PURPOSE: Cubital tunnel syndrome is a well-described entity with many reported etiologies and anatomical compression sites. Accessory ossicles of either traumatic or congenital origin might occur around the elbow joint. Only one case reporting such ossicles compressing the ulnar nerve exists in previous literature. We aim to present this entity with a detailed description of the patient history and treatment.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of 30-year-old female presenting with classical signs of cubital tunnel syndrome-positive Wartenberg's and Froment's signs, hypoesthesia in the fourth and f

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity is a significant public health concern, particularly among women in the United States. Wearable activity trackers (WATs) have been proposed as a potential solution to increase awareness of and engagement in physical activity (PA). However, to be effective, WATs must include features and designs that encourage daily use.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the features and designs of WATs that appeal to women and determine whether devices with these attributes are effective motivators for women to be physically active.
METHODS: A mixed methods study guided by

PURPOSE: Knowledge of the unusual arrangement of the flexor pollicis longus (FPL) muscle is important as the variable tendon may be a rare cause of carpal tunnel syndrome.
METHODS: During a routine dissection at the Department of Anatomy, an unusual formation of the FPL muscle was observed in a formalin embalmed Central European cadaver.
RESULTS: This report presents a variation of the FPL muscle, where the muscle split and formed a separate accessory head inserting into the first lumbrical muscle. Moreover, a tendinous interconnection was present between the FPL muscle tendon and the tendon

BACKGROUND: The treatment for proximal interphalangeal joint (PIP) stiffness in extension requires extensor tenolysis, concomitant procedures to restore flexion, and intensive therapy. A stiff swan neck deformity without articular involvement is rare and the treatment is always challenging.
METHODS: Six patients with stiff swan neck deformities were operated between 2016 and 2023, and the outcome was analyzed retrospectively. A dorsal capsule release and radial lateral band translocation volar to the PIP joint axis were done. This translocation was maintained by a sling formed by the flexor d

Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is a rare genetic disorder that affects the developmental disturbance of ectoderm-derived tissues, organs, and accessory appendages, i.e. skin, hair, tooth, nail, and sweat glands. ED has two types hypohidrotic or anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia and hidrotic ectodermal dysplasia. We report this case of classical hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) with clubbing. The association of clubbing with HED is still rare. This case report aims to discuss the etiology, clinical manifestations, and management of ectodermal dysplasia. A multidisciplinary approach is required

Canonical NF-κB signaling through the inhibitor of κB kinase (IKK) complex requires induction of IKK2/IKKβ subunit catalytic activity via specific phosphorylation within its activation loop. This process is known to be dependent upon the accessory ubiquitin (Ub)-binding subunit NF-κB essential modulator (NEMO)/IKKγ as well as poly-Ub chains. However, the mechanism through which poly-Ub binding serves to promote IKK catalytic activity is unclear. Here, we show that binding of NEMO/IKKγ to linear poly-Ub promotes a second interaction between NEMO/IKKγ and IKK2/IKKβ, distinct from the well-charac

TOR kinase is a central coordinator of nutrient-dependent growth in eukaryotes. Maintaining optimal TOR signaling is critical for the normal development of organisms. In this study, we describe a negative feedback loop of TOR signaling helping in the adaptability of plants in changing environmental conditions. Using an interdisciplinary approach, we show that the plant-specific zinc finger protein FLZ8 acts as a regulator of TOR signaling in Arabidopsis. In sugar sufficiency, TOR-dependent and -independent histone modifications upregulate the expression of FLZ8. FLZ8 negatively regulates TOR s

TAX1BP1 is a selective macroautophagy/autophagy receptor that plays a central role in host defense to pathogens and in regulating the innate immune system. TAX1BP1 facilitates the xenophagic clearance of pathogenic bacteria such as Salmonella typhimurium and Mycobacterium tuberculosis and regulates TLR3 (toll-like receptor 3)-TLR4 and DDX58/RIG-I-like receptor (RLR) signaling by targeting TICAM1 and MAVS for autophagic degradation respectively. In addition to these canonical autophagy receptor functions, TAX1BP1 can also exert multiple accessory functions that influence the biogenesis and matu

The X family polymerases (PolXs) are specialized DNA polymerases that are found in all domains of life. While the main representatives of eukaryotic PolXs, which have dedicated functions in DNA repair, were studied in much detail, the functions and diversity of prokaryotic PolXs have remained largely unexplored. Here, by combining a comprehensive bioinformatic analysis of prokaryotic PolXs and biochemical experiments involving selected recombinant enzymes, we reveal a previously unrecognized group of PolXs that seem to be lacking DNA polymerase activity. The noncanonical PolXs contain substitu

Physical interactions between viral and host proteins are responsible for almost all aspects of the viral life cycle and the host's immune response. Studying viral-host protein-protein interactions is thus crucial for identifying strategies for treatment and prevention of viral infection. Here, we use high-throughput yeast two-hybrid and affinity purification followed by mass spectrometry to generate a comprehensive SARS-CoV-2-human protein-protein interactome network consisting of both binary and co-complex interactions. We report a total of 739 high-confidence interactions, showing the highe

Variations of the musculature within the upper extremity have been widely documented, with clinical implications ranging from motor dysfunction to compressive neuropathies. Herein, we described an aberrant muscle that originated from the anterior proximal forearm, formed a tendon that coursed through the carpal tunnel, and converged with the flexor digitorum profundus muscle to contribute to the first lumbrical. Additionally, the second lumbrical consisted of two heads, originating from the index and middle finger tendons of flexor digitorum profundus. Documentation and recognition of such ana

The regular treatment of tumors involving masseter muscle and buccal space like accessory parotid pleomorphic adenoma is performed with external approaches including parotidectomy and facelift incision, which require a large flap elevation and leave an external scar. The current study aimed to revisit the clinical features of the benign tumors involving masseter muscle and buccal space in the mid-posterior cheek region and presented a case series of the patients (n = 10) who underwent surgical resection by transoral finger-retraction. The accessory parotid pleomorphic adenoma (n = 4) and heman

PHD fingers are modular domains in chromatin-associated proteins that decode the methylation status of histone H3 tails. A PHD finger signature is found in plant vernalization (VEL) proteins, which function as accessory factors of the Polycomb system to control flowering in Arabidopsis through an epigenetic silencing mechanism. It has been proposed that VEL PHD fingers bind to methylated histone H3 tails to facilitate association of the Polycomb silencing machinery with target genes. Here, we use structural analysis by X-ray crystallography to show that the VEL PHD finger forms the central mod

During the deep dissection of the front of the forearm, an anomalous accessory muscle in relation to the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) muscle was observed in the right forearm. The accessory muscle consisted of a spindle-shaped muscle belly with a long tendon underneath the flexor pollicis longus muscle. When followed distally, the accessory muscle tendon was found lateral to the FDP tendon for the index finger and entered the palm deep to the flexor retinaculum. In the palm, we encountered the first lumbrical muscle as a bipennate muscle taking origin from the adjacent sides of the middle

Background Fifth carpometacarpal joint (CMCJ) fracture dislocation is a relatively rare injury and most will require operative treatment because of its unstable nature. Improper reduction and fixation lead to joint surface destruction, pain, and reduced grasping power. Intra-articular fragment reduction is often obscured by dorsally displaced ulnar fragment. Therefore, fifth CMCJ arthroscopy can be advantageous in assisting intra-articular fragment reduction. However, there is no detailed description of the portal landmarks or portals' relationship with adjacent important structures in the li

PURPOSE: A C5-C8 brachial plexus root injury, also known as a T1 hand, is associated with paralysis of shoulder abduction or external rotation and elbow flexion, accompanied by variable elbow, wrist, thumb, or finger extension deficits. We report the results of reconstruction for C5-C8 brachial plexus paralysis in 52 patients operated upon within 12 months of injury and having at least 24 months of follow-up.
METHODS: We considered surgery to be indicated if, by the fifth month after trauma, shoulder abduction and external rotation and elbow flexion remained paralyzed. Root grafting was possi

BACKGROUND: Cervical spinal cord injury (CSCI) causes severe motor deficit in upper extremities. The mixed segmental CSCI pattern is reflected in the combination of time-sensitive (TS) and non-TS myotomes in the upper extremities. Nerve transfers (NTs) restore upper extremity function yet remain TS procedures. A combination of neurological, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and electromyography (EMG) studies allows the identification of TS and non-TS myotomes in the upper extremities.
OBSERVATIONS: Nineteen months after NTs, flexor pollicis longus (FPL) and deep flexor of the index finger (FD

Force-sensitive textile sensors are becoming a research hotspot as a part of wearable devices. The core research topic is the method to obtain the sensing property, which decides the sensitivity and service performance of the sensors. Here, we introduce a new sensing mechanism based on a statistical change of contact resistance that exhibits an exponential decay upon strain or pressure, where a novel conductive bamboo fabric is prepared and the dependence of electric conductivity on the fabric structure is discovered. The fabric surface resistivity (ρs) is anisotropic with respect to the measu
