International journal for parasitology. Parasites and wildlife2026eng
Toxoplasma gondii is a widespread zoonotic parasite that can infect nearly all warm-blooded vertebrates. Wild boars (Sus scrofa) are valuable indicator hosts because of their broad habitat use, omnivorous feeding behavior, and frequent contact with both natural and human-modified environments. However, comprehensive nationwide data on T. gondii exposure in wildlife in South Korea remain limited. This study aimed to investigate the seroprevalence, associated risk factors, and spatial distribution of T. gondii exposure in wild boars in South Korea using nationwide surveillance samples collected

PURPOSE: To describe the clinical and multimodal imaging characteristics of an atypical clinical and imaging presentation of ocular toxoplasmosis.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed six eyes of five immunocompetent patients (including one patient with bilateral involvement), with clinically diagnosed ocular toxoplasmosis. Diagnosis was based on compatible clinical findings, multimodal retinal imaging, positive Toxoplasma gondii serology, and exclusion of alternative infectious etiologies. Intraocular PCR and Goldmann-Witmer coefficient analysis were not available. Clinical presentation, mul

The Damage-Response Framework (DRF) provides a conceptual model for understanding the pathogenesis of parasitic infections by distinguishing biological infection from clinical infectious disease. Rather than viewing parasite virulence as an intrinsic property, the DRF proposes that disease results from dynamic host-parasite interactions, with host damage determined by the magnitude and quality of the immune response. Both insufficient immune responses, permitting parasite proliferation, and excessive inflammation, causing immunopathology, can lead to disease. Using representative examples, inc

Toxoplasmosis, caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii, remains a significant global health challenge, particularly for immunocompromised individuals. Current therapies, based on pyrimethamine and sulfadiazine, are limited by toxicity, suboptimal efficacy, and the emergence of resistant parasite strains, highlighting the need for safer and more effective alternatives. In this study, we evaluated the antiparasitic potential of six 2-pyridyl 1,3-thiazole derivativesprivileged scaffolds previously reported for potent antitumor activity but never investigated against T. gondii. In vitro assays

INTRODUCTION: The Quadripartite One Health Joint Plan of Action and the WHO's Pandemic Agreement emphasise operationalising the One Health (OH) approach to strengthen global preparedness, prevention and response to emerging health threats. In line with these global commitments, Rwanda has developed a national One Health Strategic Plan to enhance multisectoral collaboration across the human, animal and environmental health sectors. However, effective implementation requires substantial investment in integrated surveillance, preparedness and response systems, highlighting the need for an evidenc

Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular apicomplexan parasite that infects a wide range of warm-blooded animals and causes a globally prevalent zoonotic disease. Mitochondrial ATP synthase is the terminal complex of oxidative phosphorylation and plays an essential role in parasite energy metabolism. However, the functions of many parasite-specific ATP synthase-associated proteins remain largely unknown. Here, we identified and characterized two novel ATP synthase-associated proteins, TgASAP5 and TgASAP6, in T. gondii and generated conditional knockdown parasite strains to investigate th

BACKGROUND: Ocular toxoplasmosis (OT) is the leading infectious cause of posterior uveitis worldwide, yet diagnosis remains challenging without a universal gold standard. Although deep learning (DL) shows significant promise for automated image analysis, a rigorous synthesis of its diagnostic accuracy across heterogeneous architectures and datasets is lacking.
METHODS: Following PRISMA-DTA and CLAIM-AI guidelines, we searched major databases through January 2026 for studies evaluating DL models for OT detection using fundus photography. Methodological quality was appraised using QUADAS-2. A b

BACKGROUND: Children born with congenital Zika syndrome typically present with structural abnormalities and neurological impairments that can disrupt postnatal growth. We aimed to evaluate longitudinal anthropometric trajectories of children with congenital Zika syndrome compared with children without congenital Zika syndrome in Brazil.
METHODS: In this matched-cohort study, we used Brazilian administrative data on singleton livebirths from Jan 1, 2015, to Dec 31, 2018, with follow-up routine primary care health data from birth to age 5 years. We excluded children with missing or inconsistent

In Tunisia, toxoplasmosis screening in pregnancy is common but not regulated. This study evaluated congenital toxoplasmosis after primary infections during the periconceptional period and the accuracy of diagnostic tools. We analyzed 209 women at the Pasteur Institute of Tunis (2005-2021) with primary infections classified as periconceptional (n = 50, 23.9%), first trimester (n = 121, 57.9%), or second trimester (n = 38, 18.2%). Congenital toxoplasmosis was confirmed in 29 cases (13.9%), diagnosed prenatally in 22 cases, and diagnosed postnatally in 7 cases. Transmission rates were 14%, 8.2%,

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasmosis, a protozoan parasitic disease caused by Toxoplasma gondii, has been a serious human and veterinary medicine problem with global distribution. In the current study, we assessed immunogenicity and protective efficiency of a novel dual-promoter DNA vaccine, harboring SAG1 and GRA7 genes, from RH strain of Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) with or without CpG-ODN as adjuvant in a murine model.
METHODS: BALB/c mice were immunized intramuscularly with pVitro-SAG1-GRA7 alone and pVitro-SAG1-GRA7 with CpG-ODN three times at three-week intervals. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assa

National happiness is related not only to socioeconomic factors but also to biological and ecological factors. This ecological correlational study examined associations between national happiness, cat density, Toxoplasma gondii exposure, and socioeconomic indicators across 93 countries. We hypothesized that countries with higher socioeconomic indicators (e.g., GDP, health expenditure, income level) would exhibit higher happiness levels. In contrast, we predicted that higher T. gondii exposure, both acute (IgM) and chronic (IgG), would be negatively associated with national happiness. Data on h

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii primary infection during pregnancy can lead to congenital transmission and cause serious fetal and neonatal complications. Seroprevalence for toxoplasmosis is an indicator of the intensity of transmission and of the risk of infection during pregnancy, yet such data are limited in Ethiopia. This multi-center study utilizing the immunochromatographic test (Toxoplasma ICT IgG-IgM, LD Bio) aimed at determining the seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis among pregnant women and its associated risk factors in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted

Toxoplasma gondii, an obligate intracellular protozoan infecting approximately one-third of the global human population, causes substantial morbidity in immunocompromised individuals, congenital complications, neuropsychiatric sequelae, and considerable economic losses in livestock production. Gut microbial communities critically modulate T. gondii infection susceptibility, disease progression, and clinical outcomes, positioning the microbiome as a central axis in toxoplasmosis pathogenesis. This review examines the bidirectional relationship between gut microbiota and T. gondii, wherein dysbi

INTRODUCTION: Fetal infections, particularly those caused by TORCH agents (toxoplasmosis, other [syphilis, varicella-zoster, parvovirus B19], rubella, cytomegalovirus, herpes), may significantly affect fetal growth and development, resulting in a substantial risk of morbidity and mortality. Since infections are mostly preventable causes of congenital anomalies, early diagnosis relies on serological and molecular testing and fetal ultrasound.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of fetal infections and their detectable ultrasound features.
METHOD: This retrospective s

TORCH infections (toxoplasmosis, other [syphilis, varicella-zoster, parvovirus B19], rubella, cytomegalovirus, herpes) constitute the classic group of congenital infections that may result in severe fetal and neonatal consequences. Transplacentally transmitted infections have been a critical component of prenatal care for decades. Although screening for this group of infections has been performed in Hungary since 1971, diagnostic approaches and screening strategies have undergone significant transformation. Current international recommendations, as well as national professional guidelines, no

UNLABELLED: Apicomplexan parasites are protozoan pathogens responsible for major human diseases, including toxoplasmosis, malaria, and cryptosporidiosis. Toxoplasma gondii has emerged as a model for studying cell division in tissue coccidians. Unlike higher eukaryotes that divide by binary fission, Toxoplasma replicates via internal budding (endodyogeny), yet many factors governing daughter cell biogenesis remain poorly understood. Here, we characterize TgDDP (T. gondii DIX-DnaJ domain protein), a previously unannotated protein containing both DIX and DnaJ domains-a unique combination restrict

BACKGROUND: National conversation has justifiably been concerned with firearm-related deaths and much less attention has been paid to the consequences of surviving a firearm injury. We assessed the risk of hospital readmission, length of stay (LOS) during hospitalization, and costs within 90-days after surviving an index firearm injury and compared these data with pedestrians and occupants involved in motor vehicle crash (MVC).
METHODS: Nationwide Readmission Database, a nationally representative readmission database from 2013 and 2014 was used to create a retrospective cohort study. The prim

OBJECTIVE: Several reports have suggested that IGF-I levels in patients with childhood-onset (CO) GH deficiency are lower than those observed in patients with adult-onset (AO) GH deficiency. However, these reports are unsatisfactory as there are several differences between the cohorts studied other than the timing of onset of GH deficiency; in particular, the patients were not matched for equal severity of GH deficiency. We have pursued this question further by examining the IGF-I standard deviation score (SDS) in patients with CO and AO GH deficiency, with equal degrees of severity of GH defi
