IMPORTANCE: Babesiosis is a worldwide emerging tick-borne disease with an expanding geographic range in the US, Europe, and Asia. Red blood cell exchange transfusion (ET) is often used as an adjunctive treatment for severe illness from babesiosis, particularly in patients with high parasitemia, acute organ injury, or severe hemolytic anemia. Data supporting its clinical effectiveness, however, are lacking.
OBJECTIVE: To test whether ET improves clinical outcomes among hospitalized adult patients with severe babesiosis.
DESIGN, SETTINGS, AND PARTICIPANTS: This target trial emulation used data

Babesiosis is a tick-borne intraerythrocytic protozoal infection endemic to the northeastern United States. Coinfection with other Ixodes-transmitted pathogens may occur due to shared vector exposure, although confirmed triple infection remains uncommon. Severe babesiosis, defined by parasitemia ≥10% or evidence of organ dysfunction, may present atypically in immunocompromised individuals. A 73-year-old man with end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis presented with two weeks of cyclic fevers, chills, and weakness after hiking in upstate New York. Physical examination revealed asterixis withou

The emergence of tick-borne pathogens depends on ecological opportunity and barriers to persistence within vectors and hosts. Borrelia burgdorferi is well established in the mid-Atlantic, whereas Babesia microti and Anaplasma phagocytophilum remain patchily distributed. Five years of integrated surveillance (2020-2024) at three Maryland sites allowed us to track B. microti and A. phagocytophilum establishment by screening questing Ixodes scapularis nymphs, Peromyscus leucopus-fed nymphs, and P. leucopus samples by qPCR, contextualized with county-level human case data. B. burgdorferi was consi

Babesiosis is a protozoan infection transmitted by the tick, Ixodes scapularis. The disease presentation varies from asymptomatic to fatal illness. Usually, severe illness occurs in asplenic and immunocompromised patients. In rare cases, the complication of splenic injury, including infarcts and rupture, has been observed in young individuals. We present the case of a middle-aged woman who presented with abdominal pain and fatigue. She was found to be febrile and hypotensive with thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, and elevated transaminases. Imaging of the abdomen demonstrated multiple spleni

Endemic and emerging tick-borne diseases in humans and animals in the US are becoming more frequent and are likely driven by several socioecological factors. Although numerous hard and soft ticks are of medical and veterinary significance, this review focuses on species that are most relevant for the One Health practitioner. This article presents key aspects on significant tick species and tick-borne diseases in the US. Tick biology and ecology of several ticks are discussed, including black-legged ticks (Ixodes scapularis), western black-legged ticks (Ixodes pacificus), American dog ticks (De

The black legged tick, Ixodes scapularis, is a vector of the bacterium that causes Lyme disease and several other illnesses, including anaplasmosis, babesiosis, and tick-borne encephalitis. Although high-quality genome annotations are available for I. scapularis, functional understanding of I. scapularis genes is limited. To address this, we developed a platform for genome-wide CRISPR-Cas9 knockout screening in I. scapularis cells. To evaluate the platform, we performed a screen to identify genes associated with cellular fitness, and screens for resistance to treatment with copper chloride, An

Immunocompromised states pose a significant risk factor for both the reactivation of latent viral infections and for increased susceptibility to tick-borne infections. While Lyme disease, transmitted by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi, has been associated with varicella-zoster virus (VZV) reactivation, an association between babesiosis, a protozoan infection transmitted by Ixodes ticks that invades erythrocytes, causing hemolysis and systemic infection, and herpes zoster has not been well described in the scientific literature. This case of a 69-year-old female illustrates how impaired inn

Illinois is known to have established populations of four vector tick species of human health concern: Ixodes scapularis, Dermacentor variabilis, Amblyomma americanum, and Amblyomma maculatum. These ticks can transmit pathogens causing eight reportable tick-borne diseases (TBDs): anaplasmosis, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, Lyme disease, spotted fever group rickettsioses (SFG rickettsioses), Powassan virus disease, Heartland virus disease, and Bourbon virus disease. The incidence of these diseases is spatially varied and has been changing over time. The purpose of this research is to describe facto

The genotypic diversity of Babesia caballi, comprising three genotypes, namely A, B1, and B2, presents challenges for managing equine piroplasmosis. Therefore, research on individual B. caballi genotype is essential, but has been constrained by the lack of in vitro cultures representing genotypes other than the widely studied genotype A. In the present study, we established in vitro cultures of two B. caballi isolates from donkeys in Sri Lanka. Based on 18S rRNA and rhoptry associated protein-1 (rap-1) gene sequences, the isolates were identified as genotypes B2 and A, and designated NRCPD-B2

Pakistan ranks third globally in goat population with approximately 89 million heads in 2025; however, despite this large population base, the apparent PCR based prevalence of hemoparasitic and bacterial pathogens in goats remains largely underexplored. This study aimed to report the molecular prevalence and phylogenetic characteristics of Anaplasma ovis, Anaplasma marginale, Babesia ovis, Theileria ovis and Toxoplasma gondii in goat blood samples (n = 247) collected from two districts (Muzaffargarh and Multan) in Punjab between August till November 2025. Results indicated a significant variat

The objective of this study was to investigated the presence of Rickettsiales bacteria and Piroplasmida protozoa in canine blood samples from different peri-urban/rural localities in eastern Salta Province, Argentina. Complete DNA was extracted from 77 blood samples and analysed by conventional PCR assays targeting fragments of the genes for 16S rRNA (Anaplasmataceae), 18S rRNA (Piroplasmida) and gltA (Rickettsia). Also, a real-time PCR assay for direct detection of Ehrlichia canis and phylogenetic analyses of obtained gene sequences were applied. The analyses resulted in the detection of Anap

This study investigated the prevalence and molecular characteristics of canine vector-borne pathogens (CVBPs) circulating in diverse dog populations in Thailand by using molecular diagnostic methods. A total of 400 blood samples were collected from four groups (n = 100 each): stray dogs (Group A), vector-borne disease-suspected companion dogs (Group B), healthy companion dogs presenting for routine examination (Group C), and companion dogs presenting with non-vector-borne illnesses (Group D). The overall infection rate was 46.25%. Ehrlichia spp. were the most frequently detected pathogens (23.

Tick-borne haemoparasities (TBHs) cause substantial economic loss to the livestock population due to reduced productivity and working efficiency of the animals along with high mortality rate in untreated cases. A total of 240 blood samples were collected from native (N = 95) and crossbred cattle (N = 145) over 12 months. Microscopical examination of Giemsa-stained thin blood smears and PCR revealed that 27.08% of the animals were infected with at least one TBH. Theileria spp. was the most prevalent (18.75%), followed by Anaplasma spp. (11.25%), mixed infection (6.66%) and Babesia spp. (3.75%).

BACKGROUND: Canine vector-borne diseases (CVBDs) impose considerable morbidity in subtropical India, yet the epidemiological burden of haemoprotozoan polyparasitism, diagnostic performance of microscopy versus real-time PCR (qPCR), and clinical impact across five co-circulating pathogens have not been simultaneously quantified in West Bengal.
METHODS: Peripheral blood from 584 client-owned dogs presenting at the State Animal Health Centre, Salt Lake, Kolkata (July 2024-December 2025), was analyzed in parallel by bright-field microscopy and a five-target qPCR panel targeting 18S rRNA (Babesia

BACKGROUND: There is an increasing amount of reported clinical cases of emerging tick-borne diseases (eTBDs) such as human granulocytic anaplasmosis, neoehrlichiosis, babesiosis and rickettsiosis. The incidence of eTBDs in children is rather unknown, potentially due to low awareness regarding these diseases among health professionals. The clinical picture may be unspecific and access to laboratory tests limited. We aimed to investigate the incidence and clinical manifestations of eTBDs, including possible co-infections, within a pediatric patient group evaluated for Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB)

OBJECTIVE: Experiment 1 assessed the stability of C-reactive protein (CRP) when stored at -80 °C and compared the results of 3 commercially available CRP assays. For experiment 2, 2 assays were used to assess CRP during infection and treatment of experimental hemoparasite and H3N2 influenza infections. We predicted CRP would degrade with prolonged storage and that it would trend with clinical markers of disease and inflammation in the experimentally infected dogs.
METHODS: Archived serum from dogs with inflammation caused by experimentally induced hypovolemia was assayed using the Abcam canin

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne relapsing fever is an infectious disease caused by spirochetes of the genus Borrelia, leading to fever and spirochetemia in humans and animals. Borrelia theileri is the agent of bovine relapsing fever, which is transmitted by ixodid ticks of the genus Rhipicephalus and has been reported to cause mild disease in cattle. It has been infrequently reported in several countries over a broad geographic area; however, it has not been reported in Israel previously.
METHODS: Blood samples were collected from beef and dairy cattle in 23 locations in Israel. Real-time and conventi
