Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Restore Standards in Medical and Dental Education in Pakistan.

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Case Report of a Novel EVC Gene Mutation in Ellis-van Creveld Syndrome: Implications for Pediatric Dental Management.

INTRODUCTION: Ellis-van Creveld (EVC) syndrome, also known as chondroectodermal dysplasia, is a rare autosomal recessive disorder that affects multiple embryonic tissues. It is primarily caused by mutations in the EVC gene. PATIENT INFORMATION: We report an 11-year-old male diagnosed with EVC syndrome, who carries a novel homozygous pathogenic mutation, c.1750delC (p.Q584Rfs∗4), in the EVC gene, identified through whole-exome sequencing (WES) and confirmed by Sanger sequencing. Clinical features included multiple aberrant frenula, disproportionate short stature, polydactyly, and dystrophic na

Mexican patient with Ellis-van Creveld syndrome and cleft palate: Importance of functional hemizygosity and phenotype expansion.

BACKGROUND: Ellis-van Creveld syndrome (EvCS) is a chondroectodermal dysplasia caused by germline pathogenic variants in ciliary complex subunit 1 and 2 genes (EVC, EVC2) on chromosome 4p16.2. This disease has a broad phenotype, and there are few described phenotype-genotype correlations. METHODS: Ethical Compliance: Written informed consent was obtained from the parents. Here, we report a genetically confirmed Mexican patient with EvCS having two inherited pathogenic variants in trans in EVC2: c.[1195C>T];[2161delC]. RESULTS: This patient allowed a genotypic-phenotypic comparison with anoth

A Case Report on Ellis-van Creveld Syndrome: Clinical, Embryological, Anesthetic, and Surgical Implications.

Postaxial polydactyly (PAP) in the form of rudimentary soft tissue masses is quite common. Management involves ligation or surgical excision. Rarely do literature discussions cover complex variants in which the extra finger is fully developed. Ellis-van Creveld syndrome (EVC) or chondroectodermal dysplasia is a rare disorder characterized by PAP. When chondral dysplasia encompasses PAP, dwarfism, and genu valgum, ectodermal dysplasia involves nails and teeth. We describe two EVC cases. When one had cardiac malformations, the other had dental anomalies. One of them underwent genu valgum correct

Ellis-van Creveld syndrome: a case report.

Ellis-van Creveld syndrome (EVC), also known as chondroectodermal dysplasia, is a rare entity. It most commonly affects the tubular bones leading to dwarfism and a long trunk with ossification defects. Other presentations are wide hands and feet, dysplastic nails, thin hair, and cardiac malformations. An eight-year-old female patient presented to our tertiary care centre with complaints of short stature, abnormal dentition, and fatigue. The child's parents were first-degree relatives. On radiological imaging, it was revealed that the patient had postaxial polydactyly, short stature, and genu v

Surgical Outcome of Complex Knee Deformity Correction in a Girl With Ellis-van Creveld Syndrome: A Report of a Rare Case.

Ellis-van Creveld (EVC) syndrome is a rare inherited condition with inheritance, which is autosomal recessive in nature and is also described as skeletal dysplasia (chondroectodermal). The patients present with a grave genu valgum deformity which is a major challenge in orthopedics. The current case report presents a young girl of the juvenile age group who came with deformity over the bilateral lower limb with difficulty in walking and bilateral upper limb polydactyly. The patient underwent relevant investigations and examinations which were suggestive of bilateral genu valgum deformity. Sinc

Ellis-van Creveld syndrome in a neonate: a case report.

Ellis-Van Creveld Syndrome (EVC) is a rare genetic disorder with autosomal recessive inheritance, caused by mutations in two genes, EVC1 and EVC2 in the 4p16 chromosome. The exact prevalence of EVC is unknown and is estimated at approximately seven per million. It affects males and females equally. It is a constellation of four findings, including chondrodysplasia, polydactyly, ectodermal dysplasia, and congenital heart defects. Our case was unique as it had left inguinal hernia, short phallus, hyperpigmented scrotum, cryptorchidism, and other defining features of this syndrome. A multidiscipl

Late survival in Ellis-van Creveld syndrome with common single atrium.

Ellis-van Creveld (EVC) syndrome is a relatively rare chondroectodermal dysplasia considered mainly as a generalised disorder of the maturation of endochondral ossification. Congenital heart disease occurs in approximately half of the patients with EVC syndrome, 60% of which is a common atrium. Common atrium is a rare variety of interatrial communication characterised by absence or virtual absence of the atrial septum. Patients with this syndrome rarely survive to an old age. We report a case of EVC who presented for the first time at 60 years of age, as survival to an advanced age is exceptio

Skeletal ciliopathies: a pattern recognition approach.

Ciliopathy encompasses a diverse group of autosomal recessive genetic disorders caused by mutations in genes coding for components of the primary cilia. Skeletal ciliopathy forms a subset of ciliopathies characterized by distinctive skeletal changes. Common skeletal ciliopathies include Jeune asphyxiating thoracic dysplasia, Ellis-van Creveld syndrome, Sensenbrenner syndrome, and short-rib polydactyly syndromes. These disorders share common clinical and radiological features. The clinical hallmarks comprise thoracic hypoplasia with respiratory failure, body disproportion with a normal trunk le

Polydactyly a review and update of a common congenital hand difference.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to describe various forms of hand polydactyly and their different treatment approaches. Hand polydactyly is commonly classified as ulnar (small finger) or radial (thumb). Polydactyly can be sporadic, genetic, and/or associated with syndromic conditions. RECENT FINDINGS: Both ulnar and radial polydactyly can be surgically treated to optimize hand aesthetics and function. Timing of surgery is based on multiple factors, most notably including safety of anesthesia and socialization of the affected child. The pediatrician should be aware of potentia

Chondroectodermal Syndrome.

Chondroectodermal syndrome or Ellis Van Creveld (EVC) is a rare autosomal recessive congenital disorder. It was first described by Richard W.B.Ellis and Simon Van Creveld in 1940. Parental consanguinity is present in about 30% of the cases. A large number of cases were reported in Amish population of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania USA and also in Aboriginal community of Australia in 1964. The incidence in Amish population is 1/5000 live births and in general population 7/1,000,000. There are only 150 cases reported worldwide. The principal feature of this syndrome is a tetrad of disproportiona
