A five-year-old boy of Iranian origin with multiple anomalies is described. His parents are first and second cousins. He presented with short stature, psychomotor retardation, microcephaly, ptosis, dacryostenosis, partial left nerve deafness, high arched palate, bifid uvula, total fusion between incisors, asymmetric preaxial and postaxial polysyndactyly, brachyphalangy, kyphosis and spina bifida occulta of S1. To our knowledge, a similar case has not been reported previously.

The first case of trisomy of probable 12p mosaicism originated de novo is presented. Comparison of the clinical findings of this patient with those of previously described cases of 12p trisomy derived from translocated chromosomes indicates that the symptoms of 12p trisomy are: (1) normal birth weight and physical development, (2) severe psychomotor retardation and generalized hypotonia, (3) peculiarly round face with prominent cheeks, hypertelorism, epicanthus, broad, flat nasal bridge, short nose with anteverted nostrils, large philtrum, broad, prominent lower lip, and (4) poly(syn)dactyly o

Oculodento-osseous dysplasia (ODOD) has been recognised in three South African patients from two kindreds of Dutch descent. Their ocular, nasal, dental and digital stigmata resembled those of previously reported cases, but their cranial hyperostosis and mandibular overgrowth were of much greater degree. In addition, the two survivors had serious neurological complications consequent upon spinal cord compression at the base of the skull and calcification of the basal ganglia. Two of the patients were the product of marriages between a pair of brothers and a pair of sisters, who were themselves

A case of focal dermal hypoplasia (FDH) or Goltz syndrome is described. The patient is a black female infant whose syndrome was first diagnosed at birth. This is a disorder of the mesoectoderm which is manifested by pigmentary skin changes similar to other disease entities, eg, incontinentia pigmenti and Rothmund-Thomson disease, but it is easily confirmed by specific significant histologic findings. The characteristic features are all noted in this infant throughout her follow-up, viz, atrophy and linear pigmentation of the skin, localized alopecia, papilloma and marked syndactyly. FDH is an

Dermatoglyphic studies were carried out on the congenital hand anomalies. Clinical materials consisted of 94 cases with hand anomalies and 148 of their normal relatives as a control. An analysis of the dermal ridge patterns was based on "the Memorandum of Dermatoglyphic Nomenclature" described by Penrose. The results were as follows: 1) In hypoplastic fingers, a high incidence of radial loops or arches was noted, which were quite rare in normal fingers. 2) In cases with crooked fingers, a high incidence of simian creases on palms was noticed. 3) In hypoplastic thumbs, higher positions of axial

A male patient presented with a pattern of congenital malformations including macrocephaly, absence of the corpus callosum, hypertelorism, small nose, bilateral inguinal hernias, postaxial polydactyly of all limbs and duplication with syndactyly of the big toes. His development was marked by growth retardation, repeated infections, cyanotic spells, seizures, and gross motor and mental retardation. This case probably represents a newly recognized malformation syndrome of hitherto unknown etiology.

Within this paper a family is being described in which foot deformities are shown over four generations. During two generations cleft foot is found as well as a syndaktylism. The cases are demonstrated clinically, by photographs and also by X-ray. The question of inheritance is being discussed in comparison with the existing literature, also taking into account the coexistence of cleft foot and syndaktylism.

The technique of surgery for syndactylia is described in detail. The author's opinion about the optimal age for surgical correction of equally or unequally long fingers is reported. The importance of early intervention in case of complicated syndactylia is stressed. Until growth has come to an end, continuous follow-up is necessary for early recognizing late contractures.

101 cases of syndactyly in 34 male and 14 female infants who were aged three months to seven years at the time of their initial surgery were reviewed one to 9.5 years thereafter. The web space was formed by a palmar and a dorsal flap; in 50% of all commissures the result was found satisfactory in the follow-up series. Straight incision - performed in two thirds of our cases - caused scar contractures and deformities of several fingers. In contrary, zig-zag or wavy incisions showed good results. Using almost exclusively full thickness skin grafts from the arm, the donor site looked poor because

Previous reports have noted a constant association between the Carpenter syndrome (acrocephalopolysyndactyly, type II) and mental retardation. We report two patients with this condition with normal intelligence. These observations indicate that mental deficiency is not necessarily a component of the Carpenter syndrome and that early surgical correction of the craniosynostoses may improve the chances of normal mentality.

This paper describes two cases of acrocephalosyndactylia (Apert's syndrome). Both very clearly showed the characteristic malformations. In addition, both patients showed synostosis between the calcaneus and the cuboid bone; this synostosis is not a typical feature of Apert's syndrome, but has been described in the literature once before.

A boy of 4 years presented with hypertrophy of the last three fingers of the right hand associated with syndactyly of the middle and ring fingers. The fingers were of adult length and wider. Arteriography did not show any evidence of an aneurism but demonstrated the existence of an extensive collateral circulation. Thermography confirmed the hypervascularization with the presence of hot points. The authors found reports on 118 cases in the literature published during the last century which could be analyzed statistically. There is a slight predominance in boys (55%) and on the right side. Two

A case of dominant polysyndactily with double pyeloureteral system is described and the relationships between anomalies of the limb and of the urologic system are discussed, with particular emphasis in the acro-renal syndrome.
