Congenital melanocytic nevi in Bardet-Biedl syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Bardet-Biedl Syndrome (BBS) is a rare obesogenic disorder affecting multiple organs. The diagnosis of BBS is usually difficult and delayed due to this syndrome's wide variety of clinical features. This study aims to assess the rate of congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN) in the BBS population in an effort to bring light to an easily assessable and early manifestation of BBS to aid in earlier diagnosis. METHODS: We utilized a survey distributed to patients with BBS registered within the Clinical Registry Investigating Bardet-Biedl Syndrome database. Analysis was performed to identify

An Unusual Case of Left-Sided Poland Syndrome Presenting with Diaphragmatic Hernia and Mediastinal Shift with Absence of Hand and Scapular Deformity.

INTRODUCTION: Poland syndrome (PS) is a rare congenital condition often defined by unilateral aplasia of the pectoralis major, predominantly affecting the right side of the body. The second most prevalent manifestation is symbrachydactyly, characterized by excessively short and webbed fingers. CASE REPORT: This report concerns an 18-year-old guy who presented to the orthopedic outpatient clinic with a complaint of left chest pain during exertion, identified with the rare left-sided PS characterized by the absence of the left antero-inferior pectoralis major muscle. The physical examination of

Long Term Treatment of Corticostreroids May Cause Hepatotoxicity and Oxidative Damage: A Case Controlled Study.

Bacterial populations present in Hg-rich environments have evolved biological mechanisms to detoxify methylmercury and other organometallic mercury compounds. The most common resistance mechanism relies on the H(+)-assisted cleavage of the Hg-C bond of methylmercury by the organomercurial lyase MerB. Although the initial reaction steps which lead to the loss of methane from methylmercury have already been studied experimentally and computationally, the reaction steps leading to the removal of Hg(2+) from MerB and regeneration of the active site for a new round of catalysis have not yet been el

Single-stage Congenital Polysyndactyly Release: Outcomes and Long-term Followup.

The current surgical strategy for syndactyly is multistage operations in which every other web is released, leaving adjacent webs unoperated for the next stage to avoid a presumed possible digital vascular compromise. In this series, we present our experience with single-stage multiple syndactylies release. A total of 7 patients, including 2 patients with bilateral hand involvement, were included. Dorsal and volar triangular flaps were created for commissure reconstruction, and zigzag manner volar and dorsal incisions were made to release the webbed fingers. Sterile thermoplastic splints were

Triphalangeal thump, thumb duplication, and syndactyly: The first case report in the literature.

RATIONALE: Triphalangeal thumb (TPT) is a rare congenital malformation where the thumb has three phalanges instead of two. Syndactyly is a condition in which children are born with fused or webbed fingers. The combination of TPT, Syndactyly, and thumb duplication is extremely rare, especially when these deformities are combined in one hand. PATIENT CONCERNS: Hand abnormalities and polydactyl have been reported in a 1-year-old boy. DIAGNOSIS: A clinical examination reveals two thumb duplications, finger fusion (Syndactyly), and a thumb with three phalanges (TPT). The diagnosis was based on cl

Regulation of the limb shape during the development of the Chinese softshell turtles.

Interdigital cell death is an important mechanism employed by amniotes to shape their limbs; inhibiting this process leads to the formation of webbed fingers, as seen in bats and ducks. The Chinese softshell turtle Pelodiscus sinensis (Reptilia: Testudines: Trionychidae) has a distinctive limb morphology: the anterior side of the limbs has partially webbed fingers with claw-like protrusions, while the posterior fingers are completely enclosed in webbings. Here, P. sinensis embryos were investigated to gain insights on the evolution of limb-shaping mechanisms in amniotes. We found cell death an

Brachysyndactyly in Poland Syndrome.

A 36-year-old man presented with incidental findings of an asymmetric chest with hypoplastic and flattened left anterior chest wall due to absent left pectoralis major. He also had short and webbed fingers in the left hand. These deformities were present since birth. Chest X-ray showed hyperlucency on the left side. Computerized tomography (CT) scan showed an absence of the left pectoralis major. X-ray of the left hand showed hypoplasia of the proximal phalanx and aplasia of the middle and distal phalanges of the second digit, and aplasia of the middle phalanges of the third and fourth digits.

Capillary Hemangioma of the Finger in an Adult after a Burn: A Unique Case Mimicking Pyogenic Granuloma.

INTRODUCTION: While hallux valgus is a common deformity occurring in adults and adolescents, congenital hallux valgus is rare. There is a paucity of information available about the deformity and even less information about its cause. In fact, discrepancies exist within literature as to its etiology. This is a case report of bilateral congenital hallux valgus that appears to have been caused by preaxial polydactyly of the great toe, without a supernumerary digit, which to date has not been reported in literature. Markedly increased intermetatarsal and hallux valgus angles were present in both f

Emergent Spatial Patterns of Excitatory and Inhibitory Synaptic Strengths Drive Somatotopic Representational Discontinuities and their Plasticity in a Computational Model of Primary Sensory Cortical Area 3b.

Mechanisms underlying the emergence and plasticity of representational discontinuities in the mammalian primary somatosensory cortical representation of the hand are investigated in a computational model. The model consists of an input lattice organized as a three-digit hand forward-connected to a lattice of cortical columns each of which contains a paired excitatory and inhibitory cell. Excitatory and inhibitory synaptic plasticity of feedforward and lateral connection weights is implemented as a simple covariance rule and competitive normalization. Receptive field properties are computed ind

Poland's syndrome: a case report and review of literature.

Poland's Syndrome is a rare congenital condition. It is classically characterised by absence of unilateral chest wall muscles and sometimes ipsilateralsymbrachydactyly (abnormally short and webbed fingers). The condition typically presents with unilateral absence of the sternal or breast bone portion of the pectoralis major muscle which may or may not be associated with the absence of nearby musculoskeletal structures. Most of the Poland Syndrome is sporadic. We report a 19-year-old patient with variant of Poland Syndrome. To the best of our knowledge, this is one of the few documented cases o

Gene dosage of the transcription factor Fingerin (bHLHA9) affects digit development and links syndactyly to ectrodactyly.

Distal limb deformities are congenital malformations with phenotypic variability, genetic heterogeneity and complex inheritance. Among these, split-hand/foot malformation is an ectrodactyly with missing central fingers, yielding a lobster claw-like hand, which when combined with long-bone deficiency is defined as split-hand/foot malformation and long-bone deficiency (SHFLD) that is genetically heterogeneous. Copy number variation (CNV) consisting of 17p13.3 duplication was identified in unrelated pedigrees, underlying SHFLD3 (OMIM 612576). Although the transcription factor Fingerin (bHLHA9) is

Clinical spectrum of Silver - Russell syndrome.

Silver - Russell syndrome is a clinically and genetically heterogenous condition characterized by severe intrauterine and postnatal growth retardation, craniofacial disproportion and normal intelligence downward curvature of the corner of the mouth, syndactyly and webbed fingers. Diagnosis of Silver - Russell syndrome remains clinical; no definite etiology or specific tests have been established. In the recent years, it has been shown that more than 38% of patients have hypomethylation in the imprinting control region 1 of 11p15 and one-tenth of patients carry a maternal uniparental disomy of

Treatment of congenital syndactyly of the fingers.

BACKGROUND: Syndactyly or webbed fingers is one of the most common congenital malformations of the upper extremities, but it comprises few new cases annually. The purpose of treatment is to enhance hand function. METHOD: The article is based on current text books and literature searches in PubMed as well as the authors' clinical experience within this field. RESULTS: The purpose of surgical treatment is to separate the fingers and reconstruct a webspace. It is difficult to indicate exact treatment results because of large variations in the extent of the deformity. For syndactyly involving on

Complex toe syndactyly with characteristic facial phenotype: a new syndrome?

Nonsyndromic syndactyly is a common, heterogeneous hereditary condition of webbed fingers and toes that can be cutaneous or bony, unilateral or bilateral. We describe a patient with complex toe syndactyly and oligodactyly, some interesting skeletal hand findings and atypical facial features without other case like this described before. Cenani-Lenz syndrome (CLS) is a rare disorder with total syndactyly and irregular synostosis of carpal, metacarpal and phalanges, it may involve ulna and radius and digital rays may be absent, some of these were described with atypical facial features and one p

[Symbrachydactyly].

Symbrachydactyly is literally defined as a combination of short fingers with syndactyly. Blauth and Gekeler described four types of symbrachydactyly, ranging from simple shortness of middle phalanges to complete absence of digital rays. In type I (short finger) function is quite normal and syndactyly release is usually the only procedure needed. In type II (cleft hand), presence of a thumb and at least one ulnar finger allows pinch function. Surgical treatment, when needed, consists in separation of webbed fingers, resection of nonfunctional digital stumps, or finger translocation. In type III

The different appearance of the oculodentodigital dysplasia syndrome.

We report on two families with the oculodentodigital (ODD) dysplasia syndrome, also called Meyer-Schwickerath syndrome. It represents a rare disorder characterized by eye and facial abnormalities causing a unique facial appearance. The phenotype of the young patients resembles those of identical twins. We found syndactyly mostly at the hands and, additionally, characteristic phalangeal aberrations, defects in teeth enamel, and trichosis. In the one family, the ODD dysplasia syndrome seemingly originated in a new mutation. The affected child was treated surgically in our clinic (syndactyly sepa
