Risk factors for visual-motor integration and intelligence in children with craniofacial anomalies.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation between condition variables and child variables in children with craniofacial anomalies (CFA). Condition variables were brain anomalies, obliterated sutures, syndromic diagnosis, hypertelorism, phenotypical expression, age at craniotomy, and hospitalizations. Child variables were visual-motor integration (VMI), intelligence, and sex of subject. Setting was two university hospitals for children. Patients were 217 children with CFA, 125 boys and 92 girls, aged 5 to 16 years. Main outcome measure was the Developmental Test of VMI. Data on

Factors of non-compliance with the therapeutic regimen among hypertensive men and women: a case-control study to investigate risk factors of stroke.

To identify potential risk factors among the therapeutic regimen and life style which may increase the risk for stroke, a pair matched case-control study was conducted in Gaza Strip among 112 patients, who had been hospitalized for acute stroke and history of hypertension, and 224 controls with history of hypertension. Conditional logistic regression models show significant associations between stroke and medication not taking as prescribed (OR = 6.07; 95% CI: 1.53, 24.07), using excessive salt at meals (OR = 4.51; 95% CI: 2.05, 9.90), eating diet high in fat (OR = 4.67; 95% CI: 2.09, 10.40),

Interstitial deletion del(10)(q25.2q25.3 approximately 26.11)--case report and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVES: To present the clinical, cytogenetic, and molecular cytogenetic findings of prenatally diagnosed interstitial deletion 10q25.2-q26.1. The majority of distal 10q deletions are pure terminal deletions with breakpoints in 10q25 and 10q26. Only four patients have been described so far with interstitial deletions involving bands 10q25.2-q26.1. METHODS: Postmortem physical examination and autopsy of the foetus after medically terminated pregnancy. GTG-banding, reverse painting, and FISH analysis with BAC clones on amniocyte metaphases were performed to determine the extent of the deleti

Pure trisomy 19p syndrome in an infant with an extra ring chromosome.

We report a 12-month-old infant evaluated for severe hypotonia, psychomotor retardation, and facial dysmorphisms, including round face, high prominent forehead, downward slanted palpebral fissures, hypertelorism, short nose, chubby cheeks, long philtrum, anteverted lower lip, low-set asymmetric and dysmorphic ears. Karyotype analysis disclosed an extra mosaic ring chromosome, which included the whole 19p arm. Four additional patients with supernumerary ring 19 chromosomes have been reported, but none of them had pure trisomy 19p.

Multidisciplinary management of Opitz G BBB syndrome.

Opitz G BBB syndrome is a rare condition characterized by the 3 major anomalies of hypertelorism, cleft lip and palate, and hypospadias, although there may be other associated anomalies. The underlying genetic causes are complex and consist of both X-linked recessive and autosomal dominant forms of the disorder. Previously, there have been publications on the underlying genetics and case reports, but there have been few reports regarding the long-term outcome. The aim in this study was to review the range of clinical presentation and evaluate outcomes of the multidisciplinary management of a c

Mild optic nerve hypoplasia with retinal venous tortuosity in aarskog (facial-digital-genital) syndrome.

Aarskog syndrome (faciogenital dysplasia) is an X-linked recessive genetic growth disorder characterized by short stature, dysmorphic facies, shawl scrotum, and digital anomalies. The condition was first described in 1970 and the gene responsible is FGD1 (MIM#305400). There are several reported ophthalmic findings associated with Aarskog syndrome which are discussed. We describe a case of Aarskog syndrome with venous tortuosity, optic nerve hypoplasia, and a type-2 antithrombin deficiency.

Cat-eye syndrome with isolated idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.

A 34-year-old Japanese man diagnosed as having cat-eye syndrome (CES) with isolated idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (IHH) was treated at our university. He showed preauricular pits/tags, downward slanting palpebral fissures, ocular hypertelorism, and strabismus. However, ocular coloboma and anal atresia, major characteristic features of CES, were negative. Chromosomal analysis revealed malformation in chromosome 22 and eunuchoid features and a low grade development of secondary sexual characteristics were also evident. Endocrinological examinations revealed that this patient was in a

Early fetal akinesia deformation sequence: a case report with unusual autoptic features.

In this paper we report a case of early onset fetal akinesia, with unusual pathological findings. This is a product of medical abortion of young, healthy, unrelated parents. The mother's obstetrical history revealed two previous early miscarriages and a suspicion of FADS in the second previous gestation. At 17 weeks of gestation, an ultrasound examination disclosed absence of fetal movements, fixed extended knees and deformation of the feet. Amniocentesis showed a normal 46, XX karyotype. Hydrops fetalis and multiple skin webs (pterygia), which are usually present in cases of early fetal akine

PTPN11 (Shp2) mutations in LEOPARD syndrome have dominant negative, not activating, effects.

Multiple lentigines/LEOPARD syndrome (LS) is a rare, autosomal dominant disorder characterized by Lentigines, Electrocardiogram abnormalities, Ocular hypertelorism, Pulmonic valvular stenosis, Abnormalities of genitalia, Retardation of growth, and Deafness. Like the more common Noonan syndrome (NS), LS is caused by germ line missense mutations in PTPN11, encoding the protein-tyrosine phosphatase Shp2. Enzymologic, structural, cell biological, and mouse genetic studies indicate that NS is caused by gain-of-function PTPN11 mutations. Because NS and LS share several features, LS has been viewed a

Chromosomal region 13q21q31 and heterochrony of development.

If the theory of evolution is now largely accepted, there are still many debates on the mechanisms of evolution, including human evolution. One of these mechanisms is heterochrony of development including progenesis and neoteny. We report on a patient who could be an example of human progenesis. This boy was born prematurely, after a cesarian section for preeclampsia. Family history was unremarkable. He walked unaided when he was 2.5 years old. At 5 years of age height was 95 cm (< 3rd centile), weight 18.6 kg (40th centile) and OFC 54 cm (98th centile is 53 cm). He had a macropenis. He attend
