Theileriosis and babesiosis remain major constraints to livestock production, and increasing drug resistance necessitates alternative therapeutic strategies. Here, we evaluated the metal ionophore PBT2 for anti-piroplasm activity. PBT2 inhibited proliferation of two Theileria annulata schizont infected cell lines with IC50 values of 450.9 nM and 407.8 nM and significantly reduced parasite burden. Colony formation was suppressed in both cell lines, consistent with parasite-associated growth inhibition. Cytotoxicity in BoMAC cells was limited, yielding a selectivity index exceeding 60-fold. Human babesiosis is an emerging tick-borne disease caused by Babesia parasites, most notably Babesia microti and Babesia duncani in North America and Babesia divergens in Europe. Infections can be severe or persistent or relapse despite treatment, and current therapeutic options remain limited, underscoring the urgent need for new and effective treatment options. Acridone derivatives originally developed as potent antimalarial agents against multiple life cycle stages of the malaria parasites were evaluated for their antibabesial activity using continuous in vitro culture systems of B. duncani

Human babesiosis caused by Babesia duncani is an emerging zoonotic disease that poses a growing threat to public health. Since the first reported case in 1991, knowledge of this pathogen has remained limited. Recent completion of the B. duncani genome sequence has accelerated research aimed at elucidating its molecular biology. During its intraerythrocytic life cycle, B. duncani is exposed to oxidative stress generated by redox reactions. In this study, we identified and characterized an antioxidant enzyme from B. duncani-thioredoxin peroxidase-2 (BdTPx-2), a member of the peroxiredoxin family

BACKGROUND: Piroplasmosis, including Theileriosis and Babesiosis, poses a threat to livestock health and productivity worldwide. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying breed-specific differences in resistance to piroplasmosis remain poorly understood. Compared to Bos taurus, Bos indicus generally exhibits greater resistance to diseases such as piroplasmosis and trypanosomiasis, as well as enhanced adaptability to hot and humid environments. Yunnan humped cattle, an indigenous B. indicus breed, are well adapted to coarse feed and harsh environments, yet the molecular basis of their diseas

Tick-borne protozoa (TBP), including Babesia spp. and Theileria spp., cause substantial health and productivity losses in cattle. In Thailand, most epidemiological studies have focused on dairy herds, while beef cattle remain underinvestigated. This study assessed TBP infections in beef cattle and their ticks at the Thai-Myanmar border. Blood samples were collected from 158 beef cattle, including local animals from Thong Pha Phum and Sangkhlaburi districts and cross-border cattle imported from Myanmar. Engorged ticks, predominantly Rhipicephalus microplus, were removed and identified morpholog

Babesia vogeli is considered endemic in urban settings of Brazil, whereas Hepatozoon canis remains insufficiently documented in several regions, including the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro. This study investigated the frequency, spatial distribution, and determinants of infection by piroplasmids and Hepatozoon spp. in dogs from distinct environments. A total of 372 blood samples from pet dogs were collected between June and October 2023 in Maricá (Area 1; n = 105) and in the Administrative Regions of Barra da Tijuca, Guaratiba, and Jacarepaguá (Area 2; n = 267). Canine babesiosis is an important and potentially life-threatening disease of worldwide significance. European babesiosis encompasses all protozoan parasites of the genus Babesia that have been reported to cause canine disease in Europe. Despite its importance, cardiac pathology associated with European babesiosis remains poorly characterized. The aim of this study was to assess cardiac lesions in dogs that succumbed to European babesiosis. For this study, the archive of the Department of Veterinary Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Zagreb, was retrospectively searched for necropsied d

The frequent occurrences of Babesia microti (B. microti) infection have emerged as a significant global public health safety concern. The diagnosis of patients constitutes a crucial component in the prevention and control of babesiosis, necessitating the urgent establishment of efficient and accurate molecular biology diagnostic methods for B. microti detection. This study aimed to develop a sensitive, specific, and rapid fluorescent recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) technique for the detection of B. microti (B. microti) and assess its suitability for field use. This study developed a

Cattle fever ticks, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus and R. (B.) annulatus, are major constraints on cattle production worldwide because they directly reduce productivity and transmit the agents of bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis. Despite their shared hosts and similar vector capacity, their environmental preferences and the extent to which they occupy comparable climatic space remain unclear. We compiled historical occurrence records from global sources and, after quality control and spatial thinning, retained 2338 records for R. (B.) microplus and 527 for R. (B.) annulatus. Using clima

The present study was initiated to analyze ticks collected periodically from the vegetation in an urban marshy biotope of central Europe. During the one-year-long study period, 1960 ticks were found, including Ixodes ricinus (n = 1037), Dermacentor reticulatus (n = 610) and Haemaphysalis concinna (n = 313). DNA was extracted from 199 Dermacentor reticulatus and 47 Ixodes ricinus, selected from the beginning of their questing period. Molecular analysis of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (cox1) barcoding gene with the classical Folmer primers revealed that among 37 D. reticulatus all except t

PURPOSE: Canine filariasis and babesiosis are serious vector-borne diseases, often undetected in asymptomatic dogs. This hidden prevalence complicates disease control, as subclinical carriers may continue transmission. This study determined the prevalence of asymptomatic infections and explored potential links between breed types.
METHODS: Blood samples were collected from dogs brought to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital for illnesses, vaccination, sterilization, and regular health check-ups. Babesia and filarial worms were morphologically identified through Giemsa-stained thin blood smears a

Environmental changes and human activities such as deforestation and expansion of agricultural land are increasing tick-borne diseases including Anaplasmosis, Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis, and Theileriosis. These diseases, which affect animals, can be transmitted to humans through tick bites. Kiambu County's warm, wet climate provides an environment conducive to tick breeding and development. This study investigated the circulation and genetic diversity of Theileria parva and Anaplasma spp. in tick samples collected from Kiambu County, Kenya. Ticks were collected from cattle, goats, and sheep usin

Domestic dogs are frequently exposed to tick-borne pathogens such as Babesia vogeli, Hepatozoon canis, Anaplasma platys and Ehrlichia canis, which can cause a wide range of clinical manifestations, although little is known about the epidemiological and clinicopathological profiles of mono- and co-infections. This study aimed to characterize infection patterns and identify clinical and epidemiological factors associated with mono-infections, and co-infections with two or more pathogens in naturally infected dogs. We analyzed 181 dogs from a hospital population with suspected hemoparasitic infec

Since its introduction into the United States, the Asian longhorned tick (Haemaphysalis longicornis) has spread to several states and poses a growing threat to livestock due to its broad host range and rapid reproductive capacity. Since H. longicornis can transmit livestock pathogens such as Theileria orientalis Ikeda, it is a high priority to determine the vector competence of a United States population of H. longicornis for other livestock pathogens that circulate or may re-emerge domestically, such as Babesia bigemina, the causative agent of bovine babesiosis. This study evaluated the vecto
