Keloid formation after congenital toe syndactyly release is associated with preoperative toe hypertrophy: A retrospective observational clinical study.

BACKGROUND: Keloids that form after the division of congenital toe syndactyly are rare and difficult to treat, and their etiology is unknown. In this retrospective study, we investigated the correlation between postoperative keloid development and preoperative hypertrophy of the toe syndactyly and made preliminary recommendations for perioperative therapy. METHODS: Twenty-six patients with hypertrophic toe syndactyly (hypertrophy group) and 26 non-hypertrophic patients (control group) were enrolled between 2014 and 2022. All patients were treated by the same surgeon for syndactyly division an

Oculodentodigital Dysplasia Presenting as Spastic Ataxic Syndrome in an Indian Patient.

Spastic ataxic syndrome is a combination of cerebellar ataxia with spasticity and other pyramidal features. Common causes of spastic ataxic syndrome include spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) 1, SCA2, autosomal recessive ataxia of Charlevoix-Saguenay, Friedreich ataxia, and hereditary spastic paraplegia type-7. We report a 32-year-old female who presented with unsteadiness of gait, incoordination, and tremulousness of both hands for 10 years with microphthalmia, microdontia, dental caries, and syndactyly. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed T2 fluid-attenuated inversion recovery hyper int

Prevalence and Patterns of Permanent Tooth Agenesis in Patients With Crouzon or Apert Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Crouzon and Apert syndromes are rare syndromic craniosynostoses frequently associated with craniofacial and dental anomalies, including tooth agenesis. Although individual studies have reported tooth agenesis prevalence data in specific populations, no attempts have been made to systematically synthesise these data. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the prevalence and patterns of permanent tooth agenesis in patients with Crouzon or Apert syndromes. The study followed a pre-registered protocol (PROSPERO CRD42024581856). Two independent investigators conducted a literature searc

Technique of Nonvascularized Second Metacarpal Transfer in the Treatment of Symbrachydactyly.

Various surgical techniques have been utilized for thumb reconstruction in the setting of aphalangia. Given abnormal proximal anatomy, nonvascularized toe phalangeal transfer has been a popular surgical technique in a subset of patients with monodactylous symbrachydactyly. However, altering the appearance of a noninvolved foot is often unappealing to many parents. Here we detail a surgical technique of thumb reconstruction utilizing the index metacarpal as a nonvascularized graft to improve thumb length and stability. This technique avoids the donor site morbidity associated with toe phalangea

Human-like malformations in anole lizards: Potential cases of "hopeful monsters" resembling chameleon morphology.

Vertebrates exhibit remarkable morphological diversity, with the head representing an exceptionally complex anatomical structure shaped by adaptations to feeding ecology, brain size, and sensory organ specialization. Proper fusion of facial prominences and the coordinated growth of the skull and brain are essential for normal craniofacial development in vertebrates, including humans. Disruptions in these processes, whether due to gene mutations or external factors, can result in craniofacial malformations. In this study, we examined two pathological embryos of the brown anole, Anolis sagrei (I

A Novel Clinical Feature in NOG Gene Mutation-Associated Syndrome.

Introduction: Noggin encoding (NOG) gene plays a critical role in early embryogenesis and development of bones, joints, cartilage, eyes, and neural tissue. The NOG gene encodes the noggin protein. Noggin is the only secreted inhibitor of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) that is associated with abnormal phenotypes in humans. The most commonly observed manifestations of NOG gene mutations include bilateral conductive hearing loss, proximal symphalangism, broad thumbs, hyperopia, and a distinct facial appearance. This genetic disorder was first reported in 1990 by Teunissen and Cremers. Since the

Plantar intermetatarsal perforator flap for first web skin-graftless syndactyly release: Anatomical study and clinical application.

INTRODUCTION: Foot-syndactyly has long been managed through conventional surgical procedures, each having its own distinct advantages and drawbacks. While these methods, which do not require skin grafts, exhibit a lower incidence of long-term complications, they lead to undesirable scarring on the dorsal side of the foot and reduced patient satisfaction. In this study, we introduce an innovative technique involving an intermetatarsal plantar flap, supported by an anatomical investigation and clinical application. METHODS: Eight freshly preserved lower limbs were injected with colored latex to
