The frequency of malformations of the hand is estimated at 0.5 percent of live births. The course of early developmental processes makes early correction advisable. Knowledge of the special anatomy and mastery of the microsurgical operation techniques makes this possible. The main indications and methods that hve been tested are discussed.

13 cases of ACS are presented: seven of them were identified as Apert's syndrome; two as Chotzen's syndrome; three as Carpenter's syndrome, and one as Pfeiffer's syndrome. These disorders have no known ethiology. However, it is necessary to look for diabetic antecedents and dermatogliphus alterations, both in the patient and the parents. An attempt to give an explanation of their hereditary penetrance is made. Frequency of associated abnormalities, mental retardation, therapeutics, prognosis, and recent encouraging results of plastic surgery of the face are reviewed.

Two patients with the Dubowitz syndrome are presented. This presumably recessive inherited syndrome was first defined by Grosse et al. (1971). So far 11 patients with this syndrome have been described. Major clinical findings are intrauterine and postnatal growth retardation, considerable microcephaly, mild mental retardation, hyperactivity, hyperextensibility of joints, eczema and a characteristic appearance of the face due to marked epicanthic folds, blepharophimosis, broadening of the bridge and tip of the nose and retrognathia. Minor anomalies as clinodactylyl of the firth digits, cutaneou

Pregnant rats were treated with various inhibitors of mitochondrial oxidative energy metabolism and with lowered oxygen tension, and the embryo fetuses examined for the occurrence of congenital malformations and for changes in enzymatic activities. Treatment with all agents tested resulted in the production of skeletal anomalies. Sodium phenobarbital was the most teratogenic of the drugs tested and produced a high incidence of malformations which included cleft palate, tail anomalies, spinal retroflexion, domed head, and facial hypoplasia. Diphenylhydantoin produced a low incidence of syndacty

A local flap, utilizing the skin over the dorsum of the thumb, for release of a first web space contracture has been described. Its construction allows for full integumentary release, adequate visualization of underlying contracted tissues, and a closure that provides full thickness sensory skin coverage over the entire web space and key pinch contact area.

ACS was highly variable in this family. At least one affected member could have passed as uninvolved. Others could have been assigned to ACS types III, IV or V. The current classification is probably sound, but great caution is needed to assign individual cases of ACS to any group other than ACS types I or II or the Carpenter syndrome. The great variability of ACS has obvious implications for genetic counseling.

Four boys with facial-digital-genital or Aarskog syndrome were whort with triangular faces, characteristic deformities of the hands and feet, and anomalies of the external genitalia. The syndrome appears to be inherited in an X-chromosomes-limked recessive manner. Previous reports emphasized the presence of hypertelorism but careful measurements of the interorbital dimensions revealed primary telecanthus in addition to hypertelorism. The palpebral fissures had a marked antimongoloid obliquity and in half the reported cases, there was unilateral or bilateral congenital blepharoptosis. Strabismu

In the past, a great deal of confusion in the nosology of craniosynostosis syndromes has been apparent. Such syndromes should never be classified on the basis of which sutures are synostosed nor on the presence or absence of mental retardation. In this paper, they are classified on the basis of overall clinical similarity and genetic considerations. The findings in each syndrome, the genetic aspects and the problems in differential diagnosis are discussed. Disorders presented include the Kleeblattschädel anomaly, Crouzon syndrome, Apert syndrome, Pfeiffer syndrome, Saethre-Chotzen syndrome, Ca

A rare syndrome that can be diagnosed radiographically has been reviewed. A characteristic physiognomy, variable ophthalmologic anomalies and relatively specific dental and digital defects provide the diagnostic features. No hereditary component was identified and the chromosomal pattern was normal. The history, appearance and characteristic radiographic changes may, as in this case, allow the radiologist to provide a diagnosis not previously appreciated.

During a survey of a selected group of residents of an institution for the mentally retarded, four previously undescribed syndromes were found. They were characterized as follows: cerebral maldevelopment, dwarfism and cataracts (autosomal recessive inheritance); cerebral maldevelopment, dwarfism and facial osteoproliferation (autosomal recessive inheritance); cerebral maldevelopment and colobomata (autosomal recessive inheritance); and cerebral maldevelopment and acrocephaly (X-linked recessive inheritance).

The commoner and more important congenital deformities of the hand are reviewed, considering their clinical picture, indications and optimal age for intervention, operative technique, postoperative care, and results. It is stressed that the value of many of the procedures can be assessed only after several years, and often only at the end of the growing period. The following malformations are discussed: 1. Syndactyly: There are many patterns of deformity; fusion of fingers of unequal legnth and distal bony fusion with convergence are absolute indications for early separation (six months of age
