The first molecular detection of equine piroplasmosis in Vietnam and genetic characterization of three co-circulating genotypes of Theileria equi.

Equine piroplasmosis, caused by Theileria equi, T. haneyi and Babesia caballi, significantly impacts on the veterinary and economic aspects of the global horse industry. However, many countries, including Vietnam, have not yet conducted epidemiological surveys to determine the prevalence of these haemoparasites. This study aimed to detect T. equi and/or B. caballi infections in horses and to identify their genotypes. Blood samples were collected from 154 apparently healthy horses in eight districts of Hanoi, Thai Nguyen, and Son La provinces located in the northern part of the country. Twenty-

Molecular epidemiology of tick-borne infections of bovines and canines of India - Current status.

Tick-borne infections such as babesiosis, theileriosis, and anaplasmosis in cattle, and babesiosis, hepatozoonosis, and ehrlichiosis in dogs, remain significant constraints to the animal health and productivity in India. This review summarizes the recent updates on molecular epidemiology, genetic diversity, and transmission dynamics of these infections. Babesia bigemina, Theileria annulata and Anaplasma marginale are the most important bovine pathogens, while B. gibsoni and E. canis are the major canine pathogens. Molecular studies reveal genetic variation and high haplotype diversity, with im

Babesiosis-Related Sepsis: Clinical Characteristics and Outcomes from a Multicenter Retrospective Global Research Network Analysis.

Babesiosis is a tick-borne protozoan infection often caused by Babesia microti. Symptomatic babesiosis typically presents as a malaria-like syndrome; however, it may result in more serious presentations, including sepsis. Immunosuppression is a known risk factor for severe babesiosis; however, limited data exist on additional predictors of sepsis. The aim for the present study is to identify predictors, complications, and outcomes of babesiosis sepsis. Using the TriNetX research database, adults who had polymerase chain reaction-confirmed babesiosis between June 2010 and May 2024 were identifi

Babesia divergens and Babesia microti species-specific genes that may drive pathogenesis.

Human babesiosis is an emerging disease as more cases are being reported worldwide. Most cases in Europe are caused by Babesia divergens, whereas most cases in North America are due to Babesia microti. While B. microti is also found throughout Europe, it appears to be less pathogenic. We generated high-quality nuclear and organellar genome assemblies of two B. divergens and two B. microti isolates from Germany by long-read sequencing and compared them with each other and with the reference RI B. microti from the US. Variants of VESA1 (variant erythrocyte surface antigen 1) and secreted antigen

Molecular interactions between ticks (Ixodidae) and cattle: Salivary proteins, host immune modulation, and pathogen transmission.

Ticks (Ixodidae) are major ectoparasites of cattle and highly effective vectors of pathogens responsible for babesiosis, theileriosis, and anaplasmosis. Their capacity to remain attached and blood feed for prolonged periods is underpinned by a finely regulated molecular dialogue at the tick cattle skin interface, driven primarily by the continuous injection of saliva throughout feeding. Tick saliva is a complex and dynamically regulated mixture of proteins, peptides, and small molecules that counter host hemostatic, inflammatory, and immune defenses, thereby ensuring uninterrupted blood uptake

First molecular detection of Babesia caballi in camel associated ticks in Uzbekistan, with no evidence of Anaplasma or Rickettsia.

Dromedary camels (Camelus dromedarius) have an important role in food and textile production in arid and semi-arid regions of the world, yet data on their tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) is scarce, especially in Central Asia. This study aimed to: (i) identify the ticks infesting camels from different regions of Uzbekistan, (ii) molecularly detect TBPs in the collected ticks for the first time. In 2024, 290 camels from three regions (Karakalpakstan, Jizzakh, and Navoi) were examined for tick infestation. Ticks were collected, morphologically identified, pooled, and screened using PCR and sequencing

Comparative Analysis of the EF-1α Intergenic Region in Babesia divergens Isolates: Insights into TA Repeat Variation and Potential Regulatory Implications.

Babesia divergens, a zoonotic tick-borne pathogen, causes bovine and human babesiosis in Europe. The Elongation Factor 1 alpha (EF-1α) protein is important in many cellular processes and has emerged as a possible target for subunit vaccine development against parasitic infections, and its intergenic region (IG) is an important tool for genetic manipulation of Babesia parasites. While the EF-1α locus of B. divergens has been described, structural variation between isolates was poorly defined. In order to fill this gap, we performed a comparative analysis of the EF-1α-IG in B. divergens human (R

Treatment failure in a dog with acute Babesia canis infection using lower-range therapeutic doses of imidocarb dipropionate.

Canine babesiosis caused by Babesia canis is considered an emerging disease in Central and Eastern European countries, including Germany. Imidocarb dipropionate is recommended for treatment of acute B. canis infections. A nine-year-old, male intact Golden Retriever living in Saxony, Germany, was presented in November 2025 due to lethargy, inappetence, vomiting, fever (39.6 °C), and darkened urine to a small animal veterinary practice. Ectoparasite prophylaxis was discontinued three months before the onset of clinical signs. An acute B. canis infection was diagnosed based on microscopic detecti

Using blood donor surveillance and clinical case data to shape our understanding of Babesia epidemiology in Manitoba, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Babesia is a parasite transmitted by the Ixodes tick and has the potential to be transfusion transmitted. Climate change and changing Ixodes tick distributions in Canada raised questions about the impact of Babesia on the blood supply. Following a risk-based decision making (RBDM) process, Canadian Blood Services initiated a multi-year Babesia nucleic acid test (NAT) surveillance program in 2024. The first year of the project focused on a region (Manitoba, Canada) previously determined by the RBDM analysis to be of highest risk for Babesia NAT-positive donations. The aim of this st

Morphological and molecular evidence of Peircei-group Babesia in brown boobies (Sula leucogaster) from the Brazilian coast.

Piroplasmids of the genus Babesia are globally distributed intraerythrocytic parasites transmitted by ticks and are recognized as significant pathogens in domestic mammals. In contrast, avian Babesia spp. remain poorly characterized, particularly in seabirds from the South Atlantic. This study describes the occurrence of Babesia sp. in brown boobies (Sula leucogaster) rescued along the Brazilian coast. Two individuals were analyzed: a juvenile from Espírito Santo and an archival sample from Santa Catarina. The 18S rRNA and ITS1 sequences were obtained and compared with reference datasets throu

The role of parasite-derived vesicles in modulating neutrophil responses in emerging human babesiosis.

Human babesiosis is an emerging infectious disease caused by a bloodborne unicellular parasite called Babesia. One of the major species of Babesia that infects humans is Babesia microti, which is transmitted through tick bites during a blood meal. As a successful pathogen, Babesia has evolved mechanisms to evade and manipulate the human immune system, ensuring effective development and proliferation. One such mechanism is the secretion of extracellular vesicles. While extracellular vesicles have been shown to regulate host-pathogen interactions in related intracellular parasites, their role in
