Tick-borne bacterial and protozoal pathogens in horses in Austria - A cross-sectional study on current and past infections and potential risk factors.

Tick-borne bacterial and protozoal pathogens are a major threat to equine health worldwide. In Austria, studies on pathogens such as piroplasms, Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Borrelia spp. in horses are scarce and do not cover the countrywide horse population. To address this, blood samples from horses without prior record of infection with tick-borne pathogens (n = 588) were tested for the presence of Theileria equi, Babesia caballi or A. phagocytophilum DNA by PCR and for specific antibodies against these pathogens and Borrelia burgdorferi with commercially available assays. While no DNA of

Microscopy-PCR discordance and shifting epidemiology in South India: advancing diagnostic precision for control of morphologically similar bovine hemopathogens (Babesia, Theileria, Anaplasma) from a hospital-based study.

Advancing epidemiological insights is instrumental in optimizing region-specific hemopathogen control. A retrospective study in Chennai, South India screened 2,434 cattle over one year, revealing a 13.93% hospital-based prevalence of morphologically similar hemopathogen (Babesia, Theileria, Anaplasma) diseases (HPDs) by light microscopy (LM). Anaplasmosis predominated (8.63%), increasing during monsoon; theileriosis rose to 4.44%, babesiosis declined to 0.86%, with highest prevalence in multiparous Jersey crossbreds. Relative sensitivity, specificity, PPV and NPV of LM were prospectively estim

Molecular detection, diagnostic evaluation, and genetic characterization of blood-borne pathogens in fighting bulls from southern Thailand.

Fighting bulls are native cattle bred for traditional contests with economic and recreational significance in southern Thailand. These animals may be infected with several blood-borne and vector-borne pathogens, including Anaplasma spp., hemotropic Mycoplasma spp. (hemoplasmas), Babesia spp., Theileria spp., and Trypanosoma spp. Blood cytology is commonly used for diagnosis because it is simple and inexpensive; however, its diagnostic performance can be limited, particularly in carrier animals with low parasitemia. This study screened blood-borne pathogens in fighting bulls (n = 198) from sout

Seroprevalence, Risk Factors, and Environmental Correlates of Babesia caballi, Toxoplasma gondii, and Coxiella burnetii in Equids from Southwestern Greece.

Equids, primarily horses, are mostly used for recreational purposes, although in some rural areas they also serve as working animals, maintaining close and frequent contact with humans. Their risk of exposure to vector-borne and zoonotic pathogens can be affected by host-related factors, management practices and environmental conditions. This study aimed to investigate the seroprevalence and associated risk factors for infections by Babesia caballi, Toxoplasma gondii, Coxiella burnetii, and Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in equids from Southwestern Greece. A total of 159 equids were tested us

Hemotropic mono- and coinfections in Colombian ruminants: descriptive occurrence and host-related factors associated with coinfection in cattle.

Hemotropic pathogens such as Anaplasma, Babesia, Mycoplasma, and Trypanosoma are endemic to cattle and can cause coinfections, complicating disease dynamics and control. However, the host-related factors influencing these infections under tropical conditions remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of hemotropic monoinfections and coinfections in ruminants tested for hemotropic pathogens and to identify host-related factors associated with coinfection in cattle under field conditions in Colombia. A total of 104 animals were included: 91 cattle, 10 buffaloes, and

Vertical transmission and epidemiological dynamics of bovine tick fever in beef cattle in a Brazilian feedlot system.

Bovine tick fever is endemic in Brazil and responsible for significant economic losses and reduced animal welfare in beef cattle. Understanding disease dynamics, particularly the role of vertical transmission, is crucial for advancing epidemiological knowledge, especially for a disease for which few studies have been conducted in beef cattle. This study evaluated the frequency of tick fever agents across different categories of beef cattle in a feedlot system in Minas Gerais, Brazil, and investigated the occurrence of vertical transmission in newborn calves. A total of 597 animals were assesse

Infectious risks of transfusion: a 10-year look back and perspectives.

Almost 50 years following the advent -and ensuing tragedy- of transfusion-transmitted HIV, infectious diseases continue to shape blood transfusion practice and policy. Over the past decade alone, a myriad of changes span innovation in donor selection, testing and pathogen reduction, to emergence and re-emergence pathogens that have required evaluation and, in some cases, active intervention. Major developments include refined bacterial testing, novel findings on cold storage of platelets along with the expanded use of pathogen reduction to address the risk of bacterial contamination. Notable p

Vertical transmission, infection dynamics and risk factors for the occurrence of tick fever agents in beef cattle from a tropical region.

This study investigated the vertical transmission, infection dynamics, and risk factors associated with tick fever agents in beef calves raised in a tropical region over a two-year period. A total of 98 cow-calf pairs were monitored from birth until slaughter (males) or first calving (females). Blood samples were analyzed by qPCR and iELISA for Anaplasma marginale, Babesia bovis, and Babesia bigemina. Vertical transmission was detected only for A. marginale (6.5%). At 20 days of age, qPCR detected A. marginale DNA in 85% of calves and Babesia spp. DNA in 60-80%, indicating early exposure and a

Serum Sialic Acid as a Biomarker of Inflammation and Infection: Insights From Veterinary Medicine.

Serum sialic acid (SSA) levels, including total sialic acid (TSA), lipid-bound sialic acid (LBSA), and protein-bound sialic acid (PBSA), have been extensively studied as biomarkers of inflammation and infection across various species and diseases. In parasitemic sheep, elevated SSA levels likely reflect host-pathogen interactions and immune activation. Contrasting findings in bovine theileriosis demonstrated increased sialic acid (SA) levels during acute infections but decreased levels in severe parasitemia, suggesting variable responses based on parasitemia rates. SSA and LBSA levels in dogs

A comprehensive review of bacterial and hemoparasitic diseases in the water buffalo.

Water buffalo exhibit low mortality rates and high resistance to pathogens. They are less susceptible to developing diseases common in other bovids; however, they are susceptible to various bacterial agents and hemoparasites. Although buffalo are relatively resistant to the clinical form of many diseases, they can serve as reservoirs for various pathogens, facilitating their spread to other susceptible species, which is particularly relevant in a One Health perspective. This review compiles information on economically important infectious diseases affecting buffalo herds, including bacterial i

Characteristics of patients hospitalized for diabetic foot in a national hospital in Peru, 2024.

INTRODUCTION: Expansive processes around the third ventricle have always been a major neurosurgical challenge. Despite all the technological and scientific progress recorded over the last few years, third ventricle tumors are still a very difficult pathology to approach due to their formidable complexity.Treating such a tumor demands a good knowledge of local anatomy, pathophysiology, pathology and a good capacity to integrate all the data gathered from the patient prior to and during surgery. Last but not least, the correct means to approach such a tumor involves using modern neuronavigation
