Preoperative Considerations for Uterine Fibroid Removal in Patients With Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser Syndrome and Klippel-Feil Syndrome: A Case Report.

Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome (MRKHS) is a congenital disorder characterized by dysplasia of the uterus and upper vagina due to Müllerian duct dysplasia. Fibroids arise from the rudimentary uterus. The implementation of surgical intervention for uterine fibroids in patients with MRKHS presents several challenges and considerations. The rudimentary uterus is tiny, making it difficult to determine the location of the pelvic mass and diagnose uterine fibroids. Preoperative planning is often inadequate, necessitating intraoperative decision-making. In addition, patients with MRKHS may pr

Exoscope-Assisted Palatoplasty in Klippel-Feil Syndrome: A Case Report.

Cleft palate (CP) is a congenital malformation that may be associated with cervical vertebral anomalies (CVA), potentially complicating surgical management due to limited neck mobility and consequent reduction in oral cavity exposure and surgical accessibility. We report an exoscope-assisted palatoplasty in a patient with Klippel-Feil syndrome. The patient presented with C4-C6 vertebral fusion and cervical hyperostosis which precluded cervical hyperextension. The use of a three-dimensional (3D) exoscope enabled optimal visualization of the surgical field despite maintenance of a neutral head p

Pediatric Horner's syndrome following posterior spinal fusion: a case series.

PURPOSE: This case series aims to highlight Horner's syndrome, a clinical diagnosis of unilateral ptosis, miosis, and anhidrosis, as a rare complication of posterior spinal surgery in pediatric patients. METHODS: In this series, we present three pediatric patients who developed Horner's syndrome after surgical correction of scoliosis involving the cervicothoracic region. RESULTS: Case 1 is a 12-year-old female with DiGeorge syndrome who underwent revision surgery with extension into the cervical spine after developing proximal junctional kyphosis 2 years after her index spinal fusion procedu

Klippel-Feil syndrome presenting as posterior circulation stroke in a paediatric patient.

Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS) is a rare congenital disorder characterised by the fusion of the cervical vertebrae. We report the case of an early adolescent patient who presented with acute dizziness, vomiting, slurred speech and left-sided hemiparesis following neck movements. Imaging revealed craniocervical anomalies (including atlanto-occipital assimilation and C2-C3 fusion) and severe vertebrobasilar artery stenosis/occlusion, which led to acute ischaemic infarcts in the cerebellum and pons. Notably, the patient lacked the classical short-neck phenotype. The patient was diagnosed with KFS an

Bilateral Sprengel deformity with asymmetrical omovertebral connections in a child with Klippel-Feil syndrome: a rare case report.

An 8-year-old male patient with bilateral Sprengel deformity, characterized by a right-sided bony omovertebral bar and a left-sided fibrous band, in the context of Klippel-Feil syndrome is presented in this case report. The patient had limited shoulder movement, a short neck, and considerable cosmetic issues. The radiological evaluation showed the omovertebral structures to be asymmetrical and a cervical fusion at C2-C3. The patient underwent 2 separate surgical procedures: the right side was operated on when the patient was 8 years old, and the left side was operated on 8 months later. The pr

Expanding the clinical and genetic spectrum of biallelic MYO18B pathogenic variants in congenital myopathy.

MYO18B is an unconventional class XVII myosin that is predominantly expressed in muscle and heart tissue. Recessive pathogenic MYO18B variants cause a rare myopathy associated with Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS), facial dysmorphism, short stature and less frequently cardiomyopathy. Reported neuromuscular manifestations were variable, with nemaline bodies observed in one patient. We report six novel patients from four families with an early onset myopathy due to biallelic MYO18B variants. Facial, axial, proximal upper and lower limb weakness was prevalent. Three patients had congenital findings in

A unique case report of Wildervanck syndrome in association with facial nerve paresis and arachnodactyly.

Wildervanck syndrome, also called as cervico-oculo-acoustic syndrome. This is characterized by the triad of Klippel-Feil syndrome, Duane retraction syndrome, and congenital deafness. Other associations described are cardiovascular and musculoskeletal abnormalities. Some reports, in fact, state that nearly one percent of hearing-impaired females may be affected by Wildervanck syndrome. In our case report, a child who had the complete triad of the syndrome along with arachnodactyly (long slender digits), camptodactyly, short stature, and facial nerve paresis has been described.

Branchial cleft cyst of the cervicothoracic spine.

A branchial cleft cyst (BCC) is a neck mass, present from birth, caused by incomplete development of the branchial arches during fetal development. It commonly presents as a solitary, painless mass in the neck of a child or young adult. We present a case of a large intramedullary BCC in a patient with Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS). A male in his 60s presented with long-lasting neck pain and fast-progressing paraparesis. MRI showed a large intramedullary cystic tumour in the cervicothoracic spine with accompanying cervical diastematomyelia and extensive cervical vertebrae fusion. The patient was

Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Restore Standards in Medical and Dental Education in Pakistan.

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Comparing intubation techniques of Klippel-Feil syndrome patients in the last 10 years: a systematic review.

CONTEXT: Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS) is a rare congenital abnormality characterized by cervical vertebral fusion. Patients typically present with a triad of short neck, low posterior hairline, and limited cervical range of motion. The location and quantity of vertebral fusions in KFS makes airway management challenging in the field of anesthesia. Anesthesiologists select intubation methods based on perceived difficulty, making this paper essential to the field. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to analyze first-attempt intubation success rates of KFS patients by intubation technique an

Klippel-Feil syndrome revealed by post-traumatic neck pain: Case report and literature review.

Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS) is a congenital anomaly involving the fusion of two or more cervical vertebrae. It is characterized by a low hairline at the nape of the neck, a short neck, and a limited range of motion. Here, we present the case of a 10-year-old girl who suffered brain trauma in a motor vehicle accident and subsequently experienced persistent occipital headaches and dizziness. A brain computed tomography scan performed to evaluate these symptoms revealed incomplete fusion of two cervical vertebrae (C2-C3), leading to a diagnosis of KFS. Magnetic resonance imaging of the spine was

Neurological and neuropsychological correlates of Klippel-Feil syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Klippel-Feil syndrome is a rare congenital malformation caused by fusions of cervical vertebrae. In 50% of these patients, a triad of short neck, limited neck motion, and low posterior hairline characterizes the clinical presentation. In KFS, neurological deficits are common due to cervical canal stenosis and other deformities involving basicranial structures. Other congenital anomalies are also associated with the syndrome. CASE PRESENTATION: Our case describes a particular case of KFS, showing a disconnection between a severe involvement of the cervical-occipital structures indi
