Arterial thoracic outlet syndrome (ATOS) is a rare condition, affecting 1% to 5% of TOS cases, characterized by the compression of the subclavian artery, often due to anatomical anomalies like cervical ribs. Cervical ribs that are not a very common anatomical anomaly can give rise to arterial supply compromise needing surgical intervention to undo the compression is the highlight of this case report. A 17-year-old male presented with progressive numbness, pain, and a gangrenous ulcer on his right index finger, aggravated by exertion. Clinical examination revealed absent pulses in the right han

Elongation of the anterior tubercle of the cervical transverse process with formation of an accessory articulation between adjacent vertebrae is a rare anatomical variant. Recognition of this variant is important to avoid misidentification as an acute fracture fragment in the trauma setting. In this report, a 22-year-old female patient presented to the emergency department following a motor vehicle collision (MVC). Per patient self-report, there was no known prior cervical spine pathology or previously identified congenital anomalies. Non-contrast computed tomography (CT) of the cervical spine

UNLABELLED: Staphylococcal infections have been reported to be a significant global threat to the effective management of public healthcare due to their drug resistance property. This attribute has further been complicated by their robust biofilm-forming potential. This escalating threat of biofilm-associated infections necessitates innovative and promising therapeutic strategies. Hence, in the present study, the biofilm threat of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has been challenged by Nisin, a natural lantibiotic produced by Lactococcus lactis. This compound showed a promisi

A 4-year-old Nigerian Dwarf wether presented for chronic regurgitation and cervical swelling of three years duration. Physical examination revealed a large ventral cervical mass. The goat made repeated attempts to swallow and regurgitate, but the mass did not change significantly in size. Cervical radiographs revealed segmental esophageal dilation to the level of the thoracic inlet. CT revealed a transitional seventh cervical vertebra with fused right and left ribs, resulting in extramural esophageal compression and obstruction at the level of the thoracic inlet. This is the first report of a

Many studies have described the frequency of short-term complications in patients undergoing first rib resection for thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS). The rate of long-term complications is less well known. 699 patients that had undergone first rib resection for TOS during 2004-2018 were identified from the Care Register for Healthcare in Finland. The prevalence of complications within 30 days and 1 year was analyzed. The prevalence of complications within 30 days was 9.8%, and complications occurred in 18.8% of the cases within 1 year. The rate of vascular and neural complications increased fro

Clavicle fractures are common in children, comprising up to 15% of fractures presenting to the emergency department. Typically, mid-shaft clavicle fracture in the paediatric population is managed conservatively, with surgery recommended in a select few. A 12-year-old boy presented with a depressed mid-shaft clavicle fracture with an ipsilateral cervical rib exhibiting features of venous congestion. This case was managed conservatively using a sling and the patient was admitted for overnight observation with early mobilisation encouraged. His recovery was complicated by a re-fracture 4 weeks la

The paucity of well-preserved and dated Pleistocene human remains impedes investigation of demographics and interactions in Late Pleistocene populations in Southeast Asia. Here, we report TBH1, an exceptionally well-preserved approximately 35-year-old male skeleton dated 12 500-12 000 years before present that provides rare insights into these debates. Superior preservation permitted detailed testing of different models of biological affinity and recovery of the earliest mitochondrial DNA evidence from Vietnam. Morphometric analyses indicated an affiliation with extant Southeast Asian Island p

INTRODUCTION: The presence of an abnormal vertebral pattern and (rudimentary) cervical ribs in particular has been associated with adverse fetal and neonatal outcomes, such as intrauterine fetal death and structural or chromosomal abnormalities. The feasibility and potential added value of prenatal assessment of the vertebral pattern and the presence of cervical ribs are currently unclear. Aims of this study were to evaluate the feasibility of prenatal assessment of the fetal vertebral pattern and cervical ribs using three-dimensional ultrasound and determine whether an abnormal vertebral patt

The thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) refers to a group of clinical conditions caused by compression of nerves and blood vessels in congenital or acquired anatomical narrowing of the upper thoracic aperture. This includes the anatomical structures, such as the scalene muscles, the first rib, a possibly present cervical rib, the costoclavicular joint or the pectoralis minor muscle. Isolated venous compression is also known as thoracic inlet syndrome (TIS). The symptoms are diverse and the path to a correct diagnosis is often prolonged. In the absence of anatomical anomalies, conservative treatment

True neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome (nTOS) is a rare condition resulting from brachial plexus compression, frequently associated with congenital anomalies such as cervical ribs or fibrous bands. We report a unique case of nTOS involving both a cervical rib and fibrous band, complicated by an incidental intraoperative finding of a fascicular rupture in the lower part of lower trunk. Notably, the patient had no history of trauma but had undergone multiple sessions of manual therapy and a single extracorporeal shockwave therapy to the cervical region, raising concerns about a potential iatro

CASE: We experienced a rare case of thoracic outlet syndrome caused by bilateral cervical ribs (CR) arising from the 8th cervical vertebra and resected using a supraclavicular approach. Eight months after the left surgery, the remnant of the CR, which could not be removed, was enlarged and compressed the neurovascular bundle again. Reoperation was performed using a transaxillary endoscopic approach. The patient had no symptoms or recurrence 5 years after the final surgery.
CONCLUSION: The 8th cervical vertebra is rarely encountered. The transaxillary endoscopic approach was helpful for resect

Morphological variants in the cervical and thoracic regions, although often asymptomatic, can have significant clinical implications when they contribute to conditions such as thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS). We report a rare case of a 39-year-old female patient presenting with vascular TOS. Detailed imaging via high-resolution computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) revealed a right-sided elongated transverse process (ETP) of the C7 (24.70 mm in length) articulating with a cervical rib (CR), which showed synostosis with the first rib. The coexistence of CR synostosis

Thoracic outlet syndrome is caused by the compression of neurovascular structures in the thoracic outlet. We present an alternative approach to open treatment that uses single port laparoscopy. This minimally invasive technique allows for improved exposure and precise dissection and is more efficacious in morbidly obese patients. Additionally, this technique offers a smaller incision with the single port system and improved ergonomics with the laparoscopic instruments. In the standard open approach, it can be difficult to obtain full posterior/medial exposure safely, and there is risk of exces

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) is a compression problem that occurs in the cervico-thoracic space, where nerve or vascular structures can be compressed on their way to the armpit, leading to organ damage. This present a case of white woman with a prominent, symptomatic first rib and a chronic brachial plexus lesion with acute arterial occlusion after surgical removal of a supernumerary rib. An angioplasty with an expandable balloon stent was performed in order to restore arterial flow. To date, we have not identified case reports of acute arterial occlusion immediately after open resection of

Arterial thoracic outlet syndrome is a rare condition characterized by subclavian artery compression, leading to occlusion, poststenotic dilation, aneurysm formation, and distal embolization. We present the case of a 21-year-old collegiate volleyball player with arterial thoracic outlet syndrome and chronic limb-threatening ischemia owing to bilateral cervical ribs. Initially misdiagnosed as Raynaud's phenomenon, she experienced progressive ischemic symptoms. A staged surgical approach included thoracic outlet decompression followed by axillary-to-radial artery bypass without the need for axil

The article presents a clinical observation of successful treatment of a patient with post-thrombotic occlusion of the subclavian artery and critical ischemia of the left upper limb. According to computed tomography angiography, extravasal compression of segment 2 of the subclavian artery by an additional cervical rib was detected. Decompression of the subclavian artery with resection of the additional cervical rib, thrombectomy, and angiography were urgently performed via the left supraclavicular approach. Blood flow to the limb was restored, and no additional endovascular procedures were req

BACKGROUND: Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) is a debilitating neurologic condition that is commonly encountered in routine neurosurgical practice. It causes severe pain, paresthesias, and weakness in the affected limb and can negatively impact patients' quality of life. Classically, TOS is caused by compression of the neurovascular bundle in the thoracic outlet region, often by soft tissue or bony anomalies. A relationship to cervicothoracic scoliosis has not been previously reported. The purpose of this case series is to report on the clinical and radiographic findings, surgical interventions,

Unlike widespread and well-studied atherosclerosis of supra-aortic arteries, non-atherosclerotic vascular diseases are less common. Of these, one of the most unusual is extravasal compression by additional structures between scalene muscles. Close topographic and anatomical connections of scalene muscles, vertebral and subclavian arteries, brachial plexus and stellate ganglion can lead to complex syndrome including impaired blood supply to the arm, brachial plexus compression and vertebrobasilar circulatory disorders. The main treatment method for supraclavicular compression syndromes is surge

Thoracic outlet syndrome results from neurovascular compression at the thoracic outlet, with the vascular subtype, often linked to cervical ribs leading to subclavian artery stenosis, aneurysm, or thromboembolism. Adson's test is a long-standing provocative maneuver used for diagnosis, but its accuracy has been questioned. This systematic review, conducted according to PRISMA 2020 guidelines, searched PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library up to August 2025. Studies were included if they involved more than 20 human participants, assessed Adson's test against imaging or surgical confi
