Zoonotic babesiosis: A One Health menace.

Babesiosis is a disease caused by species of Apicomplexan protozoa of the genus Babesia. Species of Babesia parasitize the red blood cells of mammals and may cause clinical disease with varying levels of morbidity or mortality. Babesia spp. are naturally maintained and transmitted in hosts through their respective hard tick vectors, and a range of domestic and wild mammals serve as reservoirs for these parasites. Humans may become accidentally infected by some species of Babesia through bites from infected ticks or through blood transfusions and organ transplants from infected donors. Dependin

Hijacking the host: Red blood cell remodeling and extracellular vesicle release during Babesia infection.

The red blood cells (RBC) of various species serve as the host cells for the asexual stage of Babesia causing hemolysis and anemia, hallmark symptoms of parasitic infections that target RBCs. After Babesia invasion, RBCs are progressively modified by the parasite to suit their requirements of rapid proliferation and egress, while avoiding host immune consequences. This involves a complete morphological, biochemical and rheological overhaul of the RBC whereby the parasite confers on the host RBC, a new set of properties. Babesia infected RBCs exhibit increased membrane rigidity, reduced deforma

[Epidemiology and influencing factors of babesiosis: a review].

Babesiosis is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by tick-borne Babesia species. Currently, more than 100 species of Babesia have been characterized, including at least 4 species that may infect humans. Babesiosis is prevalent across the world, and humans are commonly susceptible to babesiosis. The incidence of babesiosis appears an obvious seasonal distribution, and peaks in summer and autumn. Recently, the number of reported babesiosis cases has increased year by year with the improvement of diagnostic and monitoring capabilities, and the range of animal hosts has continued to expand. Howeve

RMF-Activated Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Trigger Macrophage-Dependent Protection Against Babesia microti Infection.

Babesiosis is an emerging tick-borne zoonosis hampered by drug-resistant Babesia parasites and the absence of vaccines. Rotating magnetic field-activated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (RMF-SPIONs) exert anti-tumor and antibacterial effects, yet their efficacy against intraerythrocytic protozoa, including Babesia microti, is unclear. We established murine B. microti and Plasmodium yoelii infection models, using immunodeficient mouse strains and immune cell depletion approaches to dissect the antiparasitic mechanism, alongside cytokine detection, long-term physiological observation

A Two-Phase Approach to the Use of Tafenoquine Was Associated with Cure of Babesiosis in Two Immunocompromised Patients with Relapsing Babesiosis.

Two immunocompromised patients with relapsing babesiosis were cured using a well-tolerated course of tafenoquine (171 and 212 days, respectively), with negative polymerase chain reactivity intentionally exceeding the 120-day lifespan of erythrocytes before discontinuing the tafenoquine. During the first 10 days of tafenoquine both patients also received an atovaquone-containing drug regimen. This was prescribed based on the demonstrated benefit of atovaquone on the efficacy of tafenoquine for completely eradicating B. microti in an animal study.

A prognostic model based on seven cell adhesion molecule-related genes to predict the prognosis of colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is useful to assess exocrine pancreatic function by combining rapid imaging acquisition with the administration of secretin, a gastrointestinal hormone that stimulates the secretion of bile and pancreatic juice. However, extensive data on this method are lacking. This study aimed to determine whether MRCP with secretin administration is able to simultaneously detect alterations of both the pancreatic ducts and exocrine pancreatic function. METHODS: All subjects older than 18 years who underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and

Tick-borne pathogen diversity and clinical impact of tick-infestation in Serbia and North Macedonia.

Ticks and tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) pose an expanding health threat across Europe, yet few studies link tick infection data directly to human clinical outcomes. We conducted a prospective, cross-border "One Health" study in Serbia and North Macedonia to assess the prevalence, diversity, and potential transmission of TBPs from ticks to humans. A total of 133 tick-infested patients were enrolled at two healthcare centers (112 in Skopje, 26 in Novi Sad), and 135 ticks were collected from these individuals, alongside paired blood and serum samples. Overall, TBP DNA was detected in 66.6 % of tick

High diversity and distribution of ticks and tick-borne diseases in Sudan emphasizes the need for implementing cost-effective community One Health strategy.

Ticks and tick-borne diseases (TBDs) represent a growing challenge to both animal and human health in Sudan. However, the absence of consolidated nationwide data limits accurate characterization of tick fauna, monitoring of shifts in species distribution, and detection of invasive species. This knowledge gap not only constrains understanding of vector ecology but also weakens efforts to link tick distribution with disease occurrence, thereby undermining targeted control strategies. Livestock TBDs, including theileriosis, babesiosis, anaplasmosis, and lumpy skin disease, cause substantial econo

Invasive wineberry influences tick-borne disease dynamics across spatial scales.

In recent decades, increased incidences of tick-borne diseases, including Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi), Anaplasmosis (Anaplasma phagocytophilum), and Babesiosis (Babesia microti) have occurred in urban areas. The prevalence of the pathogens causing these diseases relies on a complex set of interactions between the tick vector (Ixodes scapularis) and its prominent hosts, white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus). Additionally, predators of small mammal hosts, such as red fox (vulpes) may influence host-tick interactions. While urbanization alt

Doxycycline-Induced Gastrointestinal Injury for Potential Lyme Disease Exposure.

Doxycycline is an antibiotic frequently used to treat tick-borne diseases. It is known to cause esophageal injury, although gastric injury is less often described. Few cases have been reported of gastrointestinal bleeding secondary to biopsy-proven doxycycline use. In the setting of widespread doxycycline use, it is important to recognize this drug-specific pattern of injury to guide appropriate patient management. This case demonstrates doxycycline-induced gastrointestinal injury and highlights characteristic histological findings.

A lethal combination: fulminant liver failure due to Babesia microti and Borrelia burgdorferi co-infection.

Babesiosis and Lyme disease are tick-borne infections endemic to the northeastern and upper Midwestern United States. Although both diseases can involve multiple organ systems, acute liver failure (ALF) is exceedingly uncommon. Co-infection with Babesia microti and Borrelia burgdorferi may exacerbate disease severity, create diagnostic uncertainty, and delay appropriate therapy. We describe a 77-year-old man with type II diabetes mellitus, stage IV chronic kidney disease, and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction who presented with dyspnea, cough, and peripheral edema. Geographic variation in risk of blacklegged tick-borne coinfections in the eastern United States.

Blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis)-associated diseases are increasing in incidence and geographic range in the United States. Pathogen range expansion may increase the risk of coinfections, which could complicate accurate diagnosis and treatment of tick-borne diseases. To identify regions of coinfection risk across the eastern United States, we used a national database of tick-borne pathogen occurrence to identify areas of co-occurrence between four I. scapularis-borne human pathogens: Anaplasma phagocytophilum human-active variant (Apha; anaplasmosis), Babesia microti (Bam; babesiosis), Bor

Clinical data on symptomatic cutaneous reinfections due to Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in Slovenia.

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic reinfections with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato occur, but their clinical and microbiologic characteristics are insufficiently defined. It, therefore, remains unclear whether having had a primary infection influences the presentation or course of reinfection. METHODS: We compared the clinical and microbiologic findings in patients with primary infection versus reinfection, with each episode presenting with erythema migrans (EM). The analysis included a cohort of patients diagnosed with EM between 1990 and 2014 at an outpatient clinic in Slovenia. RESULTS: A total of

A pseudochromosomal reference genome of the golden jackal, Canis aureus.

The golden jackal (Canis aureus) is rapidly expanding its range in Europe, driven by climate and habitat changes, human influence, and changes in competition with wolves. Its ecological flexibility enables it to thrive in various habitats, including urban areas, raising concerns about its potential role in spreading zoonotic diseases. Jackals may act as reservoirs for pathogens such as Lyme disease and babesiosis, affecting wildlife, humans, and pets. Their close genetic relationship with domestic dogs also increases the risk of hybridization and host-jumping, complicating disease dynamics. To

Lyme borreliosis.

Lyme borreliosis is the most common tick-borne disease in the northern hemisphere. It is a zoonosis caused by several species of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and transmitted by the bite of infected ticks of the Ixodes ricinus complex. Lyme borreliosis in North America and Europe differs in certain respects, likely reflecting the different Borrelia species that cause human disease in these locations. The earliest manifestation of Lyme borreliosis is the skin lesion erythema migrans, which develops at the tick bite site, typically 7-14 days after the bite. Some untreated patients will then (w
