INTRODUCTION: Sprengel's deformity (SD) is a rare congenital scapular deformity, characterized by a small, elevated, or malpositioned scapula. Although it is rare, it is considered one of the most common congenital abnormalities of the shoulder in children. The scapula will be highly raised triangularly shaped, anteriorly and medially rotated, with limited scapulothoracic motion. As a result, patients will present with functional impairment, such as limited abduction and forward flexion, and cosmetic concerns. Various surgical approaches aiming for correction of SD have been established, inclu

BACKGROUND: Vertebral artery (VA) anomalies, particularly those associated with congenital atlantoaxial dislocations, are well documented in the literature. Typically, these anomalies are linked to persistent first intersegmental artery variants or occur in conjunction with occipitalization of the atlas. The case presented in this report is unique due to the presence of bilateral ectatic VAs with an anomalous course beneath the posterior arch of C1, in the absence of occipitalization of the atlas. This finding adds to the growing recognition of anatomical variability in patients with congenita

Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) is an underdiagnosed condition that is frequently misattributed to cervical spine pathology. Neurogenic TOS (nTOS), the most common subtype, often presents nonspecific upper extremity pain and paresthesia, making diagnosis challenging. We report a case of nTOS associated with a cervical rib that was successfully treated with ultrasound-guided hydrodissection (HD). Dynamic ultrasound examination demonstrated brachial plexus tethering with symptom reproduction. Serial HD resulted in immediate and sustained symptom relief, suggesting that this minimally invasive tec

BACKGROUND: Thoracic outlet syndrome affects 0.3-8% of the population, with arterial thoracic outlet syndrome being particularly rare. The management of arterial thoracic outlet syndrome requires complete thoracic outlet decompression along with arterial reconstruction when necessary, a procedure that is typically associated with significant risks, complications, and symptom recurrence. Our study aims to introduce a less invasive surgical method for treating arterial thoracic outlet syndrome caused by a cervical rib, which involves only cervical rib resection and scalenotomy. METHODS: Patients

Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS) is a rare congenital condition defined by the fusion of one or more cervical vertebrae, often associated with a range of skeletal and extra-skeletal abnormalities. The presence of cervical vertebral fusion and spinal deformities can make both airway management and neuraxial anaesthesia technically challenging in this population. This report describes a primigravida with KFS who underwent an elective caesarean section under spinal anaesthesia. The preparation included consideration of a potentially difficult airway, even though general anaesthesia had not initially b

BACKGROUND: Vascular thoracic outlet syndrome (VTOS), encompassing both venous and arterial subtypes, arises from extrinsic compression of the subclavian vessels within the thoracic outlet, leading to significant morbidity. Surgical decompression remains the definitive treatment to restore vascular patency and relieve neurovascular compromise. OBJECTIVES: This study analyzed the long-term outcomes of surgical management of VTOS over a twenty-year period, focusing on vessel patency, recurrence, functional recovery, and procedure-related complications. METHODS: A retrospective review was conduct

Slipping rib syndrome (SRS) is an underdiagnosed condition causing chronic debilitating thoracic wall pain due to hypermobility of costal cartilage and irritation of intercostal nerves. Conservative management includes analgesics and intercostal nerve blocks. When these measures fail, surgical rib fixation is considered. This case is the first reported successful use of intercostal nerve radiofrequency ablation (RFA) as a preoperative bridge in the management of SRS. We report a case of a 25-year-old woman with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and slipping rib syndrome who developed recurren

Background: Sprengel's deformity is the most common congenital anomaly of the scapula and is frequently associated with the presence of omovertebral bars and cervical spine anomalies such as Klippel-Feil syndrome. Multiple surgical techniques have been described aiming to correct Sprengel's deformities, with the Modified Woodward procedure being among the most widely utilized techniques. Bilateral Sprengel's deformities are relatively rare; when present, surgical correction is usually performed in a staged manner. Case presentation: We report a rare case of a three-year-old female with bilater

Herein, we report a rare case of a 1 year old female who was diagnosed with congenital lumbar hernia along with vertebral, ribs, and abdominal wall anomalies suggestive of lumbo-costovertebral syndrome. It was also associated with musculoskeletal, genital, ocular, and cardiovascular defects. The patient presented with a palpable swelling in the lumbar region, which was initially suspected to be a simple hernia. Other apparent ocular and musculoskeletal findings revealed complex systemic anomalies that necessitated further investigation. Imaging studies, including ultrasonography and computed t

BACKGROUND: Occult spinal dysraphism (OSD) represents a group of congenital spinal anomalies in which neural tissue remains covered by intact skin. Because the skin and nervous system share a common ectodermal origin, midline lumbosacral cutaneous lesions are frequently associated with underlying spinal abnormalities. Identifying which cutaneous markers warrant spinal imaging remains clinically important, particularly in children presenting with bowel or bladder dysfunction.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and emphasize the importance of the possible association between various midline lumbosacral cut

BACKGROUND: Cervical lipomyelomeningocele (LMMC) is an exceedingly rare form of spina bifida occulta. Cervical LMMC presenting in adulthood, particularly in the 4th decade, as cervical tethered cord syndrome is extremely uncommon.
OBSERVATIONS: The authors report the case of a woman in her early 40s who presented with clinical features of cervical compressive myelopathy. Neuroradiological evaluation showed cervical LMMC extending from C3 to C6, along with significant compression and flattening of the spinal cord. The patient underwent C3-6 laminectomy and excision of the lipomatous tissue, al

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the characteristics of neighborhoods where people with Spina Bifida (SB) live, driving distances, and the relationship of those factors to ambulatory ability.
DESIGN: Data from patients attending an adult and pediatric SB clinic in the National Spina Bifida Patient Registry were matched to the 2022 CDC/ATSDR Social Vulnerability Index using patient zip codes. A multinomial logistic regression was used to predict ambulation ability, and Spearman's Rho correlations were used to assess the relationship between driving distance to clinic, nearest physical therapist

INTRODUCTION: Congenital arachnoid cysts (ACs) are cerebrospinal fluid collections resulting from abnormal splitting of the arachnoid membrane during embryogenesis. They may occur as isolated lesions or in association with other central nervous system (CNS) malformations. Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) infection is a leading infectious cause of neurodevelopmental impairment and may contribute to complex CNS anomalies.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A term male infant was diagnosed prenatally at 30 weeks with midline cystic lesions, ventriculomegaly, and absent corpus callosum. Postnatal magnetic re

This paper describes the morphopathological aspects of a case of multiple cardiac malformations in a calf. A two-day-old male calf of undefined breed was born with an ectopic heart, presenting with dyspnoea and in lateral recumbency. The owner had repositioned the exposed heart beneath the adjacent skin, which was suclosed, without additional incisions or suturing of the heart or pericardial sac. The animal died the following day and was submitted for necropsy. Macroscopically, the heart was observed to be ventrally pendulous, covered by the pericardial sac, external to the thoracic cavity, wi

BACKGROUND: Tethered cord syndrome (TCS) is most commonly associated with congenital spinal dysraphism, thickened filum terminale, lipomas, or split cord malformations (SCM ). Bony causes of tethering are typically described in association with diastematomyelia. Isolated intradural bony spurs without cord splitting or extradural communication are exceptionally rare.

BACKGROUND: Supraglottic airways (SGAs) are critical rescue devices in emergency airway management and provide effective oxygenation in most failed intubations. Current airway algorithms recommend availability of a supraglottic airway but do not distinguish between device classes. Laryngeal mask-style SGAs create a perilaryngeal seal over the glottic inlet, whereas laryngeal tube-style devices create a hypopharyngeal seal with dual cuffs. Because these devices seal in different anatomic locations, they may fail for different reasons.
CASE REPORTS: We report two emergency department cases in w

Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) refers to a group of conditions caused by extrinsic compression of neurovascular structures at the thoracic outlet. Arterial TOS (aTOS) is the rarest form and may present with upper limb ischemic symptoms such as pain, coldness, pallor, and numbness, most often due to bony abnormalities such as a cervical rib. We report the case of a 19-year-old woman on combined oral contraceptive therapy who presented with acute ischemia of the right upper limb. Duplex ultrasound and computed tomography angiography revealed thrombosis of the right subclavian artery in the sett
