Parental Aesthetic Anxiety, Disability Aesthetics, and the Ethics of Surgical Normalization in Congenital Hand Differences.

Children born with congenital hand differences (syndactyly, fusion of adjacent digits; polydactyly, duplication of digits; radial club hand, partial or complete absence of the radius; and symbrachydactyly, short, webbed, or absent fingers) occupy a unique and underexamined position at the intersection of pediatric surgery and disability studies. While surgical literature has meticulously documented operative techniques, functional outcomes, and complication profiles, it has almost entirely neglected the aesthetic and cultural dimensions of the decision to operate. This narrative review address

The First Molecular Profiling of JAK2 Exon 12 and Flanking Intronic Sequences in Indonesia.

OBJECTIVE: Data on JAK2 Exon 12 mutations in Indonesia are not available. This study aimed to explore the presence of known JAK2 exon 12 coding mutations in V617F-negative myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) patients in Indonesia and to describe any novel intronic changes downstream of exon 12. METHODS: A total of 198 V617F-negative MPN samples were screened using allele-specific polymerase chain reaction (AS-PCR) for four commonly reported canonical exon 12 mutations. Of these, 57 cases were selected at random or for atypical PCR band patterns and underwent bidirectional Sanger sequencing of a

Case Report: A novel variant in fibrillin-2 identified in a congenital contractural arachnodactyly family with phenotypic heterogeneity.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Congenital contractural arachnodactyly (CCA) is a rare autosomal dominant connective tissue disorder, and FBN2 is its only known causative gene. CCA is characterized by joint contractures, arachnodactyly, scoliosis, and crumpled ears. Due to its rarity, phenotypic diversity, heterogeneity, and clinical overlap with conditions such as Marfan syndrome (MFS), the diagnosis remains challenging, and genetic screening plays a critical role in facilitating accurate diagnosis. We recruited a CCA family with three patients across three generations and detected their genetic e

Delayed diagnosis of Townes-Brocks syndrome accompanied with kidney failure.

Townes-Brocks syndrome (TBS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder typically characterized by the triad of anorectal malformations, external ear anomalies and hand malformations such as preaxial polydactyly, caused by mutations in the SALL1 gene. Kidney involvement, although less common, can progress to end-stage kidney failure. Early recognition of the characteristic features, particularly those related to SALL1, is crucial for accurate diagnosis, management, and genetic counseling. Here, we present a Turkish family with TBS in which the diagnosis was delayed due to the absence of the classic

Aplasia Cutis Congenita in Bart's Syndrome: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) is a partial or complete absence of skin layers which can be a part of a syndromic disease. Bart's syndrome is a combination of clinical manifestations including ACC, epidermolysis bullosa, blistering in the oral mucosa, nail dystrophy, or congenital absence of nails. Additional anomalies, such as pyloric atresia, a broad nasal root, hypertelorism, and ear abnormalities, may also be present. We aimed to raise awareness about concomitant anomalies with ACC. A 23-year-old female with gravid 3 para 2 gave birth to a male fetus of 36 weeks and 3 days who had multiple

A Rare Case of Congenital Absence of Flexor Digitorum Profundus in the Index Finger.

Congenital anomalies of the flexor tendons in the human hand are rare, and those of the flexor digitorum profundus tendon (FDPt) are even rarer. Our search of the literature unearthed only eleven studies, with only one other report of absent FDPt in the index finger. This study presents a case of a 19-year-old male with congenital absence of FDPt in the index finger, discovered incidentally while seeking treatment for post-burn flexion contractures in the ring and little finger. The girth of the distal phalange was reduced compared to that of the opposite finger, and the distal digital crease

Diving into Relevance: How Deep Sea Researchers Articulate Societal Relevance within their Epistemic Living Spaces.

The deep sea is many things: a subject of both fascination and indifference; a realm of great unknowns and scientific inquiry; and a source of untapped potential and looming exploitation. Its multifaceted nature is also visible in scientific research on the deep sea. While traditional relevance narratives in the field of deep sea research centred around fundamental knowledge creation, calls for doing societally relevant research are intensifying. The field is currently in transition regarding its understanding of societally relevant research, as it has been criticised for failing to provide na

A physiotherapeutic approach to a baby with right disgenesis of thumb and left agenesis of upper extremity: A case report.

A boy with bilateral congenital anomalies of the upper extremities with transverse absence of the left arm (agenesis) and absence of right thumb (disgenesis), fixed elbow in extension due to humeroradial synostosis thought that the humerus was intact. His wrist could move passively with 50° flexion, 0° extension, and 70° radial deviation. The other 4 fingers were intact, 4-5 metatarsal bones were in synostosis, and the fifth finger was clinodactyly. He was born by normal delivery. The physiotherapist started sensorimotor training to achieve functional movements of the right upper extremity. Th

Novel homozygous frameshift mutation of ITGB3 in the Glanzmann thrombasthenia patient with abnormal bone metabolism and congenital bone defects.

BACKGROUND: Glanzmann thrombasthenia (GT) is a rare inherited bleeding disorder caused by dysfunction of the integrin αIIbβ3 in platelets. The subunit β3, encoded by ITGB3 also plays a significant role in bone metabolism. Whether GT patients with β3 deficiency also suffer from bone pathology remains unclear. METHOD: The 21-year-old female patient presenting with bleeding diathesis and multiple congenital bone defects in her right hand, and her seven family members were included in the study. Whole exome sequencing as well as Sanger sequencing were conducted to identify GT-associated mutations

Unilateral Pachydermodactyly in a Young Female: A Rare Diagnosis Requiring Novel Clinicopathological Correlation.

Pachydermodactyly (PDD) is a rare, non-inflammatory fibromatosis characterized by thickening of the proximal interphalangeal joints, typically presenting bilaterally in adolescent males. We report a case of unilateral pachydermodactyly transgrediens in a 14-year-old female with a one-year history of painless, doughy thickening and hyperpigmentation on the left proximal interphalangeal joints. Comprehensive labwork and imaging studies revealed no evidence of inflammatory joint disease, leading to further investigation by biopsy to confirm the suspected diagnosis of unilateral pachydermodactyly

Evaluation of Flexor Digitorum Superficialis-Small Function: A Novel Dynamic Assessment Technique in Professional Music Performance.

BACKGROUND: The flexor digitorum superficialis of the little finger (FDS-small) exhibits anatomical variation, with absence reported in 2% to 30% of individuals. As FDS is the only flexor of the proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ), its absence may affect finger dexterity, particularly in professional musicians who depend on precise finger control. This study evaluates the impact of FDS-small presence or absence on the technical abilities of pianists and string musicians using novel dynamic assessment tools. METHODS: Thirty-one Bachelor of Music students (21 string players, 10 pianists) were

Surgical management of ectrodactyly-associated foot deformity in a child: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Ectrodactyly, also called split hand/foot malformation, is a rare birth defect where some middle fingers or toes are missing or not formed properly, making the hand or foot look split. This condition can happen on its own or as part of more complicated syndromes such as ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-cleft syndrome. Surgery for young patients is usually tailored to their specific needs on the basis of how much the condition affects their ability to function and their appearance. CASE PRESENTATION: In this manuscript, we reported a case of a Punjabi 6-year-old female presenting

A novel approach to treating mirror hand deformity: a case report of functional thumb reconstruction using a palmar incision design.

Congenital anomalies of the hand and forearm present a complex challenge in plastic and pediatric surgery. We present the case of a 13-month-old child with a congenital left mirror deformity, characterized by the presence of eight digits and two ulnae exhibiting near-perfect bilateral symmetry. A novel palmar-based incision design was employed for the corrective and functional reconstruction of the left hand, which may serve as a reference for the surgical management of similar conditions. Preoperatively, the radial-side middle finger demonstrated palmar opposition against the ulnar aspect of

Unilateral Ulnar Hemimelia with Humeroradial Synostosis and Oligodactyly: A Rare Congenital Limb Anomaly.

Ulnar hemimelia (UH), a rare congenital skeletal condition, is frequently linked to other upper limb abnormalities and is characterized by the partial or total absence of the ulna. We describe a rare instance of a 12-year-old patient with unilateral UH, humeroradial synostosis, and oligodactyly. The patient presented with obvious left upper limb shortening and functional limitations. The absence of the ulna, fusion of the humerus and radius, and the underdeveloped digits were all verified by radiographic examination. This case emphasizes the phenotypic variability linked to UH and contributes

Symptomatic pachydermodactyly: A case report.

Pachydermodactyly, an uncommon variant of digital fibromatosis, predominantly affects young men and results in fibrous swelling on the sides of the proximal interphalangeal joints. It is generally considered benign and asymptomatic, requiring only regular follow-up. Nevertheless, the absence of established diagnostic criteria has led to misdiagnoses, prompting the administration of unnecessary medications. In this report, we present a 14-year-old Japanese male with symptomatic pachydermodactyly (PDD), necessitating careful differentiation from juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) due to the pre
