This survey shows that there are at least 6 autosomal and 2 gonosomal aberrations which may produce specific types of limb anomaly in 30%-80% of cases. The "expressivity" of these anomalies covers a wide range within the morphogenetic pattern. No entirely specific malformation type is seen. The most unusual malformation, aplasia of the thumbs with proximal synostosis of the 4th aand 5th metacarpals, is seen in 13q- (13r) but the precise cytogenetic basis is not clear. Aplasia of the thumb associated with synostosis of the 4th and 5th metacarpals was occasionally described before (unilateral [1

Biostereometrics is an accurate anthropometric system for quantifying geometric changes of facial form and the relationship of features as they are influenced by growth and by surgery. Facial features distant from the site of surgical intervention are influenced in their geometric relationship to each other by changes in the soft-tissue drape brought about by manipulation of skeletal tissues. The most accurate coordinate system should be elsewhere than on the surface of the face, but if this is not possible it should be in an area farthest removed from the surgical site. This investigation dem

The authors discuss the nosological position and the aetiology of a complex of malformations affecting a boy, born at the end of a 40-week pregnancy with a weight of 1420 g and height of 42.5 cm, who died at the age of 3 1/2 months. The case presented an association of an acrocephalosyndactyly, phalangeal hypoplasias with anonychia, aplasia of the abdominal muscles, a genital hypoplasia with cryptorchidism and hypospadias, patches of lipodystrophy localised on the outside of the arms, at the folds of the elbow and the popliteal fossae. The autopsy revealed a large interventricular communicatio

Three patients with postaxial polydactyly and other abnormalities of the hands and feet, hypoplasia and fusion of the vertebral bodies, and dental abnormalities are reported. Two were sisters born to normal unrelated parents; the other patient was the male offspring of a consanguineous marriage. We suggest that this constellation of abnormalities represents a recessively inherited syndrome.

An infant with skeletal deformities and hypocalcemic convulsions is described. The convulsions, which were first noted in the 5th week of life, as well as the low serum calcium level were transient. The skeletal deformities consited of deformation of the terminal phalanges of the right third finger and right second toe, syndactyly of the third and fourth finger of both hands and left pes equinovarus. X-ray examination revealed abnormal shape and structure of some bones of the hands. The most likely diagnosis is transient congenital idiopathic hypoparathyroidism, which has not yet been describe

This report describes and discusses the very rare occurrence of two heritable traits, the Saethre-Chotzen syndrome and congenital adrenal hyperplasia (21 hydroxylase deficiency, salt-losing type) in a female infant whose father presents the clinical manifestations of Saethre-Chotzen syndrome. Family study revealed no other instances of the recessively inherited adrenogenital syndrome. Other literature cases combining acrocephalosyndactyly and urogenital anomalies are discussed and compared.

The distinction between primary and secondary syndactyly is made on the basis of their relation to the morphogenesis. The latter is associated with antecedent malformation which results in subsequent refusion of parts. Based on these considerations, a practical classification is suggested. The management of the various types of malformations is considered in relation to the complexity of the structures involved. Certain deformities require very early treatment in order to permit prehensile function to the developing infant, or to release the impaired part. It is desirable to complete all surge

Forty-three consecutive cases of Poland's syndrome were analyzed and the relevant literature was reviewed. The syndrome is not hereditary and is of unknown origin. It affects males more frequently than females. The clinical features are variable but always include congenital aplasia and syndactyly. The middle phalanges are hypoplastic or absent so that effectively there is only one interphalangeal joint. The syndactyly is usually incomplete and simple. It may involve all fingers and frequently includes the thumb, which then lies in the same plane as the fingers. Poland's syndrome may also incl

Pregnant golden hamsters were injected ip with 2.5-20 mg/kg ochratoxin A on one of gestation days 7-10. The largest dosages when given on day 7,8, or 9 increased prenatal mortality and on day 9 diminished fetal growth. Malformations, such as micrognathia, hydrocephalus, short tail, oligodactyly, syndactyly, cleft lip, micromelia, and heart defects occurred, but no skeletal malformations were noted. These results add to the prenatal effects of ochratoxin A previously reported in mouse, rat, and chicken embryos.

Seven patients from four families are reported who had an inherited condition of which the main features were ankyloblepharon, ectodermal defects and cleft lip and palate. The ectodermal defects were partial or complete hair loss, absent or dystrophic nails, pointed widely spaced teeth and partial anhidrosis. Associated anomalies included lacrimal duct atresia, supernumerary nipples, syndactyly and auricular deformities. The inheritance of this abnormality was consistent with that of an autosomal dominant trait. The relationship between this and similar syndromes is discussed.

The syndrome of Moebius and Poland's anomaly have some features in common. The malformations of the limbs-especially those of the fingers (brady-, syn-, symbrachydactyly)-are identical in both disorders. Hypoplasia of the m. pectoralis major, characteristic for Poland's anomaly, may accompany Moebius' syndrome and cerebral nerve pareses may be associated with Poland's anomaly, thus distinction between the two disorders may be impossible. Both disorders affect the embryo at the same gestational age and the causative factor is unknown in either of them. Simultaneous evaluation of findings observ

Two siblings succumbed to glioblastoma multiforme, associated with hepatic focal nodular hyperplasia and cafe-au-lait spots. One sibling had syndactyly and multiple colonic polyps, while the other had an angiomatous malformation in the brain. Their mother died of myasthenia gravis. The findings suggest a hamartomatous syndrome of malformations that predisposes to brain tumors.
