Between 1962 and 1980, 30 pollicizations of the index finger for congenital absence of the thumb were performed. None of the 30 index fingers were lost during the intraoperative or postoperative period. Of the 14 cases followed up on a long-term basis, six required secondary procedures, three for scar revisions; one, bone shortening; one, tenolysis of flexor tendons; and one, tenolysis of extensor tendons. Function is the most important consideration in the evaluation of patients with congenital ulnar deficiency. The upper extremity function of 8 patients with ulnar deficiency was evaluated. None of these patients had been treated with surgical procedures directed to the elbow, forearm, or wrist. Dermatoglyphics of six patients with absence of thumb are described. Two specific abnormal configurations were seen in the palmar area. In the first, there was no axial triradius and the course of the ridges in the proximal part of the palm was transversal. In the second, a peculiar distal loop on the radial border was present with a palmar triradius. These abnormal patterns are probably due to the absence of a thenar volar pad or the presence of an abnormal one when the ridges are formed.

Dermatoglyphic analyses of 12 patients with the newly recognized Kabuki make-up syndrome revealed a combination of unusual dermatoglyphic patterns. They included frequent fingertip ulnar loop patterns (72%), the absence of digital triradius c or d (25%), an interdigital triradius bc or cd (33%), hypothenar loop patterns (67%), and ulnar loop patterns in the fourth interdigital area (17%). Other unusual findings included persistence of fingertip pads (58%), a single flexion crease of the fourth or fifth finger (25%), and an excess of minor flexion creases of the palm (92%).

A rare case of selective absence of the flexor pollicis brevis and abductor pollicis brevis with an intact functioning opponens pollicis and flexor pollicis longus which has not been previously reported is herewith presented. Congenital absence of the thenar muscles with or without absence of the flexor pollicis longus has been reported previously. During the surveillance of a consecutive sample of 35.600 liveborn infants in an urban hospital, limb anomalies were specially analysed. Polydactyly (28 cases), syndactyly (14 cases) and absence deformities (20 cases) looked not rare. No specific human teratogen have been recognized but this epidemiologic study is still in progress. The effect of chronic exposure to volatile anesthesics in operating rooms is evoked in two ectrodactylies.

A retrospective study of 60 patients in whom 80 hands demonstrated a congenital central deficity showed that 23% also had central foot deficits and 15% had a family history of similar hands. A new procedure is described for cleft hands with absence of the middle finger associated with a palmar cleft. Three skin flaps are made within the cleft. The index ray is transferred ulnarward--not merely shifted ulnarly, but supinated--to prevent overlapping of the fingers when they flex. A 23 year old, gravida O, conceived 18 months following insertion of a copper containing IUD. At 10 weeks; gestation the IUD was removed. At 42 weeks' gestation, an infant was delivered normally, with severe upper limb reduction deformities and other minor malformations. Six children in an inbred isolate (a gypsy colony) were found to have a syndrome of reduplication of the big toes, supernumerary fingers on the hands, cleft lip/palate or lingual nodule, and somatic and psychomotor retardation.
