachial plexus injuries. Even with functioning elbow, wrist, and fingers, upper limb function is markedly disabled by limited shoulder abduction external rotation. Lower trapezius transfer carries many advantages; simple and safe technique, same line of pull as donor; reliable nerve supply (extraplexal from spinal accessory nerve), and not acting on rotation of the shoulder, mostly it will not adversely affect internal rotation range after the transfer. This study aims to evaluate the role of i

Feasibility of the abductor pollicis longus hemitendon transfer for thumb opposition: An anatomical study.

INTRODUCTION: The abductor pollicis longus (APL) presents two muscle bellies and multiple accessory tendons available for transfer, amongst these an accessory tendon inserting on the thenar aponeurosis (APLTh). Edgerton described an opponensplasty using the whole APL tendon, but its results were limited due to the short size of the donor tendon. HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study is to assess the feasibility of transferring the APLTh for thumb opposition. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eleven cadaver upper limbs were dissected to assess the presence of the two heads of the APL as well as their mai

Insights into the structure-function relationship of the NorQ/NorD chaperones from Paracoccus denitrificans reveal shared principles of interacting MoxR AAA+/VWA domain proteins.

BACKGROUND: NorQ, a member of the MoxR-class of AAA+ ATPases, and NorD, a protein containing a Von Willebrand Factor Type A (VWA) domain, are essential for non-heme iron (FeB) cofactor insertion into cytochrome c-dependent nitric oxide reductase (cNOR). cNOR catalyzes NO reduction, a key step of bacterial denitrification. This work aimed at elucidating the specific mechanism of NorQD-catalyzed FeB insertion, and the general mechanism of the MoxR/VWA interacting protein families. RESULTS: We show that NorQ-catalyzed ATP hydrolysis, an intact VWA domain in NorD, and specific surface carboxylate

Unleashed Actin Assembly in Capping Protein-Deficient B16-F1 Cells Enables Identification of Multiple Factors Contributing to Filopodium Formation.

BACKGROUND: Filopodia are dynamic, finger-like actin-filament bundles that overcome membrane tension by forces generated through actin polymerization at their tips to allow extension of these structures a few microns beyond the cell periphery. Actin assembly of these protrusions is regulated by accessory proteins including heterodimeric capping protein (CP) or Ena/VASP actin polymerases to either terminate or promote filament growth. Accordingly, the depletion of CP in B16-F1 melanoma cells was previously shown to cause an explosive formation of filopodia. In Ena/VASP-deficient cells, CP deple

Electrophoretic Assembly of Antibody-Antigen Complexes Facilitates 1000 Times Improvement in the Limit of Detection of Serological Paper-Based Assay.

Serological assays detect the presence of specific antibodies in blood. There are urgent and important applications for serological point-of-care (POC) assays. However, available detection methods are either insufficiently sensitive or too complex for POC settings. Here, we demonstrate that lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA), which is arguably the simplest universal molecular detection approach, can serve as a methodological platform for highly sensitive serological POC assays if combined with a simple, fast, and inexpensive electrophoretic step. In this work, we compared such electrophoretically

Accessory extensor pollicis longus from the extensor digitorum: a rare case report and review of the literature.

PURPOSE: Variations of the extensor pollicis longus are rare. When present, these include a separate extensor pollicis longus muscle, tendon or an intertendinous connection with nearby tendons within the deep extensor compartment of the forearm. Here, we report an extremely rare variation of an accessory extensor pollicis longus originating from the extensor digitorum. METHODS: An unusual muscle was found during the routine dissection forearm of a 71 year-old at death male cadaver. RESULTS: This variant muscle originated from part of the extensor digitorum muscle belly that supplies the inde

The role of transcription factors in shaping regulatory T cell identity.

Forkhead box protein 3-expressing (FOXP3+) regulatory T cells (Treg cells) suppress conventional T cells and are essential for immunological tolerance. FOXP3, the master transcription factor of Treg cells, controls the expression of multiples genes to guide Treg cell differentiation and function. However, only a small fraction (<10%) of Treg cell-associated genes are directly bound by FOXP3, and FOXP3 alone is insufficient to fully specify the Treg cell programme, indicating a role for other accessory transcription factors operating upstream, downstream and/or concurrently with FOXP3 to direct

Coexistence of rare variations of palmaris profundus and flexor superficialis muscle.

The superficial layer of the anterior compartment of the forearm is characterized by different morphological variations. During standard anatomical dissection, two morphological variations in the superficial compartment of the forearm were observed. The first one was the palmaris profundus, which originated from the radius and distally fused with the tendon to 3rd digit (from the flexor digitorum superficialis muscle) inserted on the medial phalanx of the third digit. The second variation was a distinct superficial flexor of the 4th digit represented by one muscle belly with originated from a

Fibrolipoma of Flexor Digitorum Profundus Tendon of Ring Finger Causing Triggering and Intermittent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Lipomas are most common soft-tissue tumors but rarely are found to be symptomatic. <1% of lipomas are found in hand. Subfascial lipomas can cause pressure symptoms. Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) can be idiopathic or secondary to any space-occupying lesion. Triggering usually occurs due to inflammation/thickening of A1 pulley. Most have reported a lipoma in distal forearm or near median nerve, leading to triggering of index or middle finger and carpal tunnel symptoms. All the cases reported had either an intramuscular lipoma in flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) tendon slip of in

Targeting BRPF3 moderately reverses olaparib resistance in high grade serous ovarian carcinoma.

PARP inhibitors (PARPi) kill cancer cells by stalling DNA replication and preventing DNA repair, resulting in a critical accumulation of DNA damage. Resistance to PARPi is a growing clinical problem in the treatment of high grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC). Acetylation of histone H3 lysine 14 (H3K14ac) and associated histone acetyltransferases (HATs) and epigenetic readers have known functions in DNA repair and replication. Our objectives are to examine their expression and activities in the context of PARPi-resistant HGSOC, and to determine if targeting H3K14ac or associated proteins ha

Thumb Metacarpophalangeal Joint Kinematics and Elongation of the Ulnar Collateral Ligament.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to determine if the sphericity of the thumb metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint influences the joint's rotational axis (RA) and elongation patterns of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL). METHODS: Ulnar collateral ligament origins and attachments of 28 fresh-frozen cadaveric thumbs were marked with a radiopaque marker. Lateral radiographs were obtained in neutral and 20°, 40°, and 60° of flexion. The dorsal and palmar joint gap and the length of four different UCL portions were digitally measured in all flexion states. The RA was determined by the intersectio
