Brief clinical report: hallux varus and preaxial polysyndactyly in brothers.

Two brothers with hallux varus of both feet are reported. One brother also had duplication/triplication of the great toes. The parents had no skeletal abnormalities or abnormalities of dermatoglyphics.

Pre and post axial polysyndactyly, microcephaly and ptosis.

A five-year-old boy of Iranian origin with multiple anomalies is described. His parents are first and second cousins. He presented with short stature, psychomotor retardation, microcephaly, ptosis, dacryostenosis, partial left nerve deafness, high arched palate, bifid uvula, total fusion between incisors, asymmetric preaxial and postaxial polysyndactyly, brachyphalangy, kyphosis and spina bifida occulta of S1. To our knowledge, a similar case has not been reported previously.

Trisomy 12p syndrome: de novo occurrence of mosaic trisomy 12p in a mentally retarded boy.

The first case of trisomy of probable 12p mosaicism originated de novo is presented. Comparison of the clinical findings of this patient with those of previously described cases of 12p trisomy derived from translocated chromosomes indicates that the symptoms of 12p trisomy are: (1) normal birth weight and physical development, (2) severe psychomotor retardation and generalized hypotonia, (3) peculiarly round face with prominent cheeks, hypertelorism, epicanthus, broad, flat nasal bridge, short nose with anteverted nostrils, large philtrum, broad, prominent lower lip, and (4) poly(syn)dactyly o

The genetic mapping of a defective LPS response gene in C3H/HeJ mice.

The expression of a defective LPS response gene Lps and the major urinary protein (Mup-1) are concordantly inherited in backcross (C3H/HeJ x C57BL/6J)F1 x C3H/HeJ mice, indicating genetic linkage of these loci. Mup-1 is known to be linked to the brown coat color locus on chromosome 4 in mice; thus Lps can now be assigned to chromosome 4. A value of 0.06 +/- 0.02 has been estimated for the recombination frequency between Mup-1 and Lps. We have used the polysyndactyly (Ps) mutation further to localize Lps on chromosome 4. Lps is located between the Mup-1 and Ps loci.

[Acrocephalopolysyndactyly (type II (McKusick) acrocephalosyndactyly or Carpenter's syndrome. Report on 4 cases and an observation of the syndrome of Marshall-Smith (author's transl)].

Four observations of Carpenter's Syndrome, two siblings and two unrelated children, and a case of Marshall-Smith's Syndrome are reported, all sharing duplication of the terminal phalanx of the big toe and a dyskephaly. Carpenter's Syndrome has been noted in at least 27 cases inheritance; is autosomalcessive. Main features are: oxycephaly, odd facies, brachyclinosyndactyly of the hands, polysyndactyly of the feet, cardiac malformation. The question is to be answered whether all cases are genetically identical.

Craniosynostosis. II. Coronal synostosis: its familial characteristics and associated clinical findings in 109 patients lacking bilateral polysyndactyly or syndactyly.

This paper is the second part of a survey of 370 patients with craniosynostosis. It concerns 109 patients with coronal synostosis, with or without additional suture involvement who lacked polysyndactyly or syndactyly. Bilateral and unilateral coronal synostosis occurred with approximately equal frequency and there was an excess of males in both groups. Multiple suture involvements was frequent in patients with bilateral synostosis, but was uncommon in those with unilateral involvement. Those patients with bilateral synostosis and additional suture involvement were treated later than those with

Genetic control of lymphocyte activation: lack of response to low doses of concanavalin A in lipopolysaccharide-nonresponder mice.

C3H/HeJ mice do not respond to the polyclonal B-cell activator lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Escherichia coli; this was first described by Sultzer who observed that mice of this strain did not respond to an intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of LPS as measured by the accumulation of leukocytes in the peritoneal cavity. Neither were C3H/HeJ mice as susceptible to LPS toxcitiy (1). It was later reported that LPS-induced mitogenesis (2,3), adjuvanticity (4), and the appearance of Ia antigens on B lymphocytes as induced by LPS, (5) was also absent in C3H/HeJ mice. However, lymphocytes from these mic

A lethal neonatal dwarfing condition with short ribs, polysyndactyly, cranial synostosis, cleft palate cardiovascular and urogenital anomalies and severe ossification defect.

A case of severe lethal neonatal dwarfism is reported. It appears to be a new variety of short rib-polydactyly dwarfism. It is characterized by severe lack of ossification of all bones except the clavicle and the presence of cleft palate, as well as genitourinary, central nervous system and cardiovascular anomalies. Electronmicroscopy revealed accumulations of granular material in the chondrocytes.

Further heterogeneity of the oral-facial-digital syndromes.

Two patients with polysyndactyly of the halluces and typical features of oral-facial-digital syndrome, type I (OFS I), are described. Previously, bilateral hallucal polysyndactyly was considered to be a distinctive feature of OFD II, Mohr syndrome. The original classification of OFD II was based on clinical similarities between the affected members of the Mohr-Claussen kindred and the two siblings described by Rimoin and Edgerton. Review of these cases deomnstrates important clinical differences, so that justification for the original classification of OFD II is questioned. Retrospectively, a

Polysyndactyly and Marfan's syndrome.

An Egyptian Jewish family in which polysyndactyly is transmitted through four generations with 17 affected individuals is presented. The malformation is caused by an autosomal dominant gene with full penetrance and variable expressivity. In the newborn propositus the gene was fully expressed producing polysyndactyly of both hands and both feet. The mother had polysyndactyly of the feet but only syndactyly of the third and fourth fingers of the right hand and a post minimi on the left hand. In addition she had Marfan's syndrome due to a new mutation and transmitted Marfan's syndrome to one of h

Congenital limb anomalies:frequency and aetiological factors. Data from the Edinburgh Register of the Newborn (1964-68).

This paper reports a detailed follow up of 156 patients with structural upper and lower limb anomalies, obtained from the Edinburgh Register of the Newborn (a registration of 52,029 consecutive births between 1964 and 1968). At the time of this survey the patients were between 4 and 9 years of age. The Register had noted probably 96% of all children born with limb defects in Edinburgh between 1964 and 1968. It was found that the diagnosis was completely accurate in only 26% of cases, and partially so in a further 42%. The frequency of each anomaly has been noted, subdivided into isolated anoma
