Pediatric Lumbosacral Spondylolisthesis: Overcoming the Disability!

BACKGROUND: Congenital spondylolisthesis is characterized by dysplasia of the facet joint or congenital defect in the pars. OBJECTIVE: Our study highlights the clinical and radiological profile, various treatment options, and outcomes in patients with pediatric congenital lumbar and lumbosacral spondylolisthesis. METHODS: A retrospective analysis and follow-up of 22 patients were conducted presented with radiological diagnosis of congenital lumbar/lumbosacral spondylolisthesis (2018-2021). RESULTS: Twenty patients (91%) had L5-S1 listhesis and two patients (9%) had L4-L5 listhesis. Six (27.

High-Frequency Cervical and High Thoracic Spinal Cord Stimulation to Treat Refractory Failed Back Surgery Syndrome in a Patient with Chronic Neck and Low Back Pain: Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS) is defined as lumbar spinal pain of unknown origin that persists following surgical intervention or newly presents after spine surgery (1). This pain may originate from surgery, or the surgery may worsen or insufficiently reduce prior pain (1). From 2004 to 2015, the volume of lumbar fusion surgery increased by 62.3% (2). With the frequency of lumbar fusion surgery comes an increased propensity to develop FBSS. The risk of developing FBSS in patients who have undergone lumbar spine surgery is as high as 50% (3). Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is a

Active bone material containing modified recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 induces bone regeneration in rabbit spina bifida.

This study focuses on spina bifida, which is a high incidence among the current clinical manifestations of human birth defects. Because in the treatment of bone defects, the source of autologous bone is limited and it is easy to cause secondary injury to the patient. At the same time, since the bone tissue in animals needs to perform a variety of biological functions, its complex structure cannot be replaced by a single material. Therefore, in this study, we used Japanese white rabbits to establish an animal model similar to human congenital spina bifida. The established animal model is used t

Reverse Bohlman technique for treatment of high-grade spondylolisthesis in an adult population.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Surgical techniques for treatment of high-grade spondylolisthesis (HGS) remain controversial. This study aims to evaluate both radiographic and clinical outcomes in patients with HGS treated with the "modified Bohlman" and Reverse Bohlman technique. METHODS: Review of consecutive HGS patients undergoing modified Bohlman and Reverse Bohlman at a single center from 2006 to 2018. Clinical, surgical, and radiographic data were collected. RESULTS: Six patients identified in the modified Bohlman treatment arm: and eight patients in the Reverse Bohlman group. Twelve (12) patients p

Spondylodiscitis in a 54-year-old female scuba diver.

A 54-year-old woman presented to a Sports Physician with a 4-year history of haemochromatosis, and she had a medical history that included a congenital spondylolisthesis resulting in a fusion of L4-S1 at age 16 years, episodic mechanical low back pain and an absence of other significant musculoskeletal symptoms. On presentation, she reported 18 months of severe low back pain that started after a scuba diving trip. After the onset of this low back pain, she developed gastrointestinal symptoms from Salmonella The gastrointestinal symptoms improved with a course of antibiotics, but the back pain

Congenital Spondylolytic Spondylolisthesis of C2 Vertebra Associated With Atlanto-Axial Dislocation, Chiari Type I Malformation, and Anomalous Vertebral Artery: Case Report With Review Literature.

BACKGROUND: Congenital spondylolytic spondylolisthesis of C2 vertebra resulting from deficient posterior element of the axis is rarely described in the literature. CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe a unique case of agenesis of posterior elements of C2 with craniovertebral junction anomalies consisting of osseous, vascular, and soft tissue anomalies. A 26-year-old man presented with symptoms of upper cervical myelopathy of 12 months' duration. A computed tomography scan of the cervical spine including the craniovertebral junction revealed spondylolisthesis of C2 over C3, atlantoaxial dislocation,

Posterior lumbar interbody fusion for the management of spondylolisthesis.

The ideal surgical treatment of spondylolisthesis still remains controversial. There are several methods of treatment and posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) is one of them. We analyze the results of spondylolisthesis treated by PLIF in term of radiological union, improvement of pre-operative symptoms like back pain, radiating pain and return to normal activities including that of employment, by the review of the medical records. Total of 72 patients, 20 male and 52 female and the age ranges from 15 to 68 years with the mean age being 44.38 years were included in the study. Thirty (41.66%

[Tibialis posterior tendon transfer for drop foot deformity].

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated tibialis posterior tendon (TPT) transfers in patients with drop foot deformity. METHODS: Eight patients with drop foot deformity (2 females, 6 males; mean age 40 years; range 15 to 75 years) underwent TPT transfer to the dorsum of the foot. The deformity was on the left in three patients and on the right in five patients. Etiology was traumatic peroneal nerve injuries in six patients, and upper-level nerve injuries after hip and lumbar surgery in two patients. For clinical evaluation, the patients were questioned about the results of treatment, and the Stanmore evalua

Treatment of congenital spondyloptosis in an 18-month-old patient with a 10-year follow-up.

STUDY DESIGN: Case report. OBJECTIVES: To present the case of a patient with congenital spondyloptosis treated and followed over 10 years. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The surgical management of spondyloptosis in children is variably reported in the literature. Some authors propose that posterior fusion in situ is a safe and reliable procedure, whereas others suggest that reduction of the slipped vertebra may prevent some of the adverse sequelae of in situ fusion, which include nonunion, bending of the fusion mass, and persistent lumbosacral deformity. Many investigators advocate a combined a

Quality of data regarding diagnoses of spinal disorders in administrative databases. A multicenter study.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the accuracy of data regarding diagnoses of spinal disorders in administrative databases at eight different institutions. The records of 189 patients who had been managed for a disorder of the lumbar spine were independently reviewed by a physician who assigned the appropriate diagnostic codes according to the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM). The age range of the 189 patients was seventeen to eighty-four years. The six major diagnostic categories studied were herniation of a lumbar disc,

Congenital spondylolisthesis of the 6th cervical vertebra: CT findings.

The CT demonstration of a case of congenital spondylolisthesis of the C6 vertebral body is reported. This entity includes bilateral bony defects in the pars interarticularis regions, deranged facet joints, as well as a midline bony cleft in the spinous process. This congenital deformity should be recognized and not mistaken for traumatic spondylolisthesis.

Computed tomography of congenital spondylolisthesis of the sixth cervical vertebra.

Congenital anomalies of the cervical spine occur relatively commonly. An interesting anomaly is congenital spondylolisthesis of the sixth cervical vertebra. We are presenting a case of this anomaly as imaged with plain radiography and computed tomography. We have also reviewed the previous literature and attempted to clarify distinctions between bilateral cervical spondylolysis with spondylolisthesis and other cervical spine lesions.

Complete spondylolisthesis in an infant. Treatment with decompression and fusion.

A grade 4 spondylolisthesis at the level of L-4 and L-5 was detected in a 3-year-old girl who had a spastic gait and focal sensory deficit. There was no history or objective evidence of substantial spinal trauma. A deformity over the lower part of the spine had been noted at 1 year of age and the radiological lesion was more extensive than that found in classical spondylolysis. Consquently, a diagnosis of congenital spondylolisthesis is most acceptable. Treatment via combined posterior and posterolateral fusion following anterior decompression has yielded gratifying results.
