Incidence of minor physical anomaly in autism.

Children diagnosed as autistic were matched by age and sex with 74 control subjects and examined for presence of minor physical anomalies. Of the 16 anomalies scored, autistic children demonstrated a significant accumulation greater than the number exhibited by normal children. Three of the stigmata--low seating of ears, hypertelorism, and syndactylia--were expressed differentially in the two groups, and high palate as well as unusual cranial circumference were significantly high in both groups. Clusters of stigmata that might be associated with known chromosomal disorders could not be identif

Are the acrocephalosyndactyly syndromes variable expressions of a single gene defect?

Acrocephalosyndactyl (ACS) describes a group of diseases with craniofacial anomalies resulting from premature sutural craniosynostosis and hand and foot anomalies consisting principally of brachydactyly, syndactyly, and polydacytly. Although considerable phenotypic overlap exists, these syndromes are considered by most investigators to be the result of different (although possibly allelic) genes. This report describes the clinical and roentgenologic manifestations in a family wit acrocephalosyndactyly (ACS) showing considerably variation in phenotype. Two different types of ACS were clinically

Computed tomography of abnormally shaped pediatric cranium.

Computed tomography is an important diagnostic procedure in evaluation of the pediatric patient with an abnormal cranial size and (or) shape. Differential diagnosis of cranial abnormalities based on two hundred and thirty-one computed tomograms is presented. It allows accurate assessment of ventricular size, cerebrospinal fluid pathways, brain substance, and calvarium. Frequently the abnormality demonstrated is so specific that an etiologic diagnosis is made.

On the classification of the acrocephalosyndactyly syndromes.

This report describes a family in which two different types of acrocephalosyndactyly (ACS) were clinically identified. The proband presented with the classic stigmata of Pfeiffer syndrome, while her cousin was considered to be a typical case of Apert syndrome. Seven other family members also have unusually shaped heads and the facial appearance reminiscent of Crouzon disease. From the observations made in this family and from previous reports in the literature, we feel there is substantial reason to re-evaluate the ACS classification and to consider that the Apert and Pfeiffer types of ACS may

Epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica polydysplastica. A case of anesthetic management in oral surgery.

Epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica is a rare disease that affects the skin and mucous membranes. Manifest at birth, it is characterized by poor dentition, esophageal strictures, syndactyly, and severe chronic anemia. Our 12-year-old patient required extensive dental treatment which necessitated overcoming problems of anesthesia as well as developing a technique of management that provided maximum safety and a minimum of discomfort. Transmission electron microscopy of sections of the gingiva revealed possible degenerative collagen fibers and an interrupted basement membrance. Anchoring fibrils n

Patterns of combined limb malformations.

Seven different limb malformations types were defined in 544 affected newborns, apparently free from other anomalies, obtained from a series of 297,299 livebirths. These seven malformation types were: polydactyly, limb reduction, brachydactyly, symphalangy, syndactyly and split hand/foot. One anomaly type was present in 472 newborns (1.58/1,000) and two or three in 72 (0.24/1,000). The observed combinations of two or three limb malformation types cannot be explained as chance association. Therefore, a common etiopathogenic mechanism has to be considered when two or more limb malformation types

[Malformation of the tear ducts associated with clefts in the face (author's transl)].

A case of malformation of the tear duct associated with clefts in the face is described. To our knowledge this combination has not been described before. The whole symptoms complex consisted of: bilateral cleft lip upper jaw and gum, choanalatresia, mucocele of the left nasal cavity from adhesions of the lower concha with the nasal septum, cystic dilatation of the tear sac at the connection to a bony naso-lacrimal duct. Right inguinal hernia, syndactyly of the first and second left toes, iris-chroid coloboma right with congenital cataract and unilateral right convergent squint. Because of the

[Genetic syndromes of multiple congenital developmental defects].

Analysis of developmental defects in 615 children who had died in hospitals in Minsk during the 5-year period (1971--1975)showed that in 274 children defects were multiple. This number includes 78 children with chromosomal diseases and 37 children with genic syndromes of multiple congenital malformations (MCM). The total number of genic syndromes of MCM is extremely great, at present over 250 of them are known. Analysis of the available literature and the authors' own findings made it possible to develop criteria of morphological diagnosis of genic syndromes of MCM with due account for differe

Ocular findings in triploidy.

We studied the abnormal ocular and systemic findings in one case of true triploidy and two cases of triploid mosaicism. A liveborn triploid child 69,XXY, had abnormalities including cebocephaly, a single midline nostril, incomplete cleft palate, transverse palmar creases, partial syndactyly, and ambiguous genitalia. Ocular abnormalities included hypotelorism, blepharophimosis, microcornia, iris coloboma, cataract, persistent hyaloid vasculature, retinal dysplasia, and optic atrophy. A 16-year-old girl with triploid mosaicism had congenital left facial and body hemiatrophy, both growth and ment

Cryptophthalmos: symptoms and treatment of a rare deformity. A case report.

Since 1872 more than 50 cases of the cryptophthalmos syndrome have been reported. In addition to other deformities, the typical anomalies of this syndrome are the missing palpebral fissure, eyebrow and the rudimentary eyeball. This paper deals with the possibilities of operative correction in a 13-year-old female. We are of the opinion that by means of plastic surgery, social integration into the community of the patient is possible.

[Embryology and etiology of the Poland and Amazone syndromes].

In 1841 A. POLAND described a rare complex of malformations in the male, characterized a unilateral pectoral muscle defect combined with ipsilateral symbrachydaktyly. If in the female a POLAND Syndrome is associated with ipsilateral hypo- or aplasia of the breast as a leading feature, we propose to name this entity "Amazone Syndrome". Altogether 5 POLAND Syndromes and 40 "Amazone Syndromes" were seen in our department. For the latter a morphological grading into four groups was performed for clinical purposes. The malformation complex of the poland syndrome develops between the 2nd and 5th wee

[Acrocephalopolysyndactyly (type II (McKusick) acrocephalosyndactyly or Carpenter's syndrome. Report on 4 cases and an observation of the syndrome of Marshall-Smith (author's transl)].

Four observations of Carpenter's Syndrome, two siblings and two unrelated children, and a case of Marshall-Smith's Syndrome are reported, all sharing duplication of the terminal phalanx of the big toe and a dyskephaly. Carpenter's Syndrome has been noted in at least 27 cases inheritance; is autosomalcessive. Main features are: oxycephaly, odd facies, brachyclinosyndactyly of the hands, polysyndactyly of the feet, cardiac malformation. The question is to be answered whether all cases are genetically identical.

Craniosynostosis. II. Coronal synostosis: its familial characteristics and associated clinical findings in 109 patients lacking bilateral polysyndactyly or syndactyly.

This paper is the second part of a survey of 370 patients with craniosynostosis. It concerns 109 patients with coronal synostosis, with or without additional suture involvement who lacked polysyndactyly or syndactyly. Bilateral and unilateral coronal synostosis occurred with approximately equal frequency and there was an excess of males in both groups. Multiple suture involvements was frequent in patients with bilateral synostosis, but was uncommon in those with unilateral involvement. Those patients with bilateral synostosis and additional suture involvement were treated later than those with

Genetic control of lymphocyte activation: lack of response to low doses of concanavalin A in lipopolysaccharide-nonresponder mice.

C3H/HeJ mice do not respond to the polyclonal B-cell activator lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Escherichia coli; this was first described by Sultzer who observed that mice of this strain did not respond to an intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of LPS as measured by the accumulation of leukocytes in the peritoneal cavity. Neither were C3H/HeJ mice as susceptible to LPS toxcitiy (1). It was later reported that LPS-induced mitogenesis (2,3), adjuvanticity (4), and the appearance of Ia antigens on B lymphocytes as induced by LPS, (5) was also absent in C3H/HeJ mice. However, lymphocytes from these mic

A lethal neonatal dwarfing condition with short ribs, polysyndactyly, cranial synostosis, cleft palate cardiovascular and urogenital anomalies and severe ossification defect.

A case of severe lethal neonatal dwarfism is reported. It appears to be a new variety of short rib-polydactyly dwarfism. It is characterized by severe lack of ossification of all bones except the clavicle and the presence of cleft palate, as well as genitourinary, central nervous system and cardiovascular anomalies. Electronmicroscopy revealed accumulations of granular material in the chondrocytes.
