Intercostal nerve radiofrequency ablation for slipping rib syndrome: a case report.

Slipping rib syndrome (SRS) is an underdiagnosed condition causing chronic debilitating thoracic wall pain due to hypermobility of costal cartilage and irritation of intercostal nerves. Conservative management includes analgesics and intercostal nerve blocks. When these measures fail, surgical rib fixation is considered. This case is the first reported successful use of intercostal nerve radiofrequency ablation (RFA) as a preoperative bridge in the management of SRS. We report a case of a 25-year-old woman with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and slipping rib syndrome who developed recurren

Lumbo-Costovertebral Syndrome with Congenital Inferior Lumbar Hernia in a Female Infant.

Herein, we report a rare case of a 1 year old female who was diagnosed with congenital lumbar hernia along with vertebral, ribs, and abdominal wall anomalies suggestive of lumbo-costovertebral syndrome. It was also associated with musculoskeletal, genital, ocular, and cardiovascular defects. The patient presented with a palpable swelling in the lumbar region, which was initially suspected to be a simple hernia. Other apparent ocular and musculoskeletal findings revealed complex systemic anomalies that necessitated further investigation. Imaging studies, including ultrasonography and computed t

It's not about the dent: Anteroposterior insufficiency in pectus excavatum.

BACKGROUND: Pectus Excavatum (PEx) is an anterior chest wall deformity associated with sternal depression. Minimal invasive repair of PEx (MIRPE) and open pectus repair depend on anterior ribs to elevate the sternal defect. Many PEx patients, however, have inadequate anteroposterior (AP) distance to support a complete repair. The quantity and frequency of AP insufficiency (API) in a PEx surgical population is reported. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 100 pectus excavatum (PEx) patients with a CT or MRI Haller Index >3.2 was performed. Demographics, Haller Index (HI), Correction Index (CI

Bilateral cervical ribs forming pseudoarthrosis with the first ribs co-occurring with an aberrant right subclavian artery.

While anatomical variations in both aortic arch branching and rib cage development are considered relatively common, compared to various other anomalies, their coexistence seems to be underreported. We present a case report of a 70-year-old Polish woman with bilateral complete cervical ribs forming a pseudoarthrosis with the superior surface of the first ribs, and an aberrant right subclavian artery (arteria lusoria) with a retroesophageal course. We believe that the frequency of their co-occurrence may be higher than would be expected based on statistical probability derived from their preval

Congenital Superior Lumbar Hernia (Grynfeltt-Lesshaft Hernia) Associated With Orofacial, Limb, and Rib Anomalies: A Neonatal Case Report.

Congenital superior lumbar hernia (Grynfeltt-Lesshaft hernia) is an extremely rare defect of the posterior abdominal wall in neonates and is frequently associated with other congenital anomalies. We report a one-month-old female presenting with a right-sided lumbar swelling since birth. Clinical examination revealed a large, reducible mass measuring 8 × 10 cm in the superior lumbar triangle. Associated anomalies included a complete right-sided cleft lip, right thumb hypoplasia with radial deviation, and absence of the lower right thoracic ribs. Abdominal ultrasound demonstrated bowel loops wit

Alpha-terpineol induced developmental toxicity in Wistar rats: Embryotoxic, teratogenic, and targeted gene expression effects.

Alpha-terpineol (α-terpineol), a ubiquitous monoterpenoid alcohol found in numerous essential oils, is widely employed in cosmetics, perfumes, and aromatic therapies. Despite its extensive application, concerns regarding its potential reproductive and developmental toxicity remain inadequately characterized, particularly concerning specific teratogenic effects and underlying molecular mechanisms. This study presents novel findings, demonstrating that α-terpineol exposure during the critical organogenesis period significantly induces developmental toxicity in Wistar rat fetuses. α-terpineol was

Amendment-driven changes in nutrient availability and forage uptake in a recently converted boreal soil.

Increasing evidence suggests that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) influence the pathogenesis and progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The authors of the present study previously reported that abnormal upregulation of lncRNA DQ786243 (lncDQ) was associated with poor prognoses for patients with HCC. However, the elucidation of underlying mechanisms which influenced these results was not completed. Thus, the current study aimed to characterize the mechanisms and functions of lncDQ that facilitate its promotion of HCC progression. lncDQ, miR‑15b‑5p and Wnt3A expression levels were characte

Augmented Reality and 3D Printing as an Aid to Surgical Planning in Modern Microtia Reconstruction.

Since Tanzer's seminal work introducing costal cartilage for ear reconstruction, subsequent advances by Brent, Nagata, and Firmin have refined surgical techniques and aesthetic outcomes. However, fundamental aspects of the procedure-such as planning incisions, achieving accurate ear positioning, and guiding chest wall incisions for rib harvest-have seen limited innovation. The current standard practice of using projection paper or transparent templates to replicate the contralateral ear position remains imprecise. Similarly, autologous cartilage harvest can be particularly challenging in patie

Cardiac dysfunction after operative correction of a thoracic hyperkyphosis in a patient with a severe pectus excavatum.

INTRODUCTION: Thoracic hyperkyphosis can occur idiopathically, in the context of Scheuermann's disease, or in association with neuromuscular or metabolic disorders. Treatment depends on the patient's age, severity of the deformity, and underlying conditions. Conservative measures such as physiotherapy and reclination bracing are used in mild cases, whereas surgical correction is indicated for kyphosis exceeding 60-70°. A known association exists between hyperkyphosis and pectus excavatum, the latter of which can cause cardiac symptoms. However, the impact of surgical kyphosis correction on car

Unusually high prevalence of cervical ribs in an 18th-Century Hungarian town: The impact of a tuberculosis epidemic.

Tuberculosis (TB) ravaged the Hungarian town of Vác in the 18th century. Nearly all of the young and middle-aged adults buried in the Dominican Church were infected with TB. Therefore, most women were likely infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) during pregnancy. In rodents, disruptions in early gestation, when the head-to-tail patterning of the embryo occurs, often result in an increased incidence of cervical ribs. Because TB severely disrupts pregnancy, we hypothesized that these disruptions would result in an increased number of cervical ribs in Vác residents. We examined 58 skelet

Does a high Haller index influence outcomes in pectus excavatum repair?

OBJECTIVE: Severity for pectus excavatum includes Haller index (HI) > 3.25. An extremely high HI (≥8) may influence surgical approach and complications. This study reviews outcomes of patients with high HI after repair. METHODS: A single institution retrospective analysis was performed on adult patients with HI ≥ 8 undergoing pectus excavatum repairs. For outcomes, a propensity score-matched control group with a HI ≤ 4 was utilized. RESULTS: In total, 64 cases (mean age, 33.5 ± 10.9 years; HI, 13.1 ± 5.0; 56% women) were included. A minimally invasive repair was successful in 84%. A hybrid p

Increased incidences of cervical ribs in deer indicate extinction risk.

Mammals as a rule have seven cervical vertebrae, a number which remains remarkably conserved. Occasional deviations of this number are usually due to the presence of cervical ribs on the seventh vertebra, indicating a homeotic transformation from a cervical rib-less vertebra into a thoracic rib-bearing vertebra. These transformations are often associated with major congenital abnormalities or pediatric cancers (pleiotropic effects) that are, at least in humans, strongly selected against. Based on data from Late Pleistocene mammoths (Mammuthus primigenius) and woolly rhinoceroses (Coelodonta an

Bifid rib in bioarchaeological material on the example of new cases from Poland with literature review and proposal of classification.

The anomaly known as a bifid rib is difficult to quantify in bioarchaeological collections not only because of its rarity in the population itself (less than 1.5%), but also because of vulnerability to postmortem damage of this part of the skeleton as well as similarity to other developmental anomalies, which can lead to its misidentification. This work presents five cases of rib bifurcation (from four individuals) from four different populations living in Kujawy region in north-central Poland from the Neolithic until the Early Modern Era. Morphological analyses are matched by a paleoradiologi

The pectus care guidelines: best practice consensus guidelines from the joint specialist societies SCTS/MF/CWIG/BOA/BAPS for the treatment of patients with pectus abnormalities.

Pectus defects are a group of congenital conditions found in approximately 1 in 250 people, where the sternum is depressed back towards the spine (excavatum), protrudes forwards (carinatum) or more rarely is a mixture of both (arcuatum or mixed defects). For the majority of patients, it is well tolerated, but some patients are affected psychologically, physiologically or both. The deformity becomes apparent at a young age due to the growth of the ribs and the cartilage that links them to the sternum. The majority of defects are mild and are well tolerated, i.e. they do not affect activity and

Prevalence and characteristics of lumbar ribs: a meta-analysis with anatomical and clinical considerations.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar ribs (LR) are a rare and relatively unknown anatomical abnormality of the lumbar spine. The literature provides better understanding regarding other spinal congenital variations like cervical ribs or lumbosacral transitional vertebrae, which are rather commonly recognised conditions. Thus, this meta-analysis aimed to provide data on prevalence and key characteristics of LR. METHODS: Relevant databases were systematically searched for studies reporting the prevalence, laterality and geographic distribution of LR. No exclusion criteria based on language and date of original a
