Bilateral radial artery pseudoaneurysms associated with bilateral ulnar artery atresia: a case report.

Pseudoaneurysms of the radial artery are uncommon and most often localized in an area of penetrating vascular trauma or iatrogenic injury. Hypoplasia of the ulnar artery is even more rare. We report a case of bilateral radial artery pseudoaneurysms associated with complete absence of any ulnar contribution to the vascularity of the hand. A patient presented with bilateral tender masses adjacent to the anatomic snuff boxes that interfered with hand function. After confirming that these masses were bilateral radial artery pseudoaneurysms, resection of the pseudoaneurysms and microscopic reconstr

Congenitally blind individuals rapidly adapt to coriolis force perturbations of their reaching movements.

Reaching movements made to visual targets in a rotating room are initially deviated in path and endpoint in the direction of transient Coriolis forces generated by the motion of the arm relative to the rotating environment. With additional reaches, movements become progressively straighter and more accurate. Such adaptation can occur even in the absence of visual feedback about movement progression or terminus. Here we examined whether congenitally blind and sighted subjects without visual feedback would demonstrate adaptation to Coriolis forces when they pointed to a haptically specified targ

Are triphalangeal thumb-polysyndactyly syndrome (TPTPS) and tibial hemimelia-polysyndactyly-triphalangeal thumb syndrome (THPTTS) identical? A father with TPTPS and his daughter with THPTTS in a Thai family.

We report on a Thai man who had triphalangeal thumb-polysyndactyly syndrome (TPTPS, MIM *190605) and his daughter who had tibial hemimelia-polysyndactyly-triphalangeal thumb syndrome (THPTTS, MIM *188770). The father had polysyndactyly of triphalangeal thumbs, syndactyly of fingers, duplicated distal phalanx of the left great toe, brachymesophalangy of toes, and the absence of middle phalanges of some toes. He was diagnosed as having TPTPS. His daughter was more severely affected, having complete syndactyly of five-fingered hands in rosebud fashion (Haas-type syndactyly), hypoplastic tibiae, a

Distinct mutations in the receptor tyrosine kinase gene ROR2 cause brachydactyly type B.

Brachydactyly type B (BDB) is an autosomal dominant skeletal disorder characterized by hypoplasia/aplasia of distal phalanges and nails. Recently, heterozygous mutations of the orphan receptor tyrosine kinase (TK) ROR2, located within a distinct segment directly after the TK domain, have been shown to be responsible for BDB. We report four novel mutations in ROR2 (two frameshifts, one splice mutation, and one nonsense mutation) in five families with BDB. The mutations predict truncation of the protein within two distinct regions immediately before and after the TK domain, resulting in a comple

Clinical analysis of a large kindred with the Pallister ulnar-mammary syndrome.

The ulnar-mammary syndrome (UMS) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by posterior limb deficiencies or duplications, apocrine/mammary gland hypoplasia and/or dysfunction, abnormal dentition, delayed puberty in males, and genital anomalies. We present the clinical descriptions of 33 members of a six generation kindred with UMS. The number of affected individuals in this family is more than the sum of all previously reported cases of UMS. The clinical expression of UMS is highly variable. While most patients have limb deficiencies, the range of abnormalities extends from hypoplasia o

[Median clefts of the hand. Classification and therapeutic indications apropos of 29 cases].

Based on a series of 29 patients with median clefts of the hand (29 hands), the authors define the place of this malformation, its various clinical features and the therapeutic indications. The series consists of 13 boys and 7 girls, 9 bilateral cases and 11 unilateral cases. Involvement of the feet was observed in 9 cases. Several children also presented other malformations. 16 children were operated (22 hands). Two types of technique were used: simple closure of the cleft (Barsky's operation) and transposition of the index finger according to the Snow-Littler or Miura-Komada techniques. All

Topographic maps of human motor cortex in normal and pathological conditions: mirror movements, amputations and spinal cord injuries.

We studied motor evoked potentials to transcranial magnetic stimulation in patients with unilateral upper limb amputations, complete T10-T12 spinal cord transection, and congenital mirror movements and in controls. Different muscles in the trunk and upper and lower extremities were evaluated at rest. In controls, muscles could be activated with stimulation of regions several centimeters wide. These areas overlapped extensively when muscles studied were from the same limb and shifted positions abruptly when muscles were from different limbs. Distal muscles were easier to activate than proximal

Amelia: incidence and associated defects in a large population.

Amelia, or complete absence of a limb, is a very rare congenital anomaly. The incidence of amelia in a population of 1,213,913 consecutive livebirths in British Columbia during the period 1952-1984 was studied using the records of a population-based registry with multiple sources of ascertainment. There were 18 cases of amelia, giving a minimal incidence rate of 0.15 per 10,000 livebirths for this birth defect. Amelia occurred equally frequently in upper and lower limbs, and 11 of 18 (61%) liveborn cases also had malformations of other organ systems. In the group with lower limb amelia a speci

Functional status in ulnar deficiency.

Function is the most important consideration in the evaluation of patients with congenital ulnar deficiency. The upper extremity function of 8 patients with ulnar deficiency was evaluated. None of these patients had been treated with surgical procedures directed to the elbow, forearm, or wrist. The functional criteria included: (a) active ranges of elbow, forearm, and wrist motion, (b) power grip, (c) prehension, (d) dexterity, and (e) a patient's activities questionnaire. The averaged total active range of joint motion was 229 degrees or 46% of predicted normal active motion. Power grip avera

[Structural and ultrastructural quantitative study of skin and nerve biopsies in the diagnosis of congenital indifference to pain].

The muscolo-cutaneous nerve, and skin biopsies from 3rd and 5th finger-tips and the back were studied in a 8-year-old girl with congenital indifference to pain, and in a control child of the same age. The tips of the fingers, and the toes were the most damaged areas. The diameters of myelinated and unmyelinated fibers of the nerve in the sick child and the control child were compared. A loss of 54% of myelinated fibers and 33% of unmyelinated fibers was observed. In the skin, the loss of myelinated fibers was 82% in the 3rd finger-tip, 78% in the 5th, and 35% in the back, and of unmyelinated f
