Inflammatory Biomarkers and Disease Severity in Patients With Lymphatic Malformations.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) are associated with disease severity in pediatric patients with lymphatic malformations (LMs). METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of patients with LM treated at a tertiary pediatric hospital from 2008 to 2022. Exclusion criteria included absence of a complete blood count (CBC; n = 80), age ≥18 years (n = 34), insufficient LM documentation (n = 9), and Congenital Lipomatous Overgrowth, Vascular Malformations, Epidermal Nevis, Spinal/Skele

Dysplasia epiphysealis hemimelic in the knee: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Dysplasia epiphysealis hemimelica (DEH) is a rare congenital bone dysplasia characterized by overgrowth of the epiphyseal cartilage on one side, with its etiology remaining unclear. The condition predominantly affects weight-bearing joints of the lower limbs, typically presenting with localized pain due to a rapidly growing mass around the joint. In severe cases, symptoms such as limb length discrepancy and limb deformity may occur. Early diagnosis is challenging, and delayed diagnosis and treatment can easily lead to limb deformity and functional impairment. CASE PRESENTATION: Th

Giant rapidly involuting congenital hemangioma in a neonate: a case report.

This case report presents a rare instance of a giant rapidly involuting congenital hemangioma (RICH) in a neonate. Prenatal ultrasound identified a placenta-like lesion on the right lower limb. Postnatally, a massive, dark purple tumor was observed. Imaging confirmed the diagnosis of RICH with no deep tissue involvement. The lesion underwent complete spontaneous involution within the first year of life without intervention, accompanied by transient thrombocytosis and ulceration during regression. This case demonstrates that even exceptionally large RICH lesions follow the classic, rapid involu

A rare case of multi-segmental lumbar intradural ependymoma: clinical presentation and surgical management: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Intradural extramedullary(IDEM)-type Ependymoma is a rare clinicalentity belonging to the broader category of uncommon glial neoplasms. To date, most published studies have focused predominantly on classic anatomical locations-particularly the filum terminale, whereas the present case arose from an atypical spinal site, highlighting the pronounced anatomical heterogeneity characteristic of this tumor subtype. Moreover, its neuroimaging features demonstrate considerable overlap with those of more common intraspinal tumors, including schwannomas and meningiomas, thereby presenting a

Surgical Treatment of Lower Limb Lipodermatosclerosis Secondary to Congenital Absence of Infrarenal Inferior Vena Cava and Bilateral Common Iliac Veins.

BackgroundThe management of cutaneous dystrophy of lower limb resulting from congenital absence of inferior vena cava (IVC) primarily includes anticoagulation, compression stocking and bypass surgery. However, the clinical significance of surgical intervention for great saphenous vein (GSV) and pathologic perforator veins (PPVs) in combination with compression therapy remains unrecognized.Case ReportWe present a case report of a 44-year-old man experiencing bilateral legs heaviness and pain upon prolonged standing, as well as left leg lipodermatosclerosis due to congenital absence of infrarena

Behavioral and neural effects of virtual embodiment in individuals with Body Integrity Dysphoria.

Body Integrity Dysphoria (BID) is a condition characterized by a mismatch between an individual's physical body and their desired body state, often involving a desire for amputation. Virtual reality (VR) offers a non-invasive way to explore the effects of virtual embodiment on body ownership and sensorimotor integration. This study investigated the behavioral, phenomenal, and neurophysiological effects of embodying an amputated virtual body in three groups. Twenty individuals with BID (BID), 20 individuals with involuntary lower leg amputation or congenital limb absence (AMP), and 20 non-clini

Universal Hip Ultrasound Screening in Newborns: A 21-Month Prospective Observational Study in a Spoke Center.

Background: Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) encompasses a spectrum of neonatal hip abnormalities that, if not detected and treated early, may lead to long-term orthopedic sequelae. Universal ultrasound screening using Graf's method has been proposed to improve early diagnosis, though its implementation remains heterogeneous in Italy. Objectives: This study aimed to describe the outcomes of a universal ultrasound screening program for DDH conducted in a first-level birth center in northern Italy, evaluating DDH incidence, risk factors, management outcomes, and program feasibility. A rare case of LORICRIN gene c.684dup mutation associated with Vohwinkel syndrome in a Turkish patient, in silico analysis and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Vohwinkel Syndrome (VS) is a rare autosomal dominant skin disorder with two main mutation types: the classic form caused by GJB2 gene mutations and loricrin keratoderma (LK) linked to LOR gene mutations. LK typically lacks hearing loss and often presents at birth as collodion baby syndrome. METHODS: A 7-year-old male proband presenting with congenital thickening of the palms and soles was admitted to Başakşehir Çam and Sakura City Hospital. Whole-exome sequencing was performed from a whole blood sample using the MGI-400 platform, and common or benign mutations were excluded. Segre

Case report: Multiple approach analysis in a case of clinically assessed myotonia congenita.

Myotonia congenita, both in a dominant (Thomsen disease) and recessive form (Becker disease), is caused by molecular defects in CLCN1 that encodes the major skeletal muscle chloride channel, ClC-1. This channel is important for the normal repolarization of muscle action potentials and consequent relaxation of the muscle, and its dysfunction leads to impaired muscle relaxation after voluntary or evoked contraction and muscle stiffness. More than 300 CLCN1 pathogenic variants have been found in association with congenital myotonia, inherited as recessive or dominant traits (with complete or inco

Functionality Assessment of Patients With Cleft Hands.

BACKGROUND: Ectrodactyly, commonly referred to as cleft hand, is a rare pathology characterized by a deficiency and/or complete absence of the central ray in each hand. In order to customize treatment and improve the patient's quality of life, a more detailed functional evaluation is required. Although several studies evaluate functionality in different types of cleft hands, there are only a few studies that show self-reported evaluations. The objective of this study is to assess the hand function of cleft hand patients. METHODS: An observational retrospective study was performed on 12 cleft

Fetal Amelia With Hypoplastic Tibia and Terminal Fibular Hemimelia: A Case Report With Review of the Literature.

Congenital limb deformities, with a birth frequency of 0.55 per 1,000, are extremely rare prenatal defects that can present with either partial or complete lack of a limb or a specific portion of a limb. Amelia is a sporadic anomaly that is defined by the complete absence of a limb's skeletal elements, whereas hypomelia is defined by the incomplete development of a limb's skeletal elements. We present the case of a neonate with gross facial deformities in the form of the absence of both external ears and a saddle-shaped nose. The absence of the right lower limb bud was seen. The left lower lim

Pediatric cervical kyphosis in the MRI era (1984-2008) with long-term follow up: literature review.

OBJECTIVE: Cervical kyphosis is rare in the pediatric population. It may be syndromic or acquired secondary to laminectomy, neoplasia, or trauma. Regardless, this should be avoided to prevent progressive spinal deformity and neurological deficit. Long-term follow-up is needed to evaluate fusion status, spine growth, potential instability, and neurological function. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A retrospective review of 27 children (6 months to 16 years) with cervical kyphotic deformity was performed and limited to the MRI era until 2008, to provide a long-term follow-up after which complex instrume

Application of exome sequencing to diagnose a novel presentation of the Cornelia de Lange syndrome in an Afro-Caribbean family.

BACKGROUND: Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) comprises a recognizable pattern of multiple congenital anomalies caused by variants of the DNA cohesion complex. Affected individuals may display a wide range of phenotypic severity, even within the same family. METHODS: Exome sequencing and confirmatory Sanger sequencing showed the same previously described p.Arg629Ter NIPBL variant in two half-brothers affected with CdLS. Clinical evaluations were obtained in a pro bono genetics clinic. RESULTS: One brother had relatively mild proportionate limb shortening; the other had complete bilateral hyp

An exome sequencing study of Moebius syndrome including atypical cases reveals an individual with CFEOM3A and a TUBB3 mutation.

Moebius syndrome is characterized by congenital unilateral or bilateral facial and abducens nerve palsies (sixth and seventh cranial nerves) causing facial weakness, feeding difficulties, and restricted ocular movements. Abnormalities of the chest wall such as Poland anomaly and variable limb defects are frequently associated with this syndrome. Most cases are isolated; however, rare families with autosomal dominant transmission with incomplete penetrance and variable expressivity have been described. The genetic basis of this condition remains unknown. In a cohort study of nine individuals su

Overlap between Fibular Aplasia, Tibial Campomelia, and Oligosyndactyly and Fuhrmann's Syndromes in an Egyptian Female Infant.

We report a rare congenital limb defect with combined features of both fibular aplasia, tibial campomelia, and oligosyndactyly (FATCO) and Fuhrmann's syndromes. A female newborn infant, born to nonconsanguineous Egyptian parents, presented with isolated abnormalities of the lower limbs comprising bilateral shortening and anterior bowing of the lower limbs at the distal third of the tibia and split foot. Radiographic examination revealed complete absence of both fibulae, anterolateral bowing and shortening of the tibia, bowing of the femora, and absence of several metatarsal and phalangeal bone

Characterization of limb differences in children with Cornelia de Lange Syndrome.

Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) is a well-described multisystem developmental disorder characterized by dysmorphic facial features, growth and behavioral deficits, and cardiac, gastrointestinal, and limb anomalies. The limb defects seen in CdLS can be mild, with small feet or hands only, or can be severe, with variable deficiency defects involving primarily the ulnar structures and ranging from mild hypoplasia of the fifth digit to complete absence of the forearm. Interestingly, the upper limbs are typically much more involved than the lower extremities that generally manifest with small fee

Autosomal dominant congenital spinal muscular atrophy: a true form of spinal muscular atrophy caused by early loss of anterior horn cells.

Autosomal dominant congenital spinal muscular atrophy is characterized by predominantly lower limb weakness and wasting, and congenital or early-onset contractures of the hip, knee and ankle. Mutations in TRPV4, encoding a cation channel, have recently been identified in one large dominant congenital spinal muscular atrophy kindred, but the genetic basis of dominant congenital spinal muscular atrophy in many families remains unknown. It has been hypothesized that differences in the timing and site of anterior horn cell loss in the central nervous system account for the variations in clinical p

A specific mutation in the distant sonic hedgehog (SHH) cis-regulator (ZRS) causes Werner mesomelic syndrome (WMS) while complete ZRS duplications underlie Haas type polysyndactyly and preaxial polydactyly (PPD) with or without triphalangeal thumb.

Werner mesomelic syndrome (WMS) is an autosomal dominant disorder with unknown molecular etiology characterized by hypo- or aplasia of the tibiae in addition to the preaxial polydactyly (PPD) of the hands and feet and/or five-fingered hand with absence of thumbs. We show that point mutations of a specific nucleotide within the sonic hedgehog (SHH) regulatory region (ZRS) cause WMS. In a previously unpublished WMS family, we identified the causative G>A transition at position 404 of the ZRS, and in six affected family members of a second WMS family we found a 404G>C mutation of the ZRS. The 404
